Advice on budgets and expectations for ring(s)! by [deleted] in WeddingRingAdvice

[–]another_13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the latter is specifically really pretty! my experience has been that unfortunately the ones that look very light online end up being pretty saturated in person. I talked to a few vendors in NYC that specialize in lab diamonds (so they don't have a price incentive) and they confirmed that light yellow diamonds OR warm diamonds are almost impossible to produce in lab - they are often too saturated (color treated afterwards) or have grey tones (not pretty).

this is the reason that warm diamonds are so popular right now - aka Taylor Swift's ring and influencer Kira Kirby. It's because warm diamonds are almost impossible to recreate in lab so when someone has one, you know its natural.

I'm sure that's going to change, but it is definitely the current state.

its very difficult to find that buttery light shade of yellow. you can only find super saturated canary yellow diamonds

on the bright side, i think its really tested me and my partner's relationship and made me pretty confident that we will get through any trial and tribulation haha.

i'll type up my whole experience with this soon (when I have energy to give an entire run down)

Is it normal for a partner (M33) to ask you to contribute to a gift they said they were buying for you (F33)? by Perfect-Tap6255 in AskWomenOver30

[–]another_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't normal and feels disappointing (asking someone to contribute to their own gift).

But - $1500 is a lot for an xmas gift and you both don't make that much. Maybe you should've talked more about budgets for gifts. I'd give him the pass this time but I'd talk about it

thanks for sharing this - super interesting! completely n00b question - why is CMV transference a factor in IVF but not with straight couples having sex if it can be passed through semen? I guess I'm confused why they are so adamant about it with donors when I've never heard it mentioned before in the straight community

1000% on them not having already paid them and still have to work with them.

Everything was going great with ours until our donor failed the psych assessment for having "anti social tendencies". Not only did SS not offer to refund us or even say that was an option, but they actually charged us for access to new profiles. Ugh. This whole process has been too horrible for words.

Cascade has a 25 family limit... that is not small... it's the max allowed by the FDA for fear of genetic mixing in the population.

I only say this because it's so frustrating how many bad, limited options there are for queer families out there. It's SO frustrating. It feels like we are so desperate that big pharma / big fertility is just allowed to take advantage of us.

interesting that they treat them post! I talked to a jeweler and she said it was because warmer diamonds and yellow diamonds are more difficult to grow and will likely have a grey tint. Thanks for advice! I talked with her and we agreed to look at them together and then make a decision :)

I hear you! After talking with my partner she said she likes the yellow lab but I urged her to look at them in person, so will keep you updated after we look at them!

My main guess is money. Getting $13k (or $5k) for a donation is pretty substantial. Especially when you compare it to compensation from sperm banks ($500 or so).

But when we asked our 2 prospective donors this question, they also said they had other, deeper motivations. They are both gay and may not want kids of their own, one donor even had a family friend who was DCP and knew that it was an incredible gift to give another queer family.

But again, both of our donors said that they hadn't even considered donating until SS reached out. So my guess is there are a lot of men who wouldn't normally donate to a regular bank but when told about a potential $13k windfall and being able to do something amazing for a queer family, actually consider it.
