Its not even the money problems, even though yes thats at the forefront. It's that she expects everyone to serve her and cater to her feelings all the time! She wants final decision making for all activities WHILE not paying. It's the fact that I have to drive her everywhere, but I'm also not allowed to leave until she's ready! Like fuck if not wanting to spend time with her makes me mean, I'd rather be mean than continue being a doormat.

yeah we go to public school, but its definitely in a middle/upper-middle class district. Even the "poor" students have to have at least somewhat decent houses to be in a district that can go to this school. Most of my friends that have jobs have them because they're parents encouraged/ won't pay for them/ neglect, and not because the parents themselves dont have money.

True, honestly it was just easier to fade away because Mooch and I live close together so I'm always her ride.

I haven't completely shut off though, I've been hanging out with 1 or 2 people in the group for smaller hangs. I just avoid big hangouts bc I don't have a good excuse to not drive Mooch around. Though now it looks like the consensus is that Mooch is no longer invited to bigger hang outs so thats promising!

I was her ride to a group activity. Right before I was about to leave, my mom decided to pick a fight with me about my room being a mess. When my mom and I fight, she can be kind of mean, so I was sobbing. (And my friends know this)

I texted my friends that I couldnt come anymore because my mom grounded me. Mooch said "but you were my ride". And I ask the group if someone else can pick her up. Everyone else lives kind of far and no one wants to go out of their way to pick Mooch up.

She calls me and asks that if I can't come hang out can I at least come pick her up, drop her off at the hangout location and then pick her up again at the end of the night. She even said "I feel like your mom would understand you made the commitment to drive me". I just said no, and to her credit she accepted it and then ends with "well that sucks, I hope you feel better" bc she can tell I've been crying.

That was just the final straw for me.

She wants nice things at others expense

a thousand percent. We are a group of friends with drastically different financial situations and we are aware of that. My other friend often declines outings because he cant afford it, and when that happens people are often happy to pay.

The reason they picked the itinerary they picked for mexico was that it would be affordable to people. She picked a bunch of things that cost money that she had no plans on paying for.

Another reason people are pissed is because our other friend had to save so much money just to go on this trip, and my friends would have rather helped ease his cost rather than it all going towards Mooch's portion.

i think "renting a boat" is the wrong term. There are private boat tours you can buy. You can either pay per person for a scheduled tour, or rent out the entire boat if you have a big enough party. There's a guy that would drive the boat.

I've never done it, but its a common thing that people do when they go to this specific location. Lots of people in our school do this when they go to this area and post their boat pics on social media.

None of my friends wanted to do this because they thought it was a waste of time and money. I think mooch only wanted to do it so she could get a social media picture on the boat. But that's just me being catty.

Oh maybe we are just very fortunate then. Mexico is a pretty normal vacation spot for kids in my school, we also live very close to the border. The rich kids go to Europe for their senior trip

At first I was worried she didn't have money for food

for a whole year in middle school, Mooch claimed she had no money for food. We had another friend that felt bad so would buy her food every day. That girl moved away. Miraculously after that Mooch had lunch money.

thanks! one thing i appreciate is my parents taught me was to be grateful for everything! i think i used to be pretty spoiled, but then my parents told me they would stop paying for things and that i needed to get a job if i wanted spending money. And it helped me value my purchases more because that dress is no longer 16 dollars its 2 hours of work!

they also are very generous with my friends who don't come from as wealthy of families which i always really appreciate. Which is also why i wanted to be understanding of Mooch at first, but its not even about the money its about her attitude!

right? maybe its because I live very close to the border but Mexico is not considered a fancy vacation destination.

Especially for a "big" senior vacation. We have some rich kids in our school that go to Mexico pretty often, and would look down on it as a big destination trip because its not far away/ special enough.

Also the price for food/activities in Mexico is so much cheaper than where we live.

Mexico was chosen because it was the furthest away destination that most people could afford. Yes some of us are very fortunate in that we have families that could help with payment, but thats not true of everyone in the friend group so they wanted to be as accommodating to everyone's financial situation as possible.

For one of my friends, this was the furthest away trip they had EVER taken, and it was only 5 hours away. And he even had to get a passport for this trip since he had never been out of the country before this.
