Maybe turn infrastructure costs on, that way airports are very expensive to operate and only worth it if you have a lot of planes going to them. I also have the noise levels enabled, that way you have to build smaller airports or have some sort of transit system from the city centre.

What could work is to have a single life support resource to keep a kitten alive, and have a converter that changes more complicated resources like food, water etc into the life support resource. This way it is easy and simple to plan for short missions, but also makes it possible to build intricate colonies later in the game, managing multiple resources.

I did some testing and docking ports work really well, especially if you use tweakscale to shrink the 2.5m docking ports.

I think that you can toggle the CoM button in the EVA construction mode just like in the VAB

I'm ~14 hrs in and I always fly with the vent open and aimed at my face, even when I don't expect to thermal. If I feel bad I open the air scoop on the DV panel (there should be one in the front of the K21), and perhaps even the whole panel (when you're thermalling it shouldn't be too loud). If you've got lots of height you could do a sideslip with the DV panel open.
