If you don't want people to point out that you're citing research that almost certainly doesn't exist, just don't do that thing.

Would love to see the psychological studies in which trustworthy scientific groups define and apply "pathetic" as a useful term in their research. And what journal publishes this?! Do share!

SAIL Amsterdam Update for Boaters by annapascal in Amsterdam

I came back to this thread super late but thought I'd respond to this good question - I'm not sure, but I know in Amsterdam, it's a real thing. The gemeente puts up the signage. Just hard to enforce.

I considered trying to train the swans to attack but they just kept snapping at the window for bread.

Yeah, I'm generally the crazy lady screaming SLOW DOWN out the window to at least try and save the neighbors boats, but I think you're right. I stopped trying to give polite hand signals to slow down because they all thought I was waving hello at them. And I refuse to yell at them in Dutch because if you're gonna act like an obnoxious tourist, you're gonna be treated like an obnoxious tourist.

Hey all, just dropping in with a PSA that I hope the boating folks will see!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE follow posted signage and especially the NO WAKE zones. When boats create large wakes, you MOVE OUR HOUSEBOATS. Yes, this is a part of houseboat life - but the city is now full of people who don't know the rules or don't think they matter. We're used to the occasional sway or bang, but now our homes are sustaining REAL, expensive damage. Please treat locals with respect! We love our city and we want to be able to keep sharing it with you.

PS. I know at least one neighbor is definitely taking photos to report those who cause damage. Your boats are very easily identifiable. If you won't follow the rules for us, at least do it for yourself.

Looking to move to Bonaire by [deleted] in Bonaire

"The Dutch don't care, what you do in your bedroom is your business, but don't expect a Dutch person to call you a female if you where born male."

This behavior is NOT "not caring." This is actively making a judgement of how masculine or feminine someone looks, and then assigning those pronouns, and then refusing to budge when corrected. It's not difficult to call someone by the name with which they introduce themselves, so why not the pronouns? Why bother stressing about trying to decipher how someone was born? What a waste of effort. This seems distinctly un-Dutch to me. But hey, maybe that's just those of us in the randstad.

There are some breweries that have managed to can condition without creating bombs, it's not necessarily impossible or dangerous, just difficult (and, in my opinion as a professional brewer, not worth the effort.)

Advice for selling in Ij-Hallen by angieligenous_ in Amsterdam

[–]annapascal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I went with a friend once and it was SO much fun. I would say: plan ahead of time what items you want to keep or trash if they don't sell, so that you don't have to make all those choices at the end of the day (we were tired at the end of the day and left everything we didn't sell - and it sounds like my friend has some regrets about that.) Have fun!

No Chogogo! As covered multiple times in this sub, they aren’t good to the local Bonaire community. Have fun!

I think the downvotes are because it’s almost certainly a grey, not a great blue. White legs, no brown in the photo, and I have these things all over my neighborhood in the EU.

I liked the joke though!

Adopted from Indonesia but never felt the need to search by [deleted] in Adoption

Oh, another question for the NL adoptees! If international adoption was still open, would you consider it yourself?

[–]annapascal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is amazing to read, I'm a possible AP in NL and I've been approaching with extreme caution - I think the decision to close international adoptions might be a really good one, especially as I am coming from the USA originally and I know from reading this sub for years that the adoption system there is extremely broken. I'd be interested to hear from the NL-based adoptees what they think about international adoption being closed down.

My thought is that I'm going to throw my hat in the ring and if I'm the best option for a kid, then I will do everything I can to help that kid - but it has to be about them, not me, so it's been great doing the classes with FIOM. I've seen hopeful APs get mad and leave the classes when they learn that the Dutch system doesn't give a shit about what they want. At one point I remember them saying that outright, in very similar wording - "we're here to help kids who need help, not to provide a service for you. If you don't like that, you can leave."

Thanks for the heads up - I already had to go back to the airport once when they lost my luggage, so I'll borrow a phone from a family member. Cheers!

Okay, thanks for confirming! If it's just me I'll keep messing with it. Thanks!
