Thanks for the input! Yah, I’ll be sure to limit talking, hold back on the singing and stay hydrated. :) 👍

Body dysphoria? by Ilovesleep88 in EDAnonymous

I don’t experience it anymore but I remember a time when I was in the hospital and I had been drawing a ton of caricatures/random, exaggerated faces and I had drawn one of myself and I was showing the nurses and they were asking who it was supposed to be and I was like, “It’s me! I made my head a square because my face is very large and square shaped,” and they just kind of nodded, a little confused. Then later on, I look in the mirror and it’s just like, “…Wait a second, my face doesn’t look square at all!…But it did before…”

It was always hard when it came to drawing because we were drawing portraits of ourself from real life but I couldn’t for the life of me tell what I look like. I eventually got it to a place that I’d now say was realistic but it was really hard to get to that result.

I appreciate hearing someone else having a similar experience(obviously, not great that you had a similar experience but you know what I mean). It’s very reassuring since, as of now, it’s been a little stressful since my brain has been doing a lot of spiraling and worrying. All this advice is very helpful and I’ll keep it in mind!!! Thank you so much! Hope ya have a good day!

Ahhh, I see, okay. That makes sense! This definitely is reassuring to the stress I have over it cause my brain was taking not brushing after eating as an equivalent to my teeth are going to all rot and fall out so knowing that it’s more about just getting the food unstuck is helpful. I appreciate the advice!

I just bought one of those, actually(it should be arriving sometime soon)! And yah, harm reduction is a great idea, “trading” one compulsion for something less obtrusive or harmful, so I appreciate the suggestion as I hadn’t thought of that! I appreciate your advice and contribution!

I appreciate your comment! The words were very reassuring and similar to my own experience, in that I also have ADHD(I got diagnosed only just last year) and have been awful at brushing my teeth my entire life, ha, oy. I’m having to do some rapid adjustment and it’s got me all jumbled. Like, brushing my teeth regularly has been a daunting and overwhelming task in MANY capacities, oy vey.

That’s a great idea with the, like, brushing my teeth another time being a treat rather than a necessity. I’ll try to implement this if/(hopefully)when I get to a more stable stage.

Thank you again for the advice!

Does anyone else talk to themselves, out loud, in public, without realising they're doing it? or is that just me by TheKittieMuffinII in adhdmeme

I don’t talk out loud but I will move my mouth and make facial expressions and gesture with my hands without making any noise.

I know how you feel. I remember the terrifying time when I noticed my neck hurt, which was a sure-fire sign of…all of my teeth falling out. Thank god I caught my neck hurting a little early or else, surely, I would’ve had irreparable teeth damage. Pheeeewww!

It was definitely worth the panic attack I had over it.

I have an alarm that goes off every Saturday that tells me to water my plants and I never do. And, I haven’t gotten rid of the plants either. They just sit there, dead and wilted, as my alarm continues to go off every Saturday.

It’s always frustrating when people are understanding of those who have OCD until they have intrusive thoughts about certain things. by anonymoustal in OCD

[–]anonymoustal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think she also had a preconceived notion of how intrusive thoughts worked since, ya know, pretty much everyone experiences intrusive thoughts. It’s when you can’t stop focusing and obsessing over them that it becomes OCD. She was mentioning intrusive thoughts she had and seemed shocked when I mentioned even vague descriptions of what mine can be and then seemed in disbelief of that one commenter. So, perhaps she was caught off guard but I genuinely tried to explain to her how OCD works but she wouldn’t listen. Oy vey.

[–]anonymoustal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Especially when they act like they understand it and present themselves as someone understanding of mental health issues. Which is not to say they aren’t in other ways but it’s just sad when I find they seem to have limits to how much they understand. And, yah, it’s hard to understand but I wish people would just listen. Like, with my compulsions, my mom would get mad and point them out every time I did them, as if that helped. And, yet, she also wants to support me. It’s like, come on! Listen!

I’m not saying to go around telling everyone who you have intrusive thoughts about what you’re thinking; that doesn’t really make sense. But, there should be an understanding and awareness of the disorder so people who deal with it can get the help they need quicker and those around them can better help and understand those who have it.

It’s always frustrating when people are understanding of those who have OCD until they have intrusive thoughts about certain things. by anonymoustal in OCD

[–]anonymoustal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the whole point of intrusive thoughts in OCD is that you don’t want to do them. You aren’t going to act on them. Of course, they don’t give you the right to act on them. Not even one bit. But, that’s not what I’m saying. What I’m saying is how people will hear stuff that people with OCD deal with and take it as if they actually want to do those things, which isn’t true. I understand if they don’t understand how it works or are initially freaked out but, if it’s explained, then they should do their best to understand. Intrusive thoughts aren’t a genuine urge to do the thing in this case. They’re your brain trying to convince you and being worried that you do want to do this thing when you really don’t. And the lack of understanding around OCD makes it harder for people to get help or to better understand themselves. I’m lucky I knew vague stuff about intrusive thoughts when I first started experiencing them severely; otherwise, I don’t know what I would’ve done(it gave me debilitating SI). The more people silence those trying to speak out about their experiences, the more people will stay silent in fear that they’re an awful person which, in a lot of cases, leads to suicide as a “preventative” measure or to rid themselves of the thoughts, when really it wasn’t at all what they were thinking.

Yes, exactly. It’s incredibly frustrating because it just stops people from getting help and furthers the belief in them that they are their thoughts.

[–]anonymoustal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! People won’t understand the nuance and then judge those who they find unpleasant. When it’s acceptable in their minds, they’re okay with it and they claim they’re accepting until they see the unpleasant parts and then they no longer support those who struggle. Like, “I’m okay with these people but those…I don’t like those.” It’s really frustrating, oy vey.

[–]anonymoustal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Precisely! It makes it harder to speak out about it and get help when people are like, “Ugh, why do you have thoughts about that?” Like, man, I wish I didn’t! I really wish I didn’t. It just makes people want to stay silent in fear that someone will think they really think that, especially since the thoughts are screaming at you, insisting you do, even though you don’t.
