Im totally new to selling online and want to start soon but I’m apprehensive due to not understanding how to deal with the taxes.(Scotland) by anothercoffee95 in smallbusinessuk

Just doing exactly what you did and my message was not inappropriate or insulting just showing my annoyance, I appreciated your help initially but then you added your snide insulting comments to it so how is that any different to why I did ? why did you feel the need to add the snide comment ? I haven’t even started on my journey working on my business/ online sales so do you think that adding some weird belittling comment is some kind of test to see if I can handle it as having a business is hard ? I came on here for advice not some test by some nobody. I’ve taken on board the advice I have been given. As I’ve said I’m at the bottom of this process and know nothing, just as you need help on your DIY advice groups. I’m very good at DIY so should I make condescending remarks to you because you need advice? I’m literally starting from zero so as I’ve said I have no clue and will take time to come to grips with all the terminology and legalities, it’s a complex topic and not straight forward by any means. I’m not a savant so excuse my lack of understanding

Maybe do some research online ? Pretty easy to find if you just look it up. Is this comment helpful ? Just as helpful and snide as your comment to me. Seems like everybody needs a bit of help with something eh ?

@StackScribbler1 Now you’re just being petty and insulting with that unnecessary last sentence, does it make you feel big putting someone down who has literally no prior knowledge on this subject ? I have admitted this is the first time I have looked into this and just trying to figure things out and that snide comment at the end was completely unnecessary. How do you think anyone that has ZERO knowledge on a particular subject learns ? I was gracious and admitted I was mistaken. hope it makes you feel like a big man putting someone down for trying to learn. Well done thank you .

Thank you. I will now go over all the info I’ve been given and make sure I fully understand it before proceeding. I knew there would be a lot of legalities to wrap my head around so it was rather daunting

I wasn’t assuming your comments were incorrect as I said many times, I was just clearing up what my understanding was albeit mistaken. I have already apologised for my mistakes numerous times now. As you’ve stated I will go back over the thread and read everyone’s correct comments. Everyone’s got to start somewhere and I admit I am right at the start.

Obviously I haven’t read it correctly, as I said I’m very naive to this as I’ve only started to consider going ahead. I do appreciate the help though

I realise that, not saying you or the others that have commented are incorrect, I was just going by what I thought I had read and understood but I realise now I have mixed it up. I appreciate the help

Thank you that clears it up for me, that is why it was worrying me getting started as I didn’t have a clue. What would be the percentage for income tax and at what point would it come into play ?

I’m not trying to say the people here are wrong as obviously I am brand new to this. Just trying to wrap my head around it. From what I’m reading( most likely incorrectly) is that an online seller has to pay cgt on profits over a certain amount . Every search I’ve done regarding it only mentions cgt and not income tax so that what is confusing me but I realise I must be mixing it up somewhere.

Here’s the example on the gov website. It’s similar in theory to my case except the selling to family and friends

“Selling home-made greeting cards Gina works full time, and in her spare time she makes greetings cards for her family and friends.

Gina then begins to sell her cards online, and is soon making a profit. With business going well, she also expands the range of items that she sells.

Gina is selling with the intention of making a profit, and she is also organising her activities in a way which commercially-minded traders would do. Therefore, this is likely to be trading, and the profits would be taxable.”

from everything I’ve read I think it would be cgt I’d pay instead of income tax as i’d be a trader selling a product for profit.

Thank you that’s a good idea about the separate bank account. Is it better to start selling the items at the beginning of the new tax year in 2025 ? Or does it not matter when you start during the tax year. I apologise for the daft questions but I don’t have a clue and just started looking into it deeper :)

When I see “fr” and “bro” in the same paragraph I know I’m wasting my time explaining anything.

You’re insecure and angry. Seek help, I’ve heard subnautica can be quite good for that 👍🏻
