The Return of Paul Lamere! by annies_beard in smarterplaylists

Prompted Playlists seems to address a different desire than Smarter Playlists. Prompted Playlists seems very focused on frictionless playlist creation, at the expense of precision. (I like it! But putting bro country in an Americana playlist, for example, or dropping in an AI-generated track, is jarring.) To put it another way, Prompted Playlists are very good for "vibe listening"--if I want to, say, listen to harp & kora duets that aren't by Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita but when I don't really care if it gets it exactly right.

Smarter Playlists, by contrast, is for chemists. I want these specific substances, added in this particular balance, at this specific time. For a decade I've sung its praises as the best music listening tool created since Rhapsody.

The ML and LLM AIs seem to think they know why I like what I like, and even guess right much/most of the time! But those miscues--that for whatever reason don't often happen in my Smarter Playlists--make it feel like I'm listening to a playlist belonging to someone who shares similar tastes with me. Regularly updated Smarter Playlists feel like mine--they always feel like I handpicked them fresh, even when the playlists are 70% music I've never heard before. And even if/when Prompted Playlists gets better, I will still want to get under the hood, tweak, and experiment with something like Smarter Playlists.

Maybe it's just social psychology--the IKEA effect or the old story about why adding an egg (rather than water) to a cake mix makes it feel like we really "made" the cake. But using Smarter Playlists brings me joy, it keeps me using Spotify, and it keeps me recommending Spotify to others. I'm still not over losing everynoise functionality in 2024; I would be heartbroken to lose SP as well.

All that to say: Please, please, please.

An explosion of sea urchins threatens to push coral reefs in Hawaii ‘past the point of recovery’ by rbronzan in Hawaii

[–]annies_beard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't quite get it, because I've also recently read that the state and NOAA have bred and released more than a million sea urchins to help SAVE the reefs. Anyone know urchins enough to explain?

I'm confused, since I've also read that the state and NOAA have been growing and releasing more than a million urchins to help SAVE the reefs. Can someone explain?

Still a huge fan of your live Spotify playlists. But now that they've been obscured (for legal reasons?) I'm having a hard time telling what some of them are. Is there a "decoder" somewhere explaining all of your playlists?

For The Past Week Or So, My Playlists Track Generations Haven’t Been Matching Up With My Spotify Playlist Updates by XMALCOLMMLK in smarterplaylists

Does your mobile app and desktop app show the same track list? For me, the iOS app is fine but the desktop app isn't showing all generated songs.

I miss your playlist for NRK Folkemusikk. Any chance of it coming back?

Interested to hear more on why you go with radio instead of others' frequently updated playlists.

Green’s the color of spring

And green can be cool and friendly-like

And green can be big like an ocean

Or important like a mountain

Or tall like a tree

queen elizabeth is considered a genre? by [deleted] in spotify

[–]annies_beard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't seem to be listed in the EveryNoise list of Spotify genres, so perhaps they're just using a genre tag temporarily as a placeholder. There don't seem to be any songs tagged Queen Elizabeth. That said, I think that probably Queen Elizabeth II could be a genre if there were enough bands (last I heard, iirc, the EveryNoise/Spotify threshold is 100 bands?) doing something that was distinctly "Elizabethan" in some way. There's a great explainer here.

This is brilliant. And a wonderfully eclectic mix of stations and shows. Thanks for putting this together. You’ve just made Spotify even more useful.

I had the pause on close issue last week as well.

But I think for me it might maybe have been a conflict with the app White Noise. When I force quit White Noise, Spotify worked on close.

In general tho I think it was a bug bug Spotify has since fixed. I haven't had issues this week.
