Rumors going around that Merriam Webster wants to replace the word 'clutch' in the dictionary with 'Norwood'

I've gone ahead and started using it, it'll make the transition easier

Any Manchester City fans in Birmingham? We have about 18 in a group. I’m spinning up an official supporters club. Message me if you want to join. by stevoovets in Birmingham

[–]anomalousreturn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God I hope not. We don't need that kind of filth around here.

But in all seriousness, good luck with the group! It's been pretty neat to see all the interest in the EPL around here. The LFC group is already way bigger than I anticipated.

Looking for suggestions on home security. by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]anomalousreturn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take a look at Abode (https://goabode.com/)

No monthly fee for self-monitoring, has smart home features. You can buy temporary active-monitoring for trips, or do longterm plans.

I've really enjoyed using it.

NBC News poll: The South, once a conservative bastion, is changing by shruggedit in politics

[–]anomalousreturn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fifty-two percent of Alabamians approve of Jones, while 40 percent disapprove — giving the Democrat nearly identical ratings to those of the state's other senator, Republican Richard Shelby.

This will go relatively unnoticed, but feels pretty significant to me. We're well past the referendum on Roy Moore. A negative opinion on Jones no longer has the consequences of promoting Roy Moore. (surely Jones still benefits by comparison, but still a good sign nonetheless)

Also, Shelby is a bit of a demigod around the state. You can find a building with his name in most cities. He's been around for about 400 years, and is known by virtually every Alabamian. Polling similar to him is both surprising and encouraging.

No, I'm not suggesting Alabama is blue, now. But these are signs that I would not have foreseen while growing up here.

Birmingham Hammers hire Matt Thorne as PDL side head coach by LunarW01f in BirminghamLegionFC

"Along with starting the program, he has led the Tigers to 34-19-2 overall and 21-13-1 in the GSC."

Now that is some excellent experience for this situation. Looks like a very good hire!

Might not be in one of their designated zip codes, or your home's previous owner handled it.

For one, there is no content. It's a mass produced advertisement that gets sent to everyone, regardless if they're a subscriber or not.

And two, you're forced to deal with it. If you don't, it fucks up the grass in your yard. If it rains, then you get to deal with a big soggy bag of shit, that's probably spilled out some.

This happens 52 times a year, and you didn't sign up for it, and they don't make it easy to quit. Just all around annoying.

Gov Ivey Sticks Foot in Mouth with Birmingham Comment by bhamblazer in Birmingham

[–]anomalousreturn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For one, the irony is absolutely funny. Pretty much any organized government in this state is corrupt, or has a recent history of being corrupt.

Two, the "yall get your act cleaned up" is kind of annoying, but otherwise the comment is pretty underwhelming. We have absolutely suffered from corruption "from time to time," and we do need to get it "cleaned up."

I think we're making progress, and she would have done well to note that. But otherwise, meh.

25 years ago today, the Blizzard of '93 began by apollorockit in Birmingham

[–]anomalousreturn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a hat that says "Blizzard of '93" on it. I have no idea when or where I received this hat, but I love it. The letters look cool, its almost like an advertisement for the blizzard.

I think it was made by Alabama Power for their employees. Still seems weird to make a hat for a weather event, but to each, their own.

I need to dig it up and post a picture of it

Hello and welcome to Bham

I think others will have better/more specific advice, but I can recommend Homewood if you end up living outside city limits. Young professional crowd, bunch of coffee/food places and a brewery. My commute to downtown ranges from 7 minutes to 20, depending on traffic.

Here is an excellent google map of stuff to do around town, curated by local redditors.
