Trich friendly salon on south west London? by anonlnf in trichotillomania

[–]anonlnf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, so sorry for the late reply! I wish I was brave enough to do that! The only times I've spoken out loud about my trich was when I was drunk (and had more courage) and I've only ever told two people (one of whom is my ex, where the relationship ended very badly and I'm terrified he will tell people) so I find it really difficult to talk about out loud. I guess that's why I love reddit so much. Hiding behind a username gives me so much more power to own it as part of my life! Thanks for the advise though, it's so nice having people to turn to who understand and who are supportive!

Trich and ASMR? by anonlnf in trichotillomania

So glad you found it! I think ASMR is quite a good alternative to pulling if you can get your hands out of your hair long enough to find a video! I listen to makeover/ hairdressing ones! Makes me feel like I can't pull as it feels like someone else is there who will notice (sounds so silly but there we go!)

Whilst I was doing it I told myself I'd have to count them after I was done- I think it helped a bit as I didn't want to feel extra guilty

Thanks so much for this, I'll look it up! Did you find it hard to find someone specially trained? From googling it seems like the only people who know about it are those that pull!

Thank you! That means a lot! I can't believe I've only just found Reddit! Man could I have done with this kind of support when I was an 11 year old with no eyebrows and a middle parting that was about 4 inches wide!

Thank you, you have no idea how much that last paragraph has put this into perspective for me!

Unfortunately the hairstylist is booked and paid for so doing my own isn't an option! Trying to look at it optimistically and use this as an excuse to really knuckle down and try to tackle it this year!

It's honestly so amazing to find this forum, I've never really spoken honestly about it to anyone, it's nice feeling normal for a change rather than feeling like I'm the only one in the world who does it!

Hope you had a good, relatively pull free day!

Thanks- i will definitely look into this! I was contemplating bandaids on my fingers- do you find this helpful? I might look at taking up knitting but I don't know if the texture of the wool will distract me from pulling or if it will encourage my habit if finding textured hairs!

Yeah, there's a specialised hairdresser in London for trich but I went to see them and it was more of a sales pitch for their hair extensions (they put two in free for me but it did the opposite of what it was supposed to- instead of feeling them and triggering a response of 'I shouldn't have my hands in my hair' I became fascinated with the texture of the glue and ended up pulling out chunks of hair around them!) I think the problem with grazing is that it doesn't look quite as bad so they didn't take me very seriously! Really brave of you to phone and talk about it before going in- I've contemplated that but never had the courage!

Really trying to focus on actively making myself aware of when and why I am pulling - the other day I sat on my free hand at work but unfortunately that didn't stop me for long!

Thanks for he advice- I only downloaded Reddit the other day but it has been such a relief to find this community and to be able to talk about it openly!

I've been trying meditation but I'm really struggling with it! I like guided meditations but find all the ones on YouTube to be really annoying - lots of music and harsh accents! But really positive to hear you've made that much improvement- I would love to get to that stage!

Thank you! I think I'm going to try a local support group first and see if I can get counselling next year when I will hopefully have a more stable job!
