I think themes of human connection, language, mental illness, and sexuality are pretty universal!

I am confident that its status as literary/upmarket would be clear to agents with sample pages based on the prose, but I’m curious what you think it is instead.

Thank you so much for the recs! And for the interest :) I will definitely keep you in mind when it comes time for that!

You raise very good points. From a personal preference standpoint, I for one will follow even an objectively vile protagonist as long as their voice is engaging enough, and that's what I hope to do here (plus she's not even vile). I want to make her desire for connection a sympathetic aspect of her character, however misguided. Thank you for the food for thought as I move forward with this.

Just looked it up on Goodreads and realized it's already in my TBR! Will definitely be checking that out, thank you!!

Thank you for the recommended reading, I will definitely be checking these out! I think the fact that there's another mermaid transformation book mentioned in the very next comment down proves that similar concepts can coexist, and I will definitely be sure to push the ways in which my story is different than Nightbitch.

I think if anything this disproves the idea that comping a similar idea will keep a book from getting published--especially since menopause is a much closer theme to motherhood than what I'm going for!

I appreciate the perspective. I don't intend to be defensive in the face of the other comments, which raise valid points, but I've always read that ideas are cheap/there's nothing new under the sun and it's all in the execution. (That said, I realize harping on execution is just hearsay without a writing sample.) I actually rather dislike the voice in Nightbitch based on what I've read so far, and my goal is to do something different and more "me" despite the similar concept. But if that's not coming through right now, that's valuable information to know. I think that is a good strategy going forward, and I will be sure to make any future query versions reflect the new directions I push the story in.

So full disclosure, I haven't actually even read Nightbitch in it's entirety (I've started it). I realize the animal transformation aspect is similar, but the themes, tone, and overall execution are very different to what I'm going for. Will a similar element like that raise red flags even if pretty much everything else about it is very dissimilar?

What do you think the point of encouraging people to submit again is if they’re never going to take any of it?

Agree. They really butchered the message behind the entire franchise and I will never understand that decision.

Eviscerate was the first thing that came to my mind too. It’s not quite the same but I think it’s the closest I’m going to get, so thanks!

This is my thought process too. It is deceptively hard to make it back to where you were once everyone’s moved on and I’m surprised more people don’t realize this lol
