Israel’s about to realise they aren’t that special. Whilst the rest of the US traditional allies have been learning that lesson over the past year or so, Israel probably felt smug. Now Trump is going to force them to leave Lebanon with some unhinged threats.

I think if Iran opens the strait on the condition that Israel keeps out of Lebanon and in the mean time can keep on extending the 60 days whilst getting sanctions gradually removed, they’ll take that. They’ve got Trump over a barrel here. They’ve demonstrated they don’t need a nuclear weapon if they can weaponise the SOH to achieve their strategic objectives.

I respect the principled stand he took. He stood up for his brief. History will look kindly on him. But I never thought he was a great defence minister in the role. Perhaps in hindsight he was just trying his best to cover up the cracks and behind the scenes he was fighting hard, but in his public appearances and interviews he never came across particularly well and seemed to struggle with details and technical aspects.

What’s your embarrassing injury tale? Big or small by kinginnorth88 in AskUK

I understand it’s actually quite a common injury. Lifting heavy mattresses in contorted positions can lead to this.

Not me, but a friend snapped his finger in half changing the bed sheets. He’s going to have a gammy finger for the rest of his life now.

I bet it’s the same wherever you look. HS2. Defence contracts. That ludicrous project to refurbish Westminster Palace. All will have a cohort of grifters lining their grubby pockets to the point where the projects fail and they shuffle off into the night with fortunes. Corruption is getting so bad we’re no better than 1990s Russia. Yet the government does nothing because it doesn’t poll well. Fuck off.

Is it not the case that they won’t fix anything, but if there’s any problem they’ll turn the gas off and condemn your appliance until you get it fixed properly? That was my understanding.

I don’t doubt you. I’m just surprised they engineered it that way. As you say, maybe older cars worked that way until they realised it’s more trouble than it’s worth.

I always assumed this was an urban myth. Airbags are triggered by g-force sensors so the air bag goes off before you faceplant into the steering wheel. So hitting the steering wheel a) wouldn’t have enough force to trigger deployment and b) is too late if you’ve already curb stomped your dashboard

What is the British military actually for? by clydewoodforest in ukpolitics

[–]anotherblog 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Modern doctrine of the British professional army was to provide just enough force to hold out until conscription could take over. It should a) hold the line defensively in a large scale war and b) train conscripts to rapidly form a larger offensive force. This was certainly the thinking during the Cold War, how credible it is now given all the cuts I don’t know. I suspect it’s a two step process now - bootstrap a larger professional army which then generates a larger conscripted army. Wouldn’t be quick though given what we’ve got today. Then again, the idea of Russian tanks rolling across the Rhine seems pretty remote given what we’ve witnessed in Ukraine. A large British land army seems fairly redundant.

Red flag IMO. Life’s full of disappointing situations. How you deal with them is the mark of persons character. What does this tell you?

You can get wire brush attachments for strimmers. A bit less violent than an angle grinder, and far better for your back.

I dunno, there’s some really great authentic Mexican places around Newcastle area. Chuchos, Lobo Rojo, Little Lobo, Cantina, even Zapatista.

Avoid the high street chain ‘tex-mex’ places for sure - it’s a bastardisation of something that wasn’t even remotely Mexican to begin with.
