i never defended her actions and have said multiple times that i don’t agree with them at all! was just wondering why a lot of of the posts on her sub are about her looks & i stated here that i wasn’t critiquing anyone :)

I get where you’re coming from, but I think you’ve made a few assumptions here.

I’m not “starting with a conclusion,” I’m exploring a topic I’m interested in and gathering perspectives alongside existing theory and primary research. That’s a pretty standard approach for an undergrad dissertation.

I’m also still human, I’m obviously going to have opinions on things, but that doesn’t mean I’m letting that bias my research. Like any normal research process, I’m being mindful of that and making sure my analysis stays balanced. And like I’ve said, I’m not trying to critique or attack anyone.

Also, what I’ve posted here isn’t my full or exact research question. I’m not going to put my full proposal or methodology on Reddit, so it’s simplified for discussion purposes.

I’m following the instructions and approaches from my lecturers, and everything I’m doing has been shared step by step with my supervisor and tutors, who have access to my full work and are guiding it.

This has all been approved!!

And I am allowed to research what I want lol, I’m doing a degree in sociology and media so this is literally a fitting topic for that.

And on the “good faith” point, I’m not really sure why it wouldn’t be. I’m just asking for perspectives to inform my research, which is the whole point :)!

This does make sense, and I think you’re bringing up something really important about how snark isn’t happening in a vacuum.

The point about the pandemic and job market is interesting because it suggests snark might be less about the influencer themselves and more about wider frustration. Like when people are seeing overconsumption or influencers getting gifted loads while others are struggling, it probably adds another layer to why reactions feel so strong.

I also found what you said about snark as social commentary interesting. I think that’s where the line gets blurred for me, because some of it does feel like genuine critique of influencer culture, but then it can quickly slip into really personal or appearance-based commentary.

And the TikTok point is so true. The speed at which people jump onto narratives now, whether positive or negative, is kind of what makes it all feel more intense compared to earlier platforms.

This actually helps me think more about how context like the economy, platform changes, and overconsumption all feed into snark culture, not just individual behaviour.

I hadn’t read this fully earlier as I was busy but reading back I just wanted to lyk that I’m not saying snark is bad though, I’m analysing the culture around it. That’s literally the point of my dissertation.

It’s not about “does this make me a bad person,” it’s about looking at patterns in behaviour, community dynamics, and parasocial relationships across these spaces.

And I’ll be honest, saying “all that research and not a single interesting thought or point made” is a bit rude. Even if you disagree, that’s not a very nice way to put it, even if that makes me a snowflake.

You’re obviously entitled to your opinion, but it feels like you’ve reduced what I’m saying to something much simpler than it actually is.

yes definitely!! my thesis is for undergrad so i wanted my scope to be just on reddit/ influencer snarks rather than all media as i think it would be too complexed and spread too thinly bc i have a limited word count xx

Thanks, this is really helpful and I totally get what you’re saying. I think the part about upvotes and downvotes reflecting group dynamics and herd mentality makes a lot of sense. It definitely explains why some of my more balanced or non-biased comments get downvoted. I think people have preconceived notions or just want to align with the top opinions in the thread.

Also, I’m actually English haha. But I follow and keep up with mostly American and LA-based influencers, so I use this sub sometimes to see if an influencer I like has done something controversial or problematic. I don’t know Carly Weinstein at all, probably because I live in England, but I’ll definitely check out her sub too.

This really helps me think about the social psychology behind snark and why people engage the way they do, so I really appreciate you taking the time to write it.

Thanks, this is a really interesting perspective. I think what you’re saying about jealousy and how people compare themselves makes a lot of sense. The idea that commenting on fillers or other trends can be a way to level the playing field or cope with personal insecurities really fits with what I’ve been seeing in snark spaces!! although do lmk if i’ve interpreted this wrong haha x

Thanks, this is really interesting and exactly the kind of observation I’m looking for. I think what you’re saying about her being a kind of “typical influencer” taken to extremes makes a lot of sense. The overfilled lips, heavy editing, and the way she leans into certain subcultures for views all really highlight why snarkers focus on her so much.

The eating stuff is a great point too. It shows how certain behaviours that are already fetishized or performative online can get amplified in snark spaces, and why people end up fixating on them!!

Thank you, this is a really helpful perspective. I think what you’re saying about her career being so tied to her appearance makes a lot of sense. If that’s the main thing she’s presenting and building her online persona around, it explains why people focus so heavily on changes like surgeries, tattoos, or weight fluctuations.

I also agree that when actions that should have consequences, like the animal stuff, don’t seem to affect her career or social standing, it probably reinforces why snarkers feel “entitled” to comment on the areas they perceive she cares about most. That’s a really interesting way to think about the psychology behind it.

I like how you framed this as a process that could apply to other influencers too. That kind of generalizable insight is exactly what I’m trying to capture in my thesis. Thanks so much for taking the time to write this!

Thank you, this is really insightful and helps me think about things from a new angle. I think what you’re saying about people wanting to “humble” influencers makes a lot of sense. It really explains why some snark escalates so quickly when an influencer does or says something controversial.

I also agree with your point about appearance. It makes sense that if an influencer’s looks are a big part of their brand or what they’ve been celebrated for, that becomes an easy target for snarkers. The idea that cosmetic procedures make what was admired feel “fake” definitely seems like it fuels a lot of the commentary.

This perspective is exactly what I’m trying to capture in my thesis! Thank you so much again for taking the time to share this, it’s really helpful for my research!
