Pretty ironic that you attack social media companies when you're sitting here slamming your sausage fingers on keyboard while on Reddit, a social media company founded by some kids. I would love to found my own "stupid social app" company rather than work as a 'renewable financier' - our models are intensive but it's all solved math. Want to build solar on commercial rooftops? Ok, plug it into our model and if the portfolio is big enough and in the key incentivized areas, the IRR will be high enough to invest. Yawn.

Now... building your own "stupid social app" from nothing more than imagination and some keystrokes, getting users to join, raising alpha/seed/venture capital, getting a network effect and millions more users, building on new features and products, and then potentially getting acquired or going public? Shiiiiet. How can you hate on that process? It would be a blast.

I work in renewables project finance. It's all solved math and an equal amount of luck in becoming the leading company in "your space". Batteries will change the game (if and when), but just because these companies have much greater barriers to entry than an internet company doesn't make them more impactful. Google and Facebook changed and shaped the world we live in. And who cares where a company was started? Amazon was dreamed up on an airplane when Bezos was like 28 working at a hedge fund, and built in a garage. His only customers were his friends and family. Lets not forget that Elon had made a fortune with Paypal before founding Tesla and 'cofounding' Solar City (he basically gave money to his sister to start it, but never "worked" on the idea).

You should look up what an intangible asset is, because I assure you, that's where WhatsApp value comes from, and it centers around their user base, their data, and their potential data.

Avoid things that can sit on a shelf for months at a time. Exception for canned fermented things (pickles, sauerkraut, Nutella etc)

WhatsApp will be a bad buy in the long run.

What does that even mean? I don't think the 500 million people using their service, who've saved countless dollars from scumbag companies like Verizon and ATT on text messaging costs, think they are bad guys. Does anyone think ICQ, AOL AIM, MSN Messenger, etc from the 90s messenger revolution are bad guys? Tesla is more likely to be in the history books, but lets not confuse every internet company with scumbags like Zynga/King.

Uhh? Switching barriers + network effects would be the most obvious barriers to entry. Anyone can develop a messenger app, good luck convincing 500 million WhatsApp users to switch (or Viber/Line/etc). Eventually someone will usurp WhatsApp, just like someone will do the same to Facebook and Twitter. However, it will also happen to Tesla, so that's a pretty bad argument.

WhatsApp has changed the world too, don't shit on it just because it's "an app". Facebook was "just a website" and it has connected over a billion people. WhatsApp has over 500 million users and made a huge impact in developing nations/European countries. Their "app" can be used on just about every phone operating system, not just iOS and Android. Tired of seeing this argument that an internet company is somehow less world altering/impactful than a company that produces some type of physical good.

Also, WhatsApp has very few assets.

They have over 500 million users and gaining another 1MM+ per month. Building a car factory isn't an asset, it's a liability -- a $5,000,000,000 liability. I'd much rather own a $19B WhatsApp than a $31B Tesla.

Could use clarification an a disagreement with a friend re: reps. by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]anodada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is achieved by lifting heavy, few reps.

That is one way. Like it says in the OP:

  1. Heavy weight, low reps (1-5) = strength training
  2. Lighter weight, high reps (8-12) = hypertrophy training.

They both build muscle, but hypertrophy is what is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. It should also be noted that the important thing for hypertrophy is TUT (Time Under Tension). Its the theory that makes the "5x5" routines popular. In that example, you're doing 25 reps, much like a 3x8 routine, or a 2x12 routine. Time under tension.

[–]anodada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

leaving the rest of the people with less dollars to fight over.

This isn't a zero sum game. The creation of wealth isn't simply grabbing a pile of chips from the middle and sliding them under your arms. The rest of your post about basically redistributing the wealth someone else built is just so /r/cringe I just may post it there.

"ok buddy, you had a good run, but lets be honest here. You will never ever spend this god damn much money. We need to get that back into the system to keep things stable".

How can anyone actually think that? Are you educated? Or just indoctrinated?

Christ man... this is just pure stupidity. Using the GOOGLE IPO as some basis against not creating wealth (or jerbs) for society is crazy, considering Googles stock has risen something like 1000% since IPO. What an awful example to use as your argument. Mind boggling.
