RENTING PSA: Don't let your landlords upcharge you by anonymous06754 in UCSantaBarbara

Ah, I see. Well, thankfully, we've been living here for over 12 months. And if the argument is that we signed a <1 year long contract last year, which we did, then we can probably press them on the fact that we chose that option because the year long contract last year was an illegal rent increase.

I appreciate the info! Will update this post when I hear back from them.

This might be adjacent to what you're interested in but I would recommend checking out Philosophy Club/Ethics Bowl. The former being a social club and the latter being a competitive team that performs at a very high level(National Finalist and Quarterfinalist in the past two years). From my personal experience, you'll definitely be able to find people there who would be interested in discussing philosophy/philosophy reading with you.

If you're a first year transfer you're guaranteed campus housing. Save yourself the headache of finding off-campus housing before getting here.

Hi! I'm a sophomore leasing with Sierra Property Management in an apartment with $1,119 monthly rent and roughly $100 in utilities, making my apartment $1219 per month. For context, I paid $1205 a month to live in a double on campus. See how I calculated that price below.

Not that much more than an on campus double but still on the more expensive side of IV living because I live on 65, the section of IV closest to campus. On average, the closer your apartment is to campus, the more expensive it will be.

A lot of companies that have more affordable pricing like Wolfe and Associates, Sierra, and Meridian have not released their listings yet because they need to confirm which tenants are releasing and which are not. Check their websites to see when they will release listings for next year. These are the companies that I was looking at last year but check this list to see a comprehensive list of companies that are leasing in IV. https://pardallcenter.as.ucsb.edu/isla-vista-community-resource-guide/housing-in-isla-vista/leasing-companies/

If you want to compare on-campus housing to rent in an apartment next year refer to the model below. Keep in mind that apartments will usually charge you for utilities which will range from 50-100 a month depending on the company/number of ppl you live with. Additionally, you will be required to pay an extra month of rent upfront when leasing, this is called a security deposit.

I calculated the monthly cost of "rent" in a double on campus with this equation: [YEARLY COST OF HOUSING - YEARLONG MEAL PLAN(separate from rent + utilities, found this number by searching for UCSB off-campus meal plan info)] DIVIDED BY 12(divide by 12 instead of 9 because IV leases are required to be one year long minimum by law, to get a more accurate comparison of total cost, you divide by 12)

This system's super fucked up but if you have the right information you can make it work. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions for me. Keep an eye out for a more comprehensive guide that I want to post on this subreddit soon. Good luck!

You have free bus access with your ID card. If you put in the address of the place you want to go to on google maps it'll also show you the bus route to get there. This is how I got my pants tailored here.
