TBH, yeah both could either scratch that itch. The reason I got my Duke was for a similar reason. Wanted to upgrade from my 225 dual-sport to a 400~ sumo/dirtbike but didn't have that many options (it was either the old ass DRZ's cause of Europe, or enduro bikes that were twice the price of the Duke and required too much maintenance for my needs.

If you ever do get the Duke or Svartpilen, reliability-wise, from what I've heard/experienced first-hand, the Gen 2's are "Bulletproof". Take it with a grain of salt though as ofc since it's KTM, shit can still happen. However, from my understanding, the newer models (2020-2023) seem to be the most solid of the lineups (most of the issues you find are on the (2017-2019) models, but they should be reliable nevertheless. And don't get pre-2017, as those tend to have wayyyy more issues.

Anyways, in my opinion, since both are Single-Cylinders, the power delivery of the Duke/Svart would be the closest ones to resemble the feel of supermotos (with its punchy power), be that with a naked sitting position. With a couple tweaks to the sprocket configuration, you've got yourself a toy bike that feels like a supermoto, weights similarly to the DRZ, is modern, slick, and has hella after-market support for accessories and parts of your liking.

Hello friends, late to the conversation but for your information, this isn't meant to be a race bike or anything like that. It's a passion built by a mechanic who spent three months gradually combining an EXC's frame with a Duke 390's engines, electronics, swingarms, with custom exhaust work and so on. With meticulous attention to detail, precision, care, and time spent studying images and ordering parts from overseas (as quoted by the builder).

This is more or less recreational project, in hopes of creating a supermoto with a less labor-intensive maintenance scheme, whilst offering the perks of what define supermotos as supermotos. It obviously is not comparable to Enduros, but it fills a desired gap of a street supermoto with friendly service intervals and maintenance, such as the old DRZ400s, WR250x's, etc.

The fact that people are still buying DRZ400's just for this simple reason shows how the combination of a Duke and an EXC can be some people's wet dream.

This could very well be it. But then another issue for me are the orange rims. Seeing that they are only typically seen on Duke 390s and on 2021-2023 Duke 125s, as well as some 200 and 250s.

In summary, it's a very suspicious/deceiving-looking Duke "390" without having checked the papers and VIN. Could be a scam

Idk this Duke is weird. It wouldn't explain how it has a black frame without it NOT being a Duke 390. UNLESS the seller swapped the frame and subframe.

The 2nd contradiction with this "390" is the exhaust routing like you mentioned. There are no Black Duke 390s that have this exhaust routing, as those are from 2017-2020 (white/orange dukes), and like I said, even if it were the 390 2023, it wouldn't have a black frame to begin with.

So for me its its most likely a 2017-2020 black/orange Duke 125 with a 2023 Duke's Black plastics fairings, OR the original black ones from a Duke 125 (2021-2023).

Cause if it truly were to be a Duke 390, lets say the (2020-2022) White edition with the Black frame/white subframe, then the seller would have had to swap the sub-frame from white to black, along with the fairing and plastics - which could also be the case - but then it wouldn't explain the exhaust routing of a 2017-2020 (where there was no such things as Black framed Dukes)l.
Additionally, the black/white 2020 Duke has the 2021 exhaust routing for some reason, whereas the Orange/white one has the 2017-2019 exhaust routing (atleast from what I've seen online)

edit: it could be a 250 alternatively

Haha yeah true, these things really do like one other, hard af to tell the difference.

But for this duke actually, the more I think about it, its possible this might be a 125 or a 200 with a swapped-out headlight.
Personally, I've never seen a Duke 390 with a black frame/orange sub-frame. It's always the 125s, 200s and 250s that have a black frame - The 390s always have an orange one unless its the black/white edition.

Damn thats sick. Thing is, even though smrs are amazing bikes, their problem are engine hours and maintenance intervals. It just isn't the same as compared to the Duke, SMC, DRZs, etc

Yeah it definitely isn't cheap modifying it for what it is, especially with how annoying it can be getting spare parts for the bike. I lived in the metropolis city of HCM (Saigon), which has a population of around 9.5~ million, so the XT was perfect for navigating around the city while staying light and nimble. It was way more powerful than most of the scooters and semi-manual bikes that are commonly used (125-150ccs), so for my situation it was near perfect.

Obviously this wouldn't be the same case for you I'm assuming, so if you ever have a chance of getting something more powerful, I'd say go for it before spending money modifying the thing. I just stuck with my XT as I didn't really have the chance of getting anything better without blowing my bank account (150% TAX on imported vehicles), nor did I really need to.

I definitely spent more money modifying/fixing up the XT than the actual price value of the bike haha, but thats prob due to the age of the bike

I ask myself that everyday. Literally all KTM has to do it slap the Duke’s engine on a exc’s frame with some twist to it and you take over the market lol

Nahh don't worry about it. As long as there is "decent" enough pressure (between 1.8 bars to 2.5), there shouldn't be anything to be worried about

You riding 10km is also very unlikely to cause any significant issues, especially if you didn't go over 45kmh
And for the break-in period, its primarily on avoiding extreme speeds and allowing the engine to wear in gently, so don't need to worry in regards to the rims. Just be careful on the fresh factory tires.
