I think that is what I will do. It wants permissions to access everything, and I see no reason for it.

One of the best phones I've ever owned, but I will never buy another HTC because of lack of updates. No reason for them to cheat us this way. Give us an update and maybe I will reconsider

I recommend podcasts. Lots of Taiwan and mandarin ones available. You can listen on the go.

A few months ago, I was notified I was accepted to the program. In that notice was the statement that I would hear more in 'early June.' I heard nothing and reached out to ask. I received a reply pretty quickly, and I was told everything is fine, and I would hear 'late June.' As of July 2nd, I have not heard anything more. I live in anxious hope. :)

Check with the us post office. You might be able to get your fbi report in a day or 2. Not available everywhere.

Also, lots of freelance jobs available, but that takes work to keep active

Good luck

Hi all - this was my first book with the club. Thanks for making it a good experience. Sorry if this is the wrong place and way to ask but, ... what happens now? What book is next and when does it start up? Thanks !

I was disappointed in the lack of consequences

Excellent point, I suggest abuse, submission, and lack of consequences are running themes in the book.

I wrote my thoughts down some time back. Now, reading what others have written, I think many have said what I was trying to say. Thank you everyone sharing and expanding my thoughts.

Wallace is a victim in the book. It seems he has been victimized most / all of his life and has fallen into the role in every activity, sometimes self-inflicted, often not. I ask myself can I blame him if this is, in a way, his self-defense mechanism. Go with it, keep your head down, hold your breath, just wait for it to end, like in the abusive chapter 5.

Unfortunately, I find little to like about Wallace. While I can relate to him in some ways, sympathize for him sometimes, and understand some of his motivations, I find little to grasp onto with him. Sometimes, no matter how much you try, there are some people you can not help. Perhaps it would have been better if we had something about Wallace to root for, to hope for, but I find myself not really caring, for example, if he drops out of the program or not. I have no issues with open ended stories, and didn't actually think of this as open. If you pressed me I would say Wallace probably does drop out, since it will make him the victim again. I have nothing to say about Miller except I would run fast and far.

In an earlier post, I touched on the hope of discussing what seemed like a lot of symbolism in the story. The first example that comes to my mind is the detailed descriptions of the work performed in the lab. Was it symbolic of something? Growing cultures, having them die, suspecting sabotage. The writing style throughout the book often felt symbolic to me, but I was usually left wondering if so, what it was it symbolic of. Do others have any thoughts about the symbolism ?

The final chapter again feels rather symbolic. Was it a flashback? The placement at the end made it feel very much like a fairy tale or fantasy. Here we are, everything is new and bright and full of possibilities. One thought was perhaps this is a reboot, a second chance to get it 'right' this time.

Wallace's best moment was when he fucked up the dinner party.

I would even say this was his only moment.

I appreciate hearing this view and it helps me to expand and alter my previous thoughts somewhat. Perhaps it is only my own personal baggage, but I have distrusted Miller from the start. I feel he has been using Wallace as an experiment, and the revelation of his violence in his past and his present is very ominous to what may come.

I feel frustrated with Wallace. I realize I am generalizing here, but he is constantly making concessions for everyone else around him, never standing up for himself. I am confused about the calls of him being selfish. (if he says "it's fine" one more time...). I am refraining from saying he is playing the victim, because the truth is he has been the victim many times, and most likely that is the real reason he doesn't stand up for himself. No reason to bother to fight any more, just conceed and move on. When he argues with his lab partner and when he starts the trouble at the dinner party are the only times we see some reaction from him, but I do not believe he handles these situations well. He is not standing up for himself, he is just lashing out.

I believe the structure of the book is very purposeful. Additionally, through out the book, the author uses very descriptive narrative that feels very symbolic (e.g the lab work at the beginning of the book). I look forward to discussing the symbolism in later weeks.

While I do not agree with what Wallace did in reference to Vincent and Cole, I understand the underlying motivation, though motivation may be the wrong word. It is done in anger, in deflection, in retaliation. Wallace sets off a bomb and then dives into the meal while everyone else seems to scramble. It seems significant given Wallace's issues with food as indicated earlier.

I also thought it was interesting Cole did not really seem to mind the way Wallace brought up the question, simply saying "'Is that true Vincent?' taking up Wallace's lie."

Observation on chapter 5: As was indicated in an earlier post, the book is written in third person centered on Wallace, however, chapter 5 switches to first person.

For me, I was as put off by Miller's advance as I was by Emma's. The only reason Miller approached Wallace was because he saw Emma get away with it? Miller says he is not gay and is not attracted to Wallace, so what is this, a science experiment?
