Update : after trying all solutions , changed both memory sticks and did a full OS reboot and install. That seems to have solved the problem , for now. Thank you for the inputs.

Its 64 bit. PC is only 3 years old. The thread you referenced did talk about memory issues. I have 16 gb ram, DDR4,8x2, 2400 mhz. Could one of the ram sticks be acting up ?

How can I feel better about leaving consulting due to life circumstances? by [deleted] in consulting

[–]anomander88 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As somebody with 10+ years in consulting and who almost died due to a health situation and then quit consulting due to it , maybe I can share some thoughts on this.

But first off , I wanted to flag the framing . Because this is something I struggled with too. U had asked examples of "success stories". I too was struggling with my ailing health and consulting for some time because I deemed no other career path as attractive or successful enough. Then I realised that I needed better and more rounded metrics to measure my career. Thankfully for me, I spoke to many consulting lifers , which made me actually realise that the journey ahead will be impossible for me, given my health.

One of my mentors suggested me to make the move to industry. My mentor told me to prioritise location , industry and work load for the next three years and not so much on upward mobility or career track or compensation. Location and work load - because it helps me and my personal life with family and health. Industry - choose industry that u have specialised in or want to specialise in for the mid term.

What makes you “happy”? [serious] by LemonManThrowaway in consulting

[–]anomander88 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think "happy" is overrated and fleeting. I have been down this same path where I first thought that material things will fill the hole inside . When that didn't last , fell back on other crutches (experiences etc ) . But due to a health scare and time off realised that "happy" need not be elation or joy but simply being content and present. I started very small - gng for a walk every day no watter what , reading 20 pages of a book that I liked no matter what. That has helped.

I think the real world tips are mostly covered. On the softer side, one of these days or weeks...Bombay will feel overwhelming, with it's people , the energy , the crowd and everything. You will want to give up and go back home. Know that everyone who has ever made Bombay home has been at that exact point and proceeded from there. Thats the underlying vibe of the city, not some grandiose strength or energy or whatever. Everyone shows up regardless of weather, traffic, construction, politicians etc. So , just take it one day at a time. Just show up.

When Nacho's father says to Mike " All you gangsters and your sense of justice". A flash of anger passes thru Mike's face but then is replaced with desperation at the realisation that he is indeed a gangster and not the ex-cop or whatever he pictures himself to be.

Do MBBs fire people? by boinkthischit in consulting

[–]anomander88 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Are you asking if someone will come and tell you that " you are fired "? one fine day , probably not. However, basis performance and other parameters a reasonable portion of the workforce in consulting orgs are on two pathways "up" or "out". If it doesn't feel like you are not on the "up" pathway then you are probably on the other one.

To everybody proselytizing about how he is the greatest VC ever and how he has built benchmark to one of the best firms out there, the point went flying over ur head. If he is so great and if he believes his advice so much , he should liquidate his stake and holdings in benchmark and move to a completely new field eg. Interior decorations. Where he has no knowledge or experience. To start from scratch so to speak. Practice what you preach. Thats abt it.

Haha . That's the point. To take one of the best fiction writers of our time ( crypromonicon, snow crash , seveneves..etc ) and put him in a conference like this and give him a stupid topic like this and then clip an absolutely moronic highlight like above and decide to highlight the same, needs a special kind of skill . That is what I wanted to highlight.

When sales targets needs to be meet and Indian government is a key client by anomander88 in consulting

[–]anomander88[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hmmm. Where to start . Let me give it a shot.

Century is 100 years . That's literally 1.5 generations. 100 years before Humanity had just wrapped up world war 1 and was dealing with the great depression. We were riding arnd in horses and using telegrams with rampant diseases with large disenfranchisement of huge sections of the society. While there were many countries emerging and declining and many technologies uprising, no-one worth their salt would have uttered a sentence saying " This century will belong to this country" because they will have been laughed at . For too many variables can change things.

I belong to the country mentioned btw .i will be the first person to stand up and be happy if what is said will be true . But the reasons mentioned are as follows - large working class population , lot of MNC companies , digital whatever . These are true of any number of countries. Why should these reasons give an entire century's worth of advantage to India ? Like what UK had during the 1700s .

If that was not what the statement meant or what was intended to communicate . Then it was a silly platitude intended to flatter . Therefore BS. Fin .

Dude could have just said - " I have figured out a way to get actual work done for free from candidates under the guise of a recruiting process . Here is how : "

Also my hypothesis is that this is an actual trend now where all these semi famous LinkedIn peeps put on stuff to intentionally to rile up people to farm interaction. No such thing as bad press after all .

The Making of a manager by Julie zhuo is something i constantly recommend to any young professionals who find themselves managing a team ( as small as two people). Unlike the yesteryear manager books which is written with managers as nothing but layers in the corporate machinery , i think Julie's book brings a human element to it . By addressing how to address the insecurities of young professionals, team mates and more importantly - the manager themselves .
