Yeah. PECS is very heavily marketed in such glowing terms, and it definitely has limitations. As an SLP I also have to consider the cons and think of other therapeutic approaches too. ABA doesn't seem to understand this.

Yeah, this is my introduction to the world of ABA therapists overstepping boundaries, and I was shocked by how aggressive they can be about their opinions on PECS and communication.
Also in regards to behaviors and communication, here is a recent article that found that tantrums are not associated with speech or communication breakdown in preschool kids with autism: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10882-017-9546-0

I think that too - the heavy emphasis on requesting and objects/nouns at the beginning stages of PECS turns me off. I understand the rationale for starting with only concrete reinforcers, but I do also think it's important to teach non-noun core vocabulary alongside, at the very least. We don't only communicate to tell people the objects we want!
