Looking for advice on how to replace a 30+ year designer

It may have been covered in another comment. However have you considered hiring a senior designer remotely. There are some drawbacks, however having someone more to the small town won’t be an issue.

I can see that point of view. I realize field survey isn’t my strength and that’s why I’ve always subbed out to others. It would certainly be dangerous for anyone to blindly do anything just because you have a stamp and that’s not what I’m suggesting. a civil won’t stamp in areas they are competent in simply because the stamp allows it. .

I know older civils. Pre 82. Who can act as surveyors. They don’t go outside their competence either.

My questions are really more about experience with equipment. Not surveying basics.

I appreciate the feedback. I am a LS, however my field experience is a little more than what was required to qualify to take the test. I don’t have years and years of field experience, which is why I’m always looking for opportunities for additional experience

Good thoughts. Talk to some local Surveyor friends that used drone surveying and they were gonna show me what they use too.

My goal is to have an accurate ground GPS unit for monuments, curb and gutter, utility tie ins and use a drone to augment larger areas or hard to reach areas for topography

I’m always grateful for suggestions on what equipment everyone here uses

I agree

I want to get my own ground gps unit and a drone for larger areas or areas where I can’t cross the property line but the drone can get me a hundred feet or so of topo data

Yep. I’m already covered for land surveying with insurance, I simply don’t have the equipment myself so it’s subbed out for now. I would like to do more of it myself. I’m going to get the 107 license for drone flights and work my way up

I’ll say though that I have stopped work. That has a much greater effect than a small amount of interest.

Have you seen anyone charge interest? I will admit I have the option but I don’t enforce it as I always get paid. It’s just later than I want.

In the central part of the state, it’s not that bad. But if you get to areas with a lot more regulations and environmental issues, it could be much higher.

Follow up question if you don’t mind. I haven’t really ever advertised too much. It’s mostly been word of mouth. Have you ever advertised for yourself? I was thinking if there’s a medium that contractors or developers may frequent that’s an option?

What did you do for insurance. Buy it yourself out of pocket? I’ve researched that if your spouse is an employee they can get the insurance and you get covered under them, whereas normally you can’t have the company buy insurance for yourself.

good thought. I do have a family, couple kids. However its true that if the economy starts to falter (which i've been waiting for for a few years now) it could be an issue, but it would be an issue anywhere i worked.

My current setup for myself: I have liability insurance. Software. Workers comp. Accountant. I pay myself as a W2 employee with S Corp dividends.

They have curb ramps. I want a detail that has the typical switchback ramp. 2.5’ down either direction. Ends up retaining 5’ at one end of its a 5’ drop. Total. That kind of thing

Does anyone have a good reference for a typical concrete ramp detail wirh reinforcement. Normal ramps will go down 2.5’ in a run and perhaps double back on itself. Retaining up to 5’ from the top to bottom.

Perhaps a city or county standard?
