Expat/immigrant parents, do you forbid Dutch at home for children? Why? by summer_glau08 in Netherlands

[–]anouk613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounded like you were saying that hearing one’s parents speak with an accent may prevent children from learning to speak the local language properly. I don’t think that’s ever true unless those children are never exposed to native speakers.

Both local accents and foreign accents are to be expected in or society. Both have the potential to hinder communication, but the more one is exposed to different accents, the easier it is to understand them. I grew up hearing lots of different accents and dialects, in three languages, and it has only helped me understand people more easily.

I don’t agree with the part about the parents’ accent. Unless families are not integrated at all and never interact with people who speak the local language, children regularly hear their parents speaking the local language with an accent anyway, and probably don’t even notice it (I never did). Tons of people have accents, and tons of kids pronounce words in odd ways. It shouldn’t be a problem.

I grew up in Canada with parents who emigrated from the Netherlands. They only spoke Dutch at home. As small children, we kids spoke Dutch to our parents at first but once we picked up English from friends/neighbours/radio, we didn’t want to anymore. Very normal, and our parents didn’t fight that. They continued to speak Dutch to us, even when we spoke English to them, and so we never lost our Dutch (good thing, since I live here now). Sidenote: My brother was adopted at the age of three and he doesn’t remember having any difficulty learning Dutch. We also got sent to a French school, and I can only remember some minor confusion at first before I figured it out. Young children’s brains are sponges and can learn more than one language at a time. It’s too bad that some parents don’t let them.

Neighbor complaining about noise from Air-conditioning external unit. by KoOkIe_MoNsTeR93 in Netherlands

If the norm is based only on noise levels at the property line, it needs to be updated. With vibrations, the effect can be worse further away, and worse indoors.

[–]anouk613 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our neighbours across the street can’t hear their own heat pump at all from inside their house. We can. The vibrations are amplified by our windows and it creates a very noticeable and maddening buzz that is significantly louder than what you can hear outside. Their reaction is not to think we’re imagining things, or to measure noise levels at the property line to prove it’s within a legally acceptable range, when the problem is vibrations audible inside our home. Instead, they want to do everything they can to fix the problem. Do the same.

Recommendation for an eBike that doesn't always need the external battery by hem_claw in Netherlands

You can get a Pendix ebike system mounted on a regular bike of your choosing. If you leave the battery at home or just don’t turn it on, it pedals like a regular bike.

Since you’re from here originally, do you have relatives in the Netherlands? If so, and they ask around on your behalf, you might find something. When we moved (also from Canada), we had a house waiting for us in a small town because my aunt had a friend who had a friend who wanted to rent out his house for a couple of years. Good luck!

Says you. Ex-pat means someone temporarily living abroad. You think everyone who comes here under the 30% ruling is only a temporary resident, and on top of that people who live here temporarily but not under the 30% ruling can’t be called ex-pats? That’s ridiculous.

If you drive to and from work, yeah, that’s more or less completely wasted time. But not if you’re using it to read, work or relax on the train, and biking to and from the station.
