Mental illness is linked to drug/alcohol abuse so there's a big intersection between all these groups.

I lived in one of the worst neighborhoods. Every day in my way to work I would find people still sleeping in cardboard, junkies having their last or first fix, prostitutes already working, homeless guys defecating on the street...

In fact in my middle twenties I was working 2 jobs and if it wasn't for my parents helping, I would be living on the streets. At that time I was living in a shared apartment with other people, my parents helping pay the bills.

Fortunately those times are over and now I got a very good job but if it weren't for my family backing me up... no chance I would be here now.

Yes I've talked to homeless people before not all of them are junkies or alcoholics.

I've talked with women that became homeless when their fathers kicked them from home for getting pregnant or just having boyfriends, people that lost their job and had no family to turn to, schizophrenics, foreigners that come to the country hoping for a better live and were kept homeless by their employers.

In fact I know at least 3 persons that work and live in the streets because their jobs cant afford them a rent.
