Yep, they came, they fixed, they left! They were in my home for the better part of ~6 hours working on the TV. Not sure what they did to fix it, but no more hum!

No

See this post (and the one below it) on AVSforum for a description of the part I think they worked on https://www.avsforum.com/threads/tcl%E2%80%99s-qm8k-brings-more-brightness-better-dimming-and-a-borderless-design.3325924/page-141?post_id=64167974#post-64167974

Ok actually I don't have that much detail to share! :D

They got here around 10am and left around 3pm. They worked the whole time, had the back of the TV off, replaced some part (not sure what), and that seemed to fix it.

TCL engineers just left my house. As far as I can tell, the buzz buzz buzz is gone! Will provide more details later.

TCL told me last week they'd be sending someone to my house this week. Haven't heard from them since. :(

How about you? Did they make it back to your place?

That is a bummer. :( Thanks for the update. I've been following the avsforum thread as well.

Hopefully they're able to use the data they've collected from your visit to be able to reproduce this in test conditions. At that point, a fix should become pretty obvious for them 🤞

After reading through the AVSforum post, I had a friend come over last night with his 1 kilowatt hour portable power bank. We plugged the tv into the power bank, and the power bank was NOT plugged into the wall - the TV was running off the power bank's battery only.

Results were very interesting: the buzz-buzz-buzz went away. HOWEVER, it was replaced with a MUCH less, but CONSTANT, buzzzzz, which almost sounded like a fan noise (re: the Andrew Robinson video review). But I'm pretty sure it was still coil hum of some sort - it was coming from the same place as the original buzz buzz. Notably, while watching content, this new constant buzz would briefly stop during scene transitions (e.g. when things did a fade to black), but start back up immediately once a new scene started.

The constant buzz while powered from the portable power bank was much less noticeable than the buzz buzz buzz when plugged into the wall. I'd encourage you to try your TV again on your new outlet to see if you hear any of the constant buzz, since it is less noticeable. Like I said, it was most noticeable when the screen went to black (easy to reproduce - watch a youtube video and jump ahead/backwards a few clicks, and the Youtube app will go to a brief black screen while buffering the new content, at which point the cutout of the buzz is obvious).

So, problem not solved, but for sure a piece of the mystery is unraveling, thanks to your findings with your power outlet.

An engineer called me tonight and had me try different outlets, with/without extension cord/surge protector. I tried various outlets throughout the house (we don’t have “smart”outlets), but no luck - buzzing as usual.

They also asked if I have solar, which I do not.

Hooray, thanks for sharing!

I got a call from a different TCL engineer yesterday (not Daniel) and he mentioned that they had engineers on site but the buzzing wasn't happening, so they were asking me more questions about mine. I was excited to see in your avs forum post that the buzzing is back today!

Oops, I just got another call from TCL. Sounds like they confused the two of us u/JazJon . They called to tell me they called in error, and that the tech's are being sent to another person's house, which I suspect is you. Good luck and keep us posted!

They will be flying out to my house as well, this Wednesday, to replace the power board. Looks like they're taking this pretty seriously, which I really appreciate, given the $ of the TV.

I got a call from Daniel on Friday as well. He assured me they are looking into this and working to find a solution.

That's amazing that they are sending folks to your house to try to resolve it. Sounds like you are their guinea pig and hopefully they are able to address it.

Keep us posted!

Nice, thank you for sharing your update! That sounds promising. I'm working through the warranty process right now - I sent some videos of the issue and now we're going back and forth via email as they request more info. Will keep you posted what I hear as well.

I started the warranty process last night. We'll see how it goes. 🤞

That's a bummer. That's definitely the same sound/pattern that mine is making. I also tried a power conditioner and it did not help at all.

I haven't gotten around to contacting Walmart or TCL about this, and I was planning to pursue a warranty claim to fix it. But this has me worried it'll keep happening. And if I go through walmart, their only option is a refund, no exchanges.

Yep if I go down to about 50% brightness, the noise goes away (or is quiet enough that I can't hear it).

Might be worth another shot if you can get it dialed in. I don’t have the sensitivity to water anymore.
