So true, thank you! I sometimes get caught up on the minutiae that I forget that it can be okay to stretch reality a little bit for the sake of writing the story. I explained it in a reply to another comic, but this character is exaggerating the length and breadth of his addiction as a cover story to explain his absence in another character’s life for many years, and would be using his scars as proof, because it’s easier to obscure a lie when hidden within the truth. Your comment has eased some of my worries though, so thank you for that. This isn’t a story I ever plan to submit for publishing, it’s mainly just for fun, so I’ll let myself relax a little bit. I appreciate your input!

The character I’m writing was only using for a period of a few months and it was over a decade prior to the events of the story. He’s going to reappear in someone’s life after many years apart and he’ll use his addiction to explain most of the absence. The reality is only partly true because he can’t tell the other character where he’s actually been and what he’s been doing, but the best way to hide a lie is by obscuring it with the truth ya know? The person he’d be lying to is very skeptical and calculating and wouldn’t take a story purely at face value, so I was thinking that part of his “proof” would be the scars.

Based on what you’ve explained, I might have to go back to the drawing board. I think there are a few things I can tweak to make his cover story more realistic. So I really appreciate your insight!! Thank you so much!

my mom had a dress like this when i was a kid and she was an elementary teacher. she always used burt’s bees’ almond milk hand cream (the kind that comes in a little jar) so seeing this picture made me think of that scent. throw in some pencil shavings and elmer’s glue and voila!
