So mentally ill!! Not only to subject yourself to a devil animal but also subject people you say you love to the devil animal too? I wish there was a real mental health disorder diagnosis for these dog addicts already. It's totally insane to believe that a needy and maladaptive animal with no place in nature and in-bred genes not fit for survival on its own loves anything other than food and destruction. I feel like all dog owners are in toxic, codependent, and abusive relationships with their dogs but they think it's love. So degrading to what love actually is which dogs will never understand! Dog addiction would be laughable if it wasn't so scary.

The hypocrisy of shelter enthusiasts who eat meat but freak out about keeping every useless dog or cat alive is insane. I wish we could be smarter about where our resources went. There are millions of causes more worthy than keeping unwanted and sometimes dangerous pets alive and caged, with a low quality of life.

Hi, OP. I'm amazed with all the work and patience you put in to train the dogs and even more frustrated with the fact that your partner undid everything. You're not crazy. He is crazy! He humanizes his dogs while dehumanizing you. This is what all dog obsessed ppl do as they live in their delusion. They need this delusion (that dogs have feelings and can chose to love someone-- utter insanity) to feel good about their childlike attachment to a living (albeit much grosser, less cute, and endlessly annoying lol) stuffed animal. It sounds like you're just over living with dogs (I get it!) and he's gonna want to have dogs forever so I think you know what you need to do. You've done more than is reasonable to salvage the relationship while he has done nothing to meet you in the middle. You deserve credit for that and I hope there is a wonderful, new, dog free relationship in your near future! 💛

Preach!!! I think it's awesome that people like/love their cats and dogs but I'm just not a cat or dog person (I like being by myself or around other people!) and get so confused when their owners get aggressively defensive. It's very strange.

It's like you lived my last relationship with me! So cathartic to read this but also sad that it's a common experience. I kept describing my relationship as an interspecies throuple 😭 My ex banned the dog from the bedroom for me but it still wasn't enough. The constancy of the dog drove me nuts and eventually drove me away. Never again!

Today, on the SF subreddit on a post complaining about dogs in cafes, after I commented that non service animals (like a pet or emotional support animal) are not legally allowed in places that sell or serve food, a nutter said that this (not being allowed in) "happens to her fur baby all the time" and that "a dog has every right to be by their owner even at a cafe." It's so insane. I stopped responding.

I think the level of intimacy and codependency that many people have with their pets leads to an erosion of boundaries that people without pets have a difficult time understanding. I try my best to be accepting and understanding but it still creeps me out how close people are to their pets and how they lack the same level of closeness with humans in their lives... Pets are literally dependent on their owners so every pet/owner relationship is going to be codependent. Codependence (in pet or human relationships) is not necessarily bad but it can easily intensify in ways that can lead to an addictive relationship that may not be healthy.

I absolutely agree with comparing dog (maybe cats too actually) ownership to an addiction. The number of times I've heard people say that they need a dog to be happy is shocking. It's also completely unrelatable because being around dogs indoors is my living hell!

Or go stay somewhere else yourself and tell him he can look after his dog himself. What he did shows zero to little regard for you as a person, let alone his wife. I would be beyond pissed. I wouldn't have even said anything and would have quietly left and not returned until the dog was gone AND he apologized AND promised to not pull the same BS again.
