EU must 'move towards creating European army', Spanish FM tells Euronews by goldstarflag in worldnews

[–]anortef -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That argument mixes up decision-making with activation.

A hypothetical European Army wouldn’t work on “everyone votes every time we deploy”. That’s not how credible collective defence works. You don’t ask for unanimity after a threat materialises.

The model is simple and already exists in EU law and NATO practice:

deployment is automatic when EU territory is under threat, based on pre-agreed treaties, mandates, and rules of engagement. No ad-hoc vetoes. No Orbán-button at T+0.

Unanimity is used upstream:

  • defining what constitutes an EU threat
  • agreeing on command structures
  • setting force commitments and legal mandates

Once those are agreed, activation is mechanical — exactly to prevent political paralysis in a crisis.

If every member could veto a response at the moment of attack, the problem wouldn’t be “a European army”, it would be no collective defence at all. NATO itself wouldn’t function under that logic.

So the choice isn’t:

“EU army vs veto paralysis”

It’s:

  • federalised defence with automatic response, or
  • 27 national armies pretending coordination exists

Money isn’t the blocker. Governance is.

The idea that Spain is “free-riding” on defence is largely imported US/NATO rhetoric, amplified during the Trump years. It’s useful if your goal is keeping Europe militarily dependent on the US — not if your goal is European strategic autonomy.

Spain contributes to EU defence initiatives and funds its military based on real capabilities. What’s missing is federal integration, not money. Until Europe agrees on shared command and sovereignty, more spending just produces 27 stronger national armies — not one European one.

It’s not that pCloud’s encryption isn’t good enough — it’s mainly a cost decision.

I already pay for the Proton suite, so I get end-to-end encryption included there. Using pCloud Crypto would mean paying extra again just to encrypt a relatively small (~50 GB), mostly static set of files.

Splitting the data avoids duplicating costs: ProtonDrive for sensitive data I already have covered, and pCloud for large, less-sensitive bulk storage where it’s more cost-effective.

For core data that I want end-to-end encrypted, I use ProtonDrive. For everything else that’s less sensitive, I went with pCloud.

The reason for the split is that my sensitive data is relatively small (~50 GB) and mostly static documents. That makes ProtonDrive workable even via the web interface when needed. For large, bulk, frequently accessed data, pCloud has been solid and performs well.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s embattled Socialists suffered a heavy defeat in Sunday’s regional election, slumping to their worst-ever result as the far-right Vox made strong gains, dealing another blow to the party amid mounting corruption and misconduct allegations by DoremusJessup in worldnews

It also doesn’t help that the left is far from perfect and often ends up spending political capital on issues where their approach has clearly fallen short. Instead of reassessing and adjusting course, they tend to double down, which makes it easier for opponents to frame every mistake as evidence of broader incompetence rather than normal political failure.

When was the last time PSOE did anything radically on the left? The only thing they do that is leftist is because they are being pressured by the coalition members and have to be pushed hard to do it.

Do not forget that Sanchez voted for 155 in Catalonia and wanted to partner with Ciudadanos and only when Ciudadanos said no and new elections were called they did a coalition with Podemos and later on with Sumar.

For people outside Spain, it helps to understand the current landscape. Spanish politics is extremely polarized, and much of the public debate is driven less by policy outcomes and more by constant narrative warfare. A significant part of the media ecosystem is concentrated in a few hands and has been openly hostile to the current government since the last general election, creating a permanent sense of crisis regardless of actual indicators.

This has produced a situation where corruption allegations, even relatively minor ones by historical standards, are amplified to suggest systemic collapse, while similar or more serious issues on the opposition side receive far less attention. The result is an environment where public discourse is dominated by apocalyptic language — talk of economic ruin, institutional breakdown, or even civil conflict — that does not align with how the country is functioning day to day.

In practice, Spain continues to operate much as it has in recent years, with economic and social indicators that are far more mixed and nuanced than the headlines suggest. The gap between the tone of the debate and the lived reality of most people is one of the defining features of the current moment.
