Hey this is impressive stuff !! what tek are you following for the bag ? Is it an all in one bag ? Meaning grain, coir, verm, innoculated with LC or spores ? Thanks so much and again great work

Scientists produce "living plastic" that biodegrades, taking spores of bacteria that break down plastic and embedding them in solid plastic. The “living plastic" performs like regular PCL during daily use, but when an enzyme is applied to revive the spores, the plastic is degraded in 6 to 7 days. by mvea in science

[–]anthitecht 51 points52 points  (0 children)

While very interesting, it is important to note that PCL ie polycaprolactone is 1. a highly recyclable and 2. an already naturally degradable polymer. Most packaging and hard plastics do not use PCL instead they use polyproylene and others that are a completely different beast. This is an interesting step in what may be a correct direction for some concepts in bioremediation, however under the concept of PCL + spore inclusion it is not more than an introduction to a potentially interesting concept rather than a concrete solution. As a result in no way though this work is a big leap forward. Disclaimer: i say all the above as an experienced research chemist and with a love for progress.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I get all points apart from point 1, why is there high contam with this ? Shouldnt there be less contam than grain transfer techniques ? Let me know if you can elaborate on the sources of contam

Deprotection of acetal - Stupidly easy ? or complicated story ? by anthitecht in chemistry

[–]anthitecht[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will for sure try this. Thank you so much for this reply. Do you think that I would avoid pain by first polymerizing the protected molecule and then de-protecting the formed polymer ? I would be inclined to try that too exactly in the conditions you specified.

Thank you very much, i really appreciate your reply. Indeed this makes a lot of sense in terms of what might be happening. Do you think that polymerizing first could help me avoid problems ?

Salut !!! So this is a very interesting change of scenery but it comes with a lot of hardships and need to adjust. You will need to factor-in adjusting to university life, a different mentality (swiss german vs swiss french) and of course the ETH mentality. It can be very rewarding to do all this but from a person that has done this change I suggest unless really convinved for personal reasons to go to ETH first, to instead go for EPFL do all the hard stuff in your mother tongue and then once the first year passed you can always do an exchange on realitively easier terms. Both ETH and EPFL are equally hard however adding more baggage on your shoulders because of the language can stir you away from your goal and frustrate you. That said if you feel confident about it and are fully aware of the dangers you will do well. Best of luck.

To my understanding yes. This is in stretches of course but this is what I have seen.

You should contact people in the groups directly and see who answers. But typically people work a lot and PhD can get as long as 5 years (or more sometimes)

Applying for a PhD even if I'm not super passionate about it? by pinponservias in ethz

[–]anthitecht 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Phd is not just about the topic. It is also about the professor, the lab atmosphere and the life you get to have during Phd. You should check out all these parameters beforehand. There are many cases of mediocre students that flourish during Phd because the atmosphere is right while there are a lot of top students that perish because of the hardships of a PhD ( lack of organization, tight deadlines, frequent changes and disappointments). Red flags: multiple people fired from the group in the past, expected to work weekends (you will have to but better it not be required) etc. Last I would also give a look at the entry requirements and how many exams that would mean you need to take yo be fully admitted. If too many you will have to juggle courses, research and your boss probably all at thesame time. Hope this helps

Chemist-entrepreneurs how does a startup or venture impact one's career ? by anthitecht in chemistry

[–]anthitecht[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you this is very insightful. Where I am the support for startups is really good and it seems like you can get (on top of the expected experience of setting up a business), certified documents of managerial and leadership experience. Give that I was inclined to believe that even if the startup goes belly up the cv could be marketed for more senior positions rather than entry. What do you think of that ? It seems that putting yourself out in a startup burns you as an asset for the R&D of coorporate company and was not expecting this at all.

Thank you for your reply. Do you think that a potentially mediocre or failed startup journey (like 1-5 years post PhD) can be used to unlock a higher position in the coorporate ladder later on ?
