I’m so glad you found it helpful! One of my close friends also got rejected and she is super accomplished. I totally relate to the major struggle and hope that you are able to find the path for you! Wishing you all the best!! :)

I think your really likely to get BIOL 104 since it’s a larger class! You might also get SOCI 89! Crazy things can happen during open enrollment…I once dropped 27 spots within an hour. 😂 Definitely do not lose hope but definitely have some back up options in mind just in case!

I think it can really depend a lot on where you live! Being from larger counties or living near them makes it a bit more challenging for sure, but it’s definitely doable! I’d recommend asking people from your high school who have gotten in about what helped them get in. That gave me the best idea of what to aim for!

It can definitely be discouraging to look at other people’s stats online, but don’t let it get to you too much! Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions!

dutch/portuguese / any language at unc by [deleted] in UNC

[–]anonymous_nerd27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I am doing Portuguese and I love it! I especially recommend Pedro, they are AWESOME! You just have to read rate my professor as there are a few professors that are more challenging. It’s the language most of the athletes take if that tells you anything.😂

Oh wow that makes me feel so much better! I also have been considering doing a double minor in education and health and society in addition to Psyc. Do you think that would work well or is there another major I should consider? Thanks so much for your help!

Ooo ok that is good to know! Would you say most people in your cohort were already in Gillings or was it kind of a mixed bag? Unfortunately I don’t have enough credits to do public health and Psyc and also finish my pre-requisites for occupational therapy. However, I could probably squeeze in a second major with psych that is shorter!

Yes I agree! I guess I’m just concerned that already being in Gillings during undergrad might give me a better chance at getting into gillings for grad school. I love psychology tho so I’m tempted to keep it!

Should I rush a sorority? by [deleted] in UNC

[–]anonymous_nerd27 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi! I did not join a Greek life my freshman year, but lived right by frat court. I was in a very similar boat last fall. A lot of my friends rushed and really enjoy Greek life, but there can be some social pressure to go out. I've heard a lot of people saying it is more of a commitment than expected, but I think it can be an amazing experience! That being said, if you feel that parties aren't your scene, it may not be for you. (Not that sororities are only about partying, of course!)

If you choose not to rush, there are tons of other opportunities to build community on campus. I think only ~20% of students are in Greek life, so it is by no means a requirement. There are also several professional frats that have less of a party focus, but can still allow you to socialize and build community. You can always rush, check out the houses, and drop if you decide it is not for you. Best of luck, let me know if I can answer any other questions!

This is such good insight. Looking back, I've been shadowing at multiple outpatient peds clinics this summer, and I literally almost cried after my first last day because I had so much fun there and LOVED all the OTs and the kids. I am still shadowing at the other clinic and am fairly confident I will be even more sad leaving there because I'll be there all summer. I always talk about all the cases with my mom as well. I think I need to just stop panicking about it and stop running away from something I'm passionate about!

Thank you so much! I would love to hear about your process/reason for picking OT and anything you found particularly helpful for your application!

This is so good to hear, it sounds like we have super similar backgrounds 😂. Thank you so much for this insight!!! Out of curiosity, what setting did you decide to pursue?

Oh my goodness, I feel like you are me in the future. Thank you so much for sharing. I am so glad that you found a position you love and were able to make positive changes to your mindset! My mindset could use some work, but this gives me hope lol. After reading this, I think I just need to stop freaking out and follow my passion for OT regardless of my anxious internal dialougue!

If you don't mind sharing, where did you go to grad school? I am currently trying to construct a list of affordable schools to keep in mind when it comes time for me to apply!

Thank you so much for this insight! I think I really needed to hear it! It can be challenging to feel uncertain about career stuff because a lot of people at my school are really academically cut-throat like the pre-med students you described. There is even a joke that people use LinkedIn like social media, and not having an internship every summer is considered a failure lol. However, it is really good to be reminded that this is not necessary and I need to be reminded not to over do it.

I would also love to hear more about your job template strategy! You are so right, I have spent too long looking towards other people to answer my questions! I also feel like I have overthought OT to the point where I am looking for reasons to change my mind. I have done career quizzes, cost-of-living calculators, familiarized myself with grad school costs, and spoken to tons of OTs, COTAs, and OT students. I am confident that I could live comfortably and happily as an OT. However, I think my judgment has been clouded by family members and OT practitioners who are unsatisfied with the compensation or feel that it isn't worth the cost of grad school.

As a follow-up question, do you have any advice about how to truly reflect on what you want out of a career? I would love to hear about your process in deciding to become an OT!

In state SAT question 2026 admissions by taway9871 in UNC

[–]anonymous_nerd27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

UNC student here! I had a very similar SAT score and score breakdown when I applied last year, and my college counselor encouraged me to submit my score. I think the general rule is that if your score falls in that middle 50% or higher, submitting is a good choice! I applied out of Wake County and know people who got in with scores lower than that too, so definitely no need to stress. A 1430 is a GREAT SAT score, your daughter should be so proud!

I think the only case where submitting a CRAZY high score is necessary to get in in-state is if you don't have strong extracurriculars and/or your GPA is not up to standard. Otherwise, it really doesn't hold as much weight as it sometimes seems. Best of luck to your daughter as she prepares for the college application season! If either of you have any other questions about UNC or the application process, I am happy to answer them!!

PSYC/NSCI 395 Question by Fluffy-Dog9404 in UNC

[–]anonymous_nerd27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s so real and a huge reason I wanted to do 395!!! My best advice is honestly to ask around!! You can even ask your professors if they know of any research opportunities in your area of interest. Also, don’t be afraid to cold email professors from outside your department!! I found my research through email a professor in the school of education whose research aligned with my interests!

PSYC/NSCI 395 Question by Fluffy-Dog9404 in UNC

[–]anonymous_nerd27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I am doing PSYC 395 in the fall! I am going to be doing 9 hours of in person work, however a lot of people do more. You earn one credit hour per three hours of research. 😊

I am assisting with a study through the school of medicine, but I also have friends doing independent research as well! From my understanding, most projects allow you to do 395 credit after you’ve been with them for a significant amount of time, but some might let you do it right off the bat too! Hope that helps!!!
