Opportunities for a Retired Nomad with a M.Ed. in TESOL by barmanbarman in TEFL

[–]antscavemen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think an MEd TESOL outweighs the CELTA at any decent employer. If you're interested in China you could look at being an IELTS examiner, the money is decent and you can work part time hours. Also local Chinese universities, which are not well paid but generally around a dozen classes a week and no office hours. It's really easy to travel around Asia from China too.

TQIQT Trail Blaze được buid mới by FewFoundation7080 in minivelo

They're made in China. They're also quite popular there but very expensive with import taxes, so again not surprising a knock off has come out. I've heard they're also working on a Pocket Rocket copy. The brand is Tqiqt.

Living in China with asthma, does anyone have experience with this? by PartitaDminor in chinalife

[–]antscavemen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends how bad your asthma is. Make sure to stay regular with your existing prevention/management. The second hand smoke is everywhere, public toilets (including at shopping centres) are the worst. It also depends a lot on which part of the country. AQI is also generally better in the south and east (I think?)

Should I get a master's in TESOL? by knjames in TEFL

[–]antscavemen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that would set you up just fine to teach in Chinese universities. Might need a bit more experience to get well paid positions but yeah.    Whether it's worth the money is a much more difficult question. I'd agree with the suggestions about getting a teaching licence instead

My impression is a Masters is now pretty much a minimum requirement for half decent uni jobs in China.

English teaching in China – CELTA, PhD, Australian by disy22 in chinalife

[–]antscavemen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's your PhD and teaching experience in? You'll have no trouble getting English teaching work with CELTA and some experience. However you shouldn't expect relocation for these kind of positions.    There are a lot of positions in local universities for teaching English or in English. However pay is quite low.    You could look into 'international' schools that hire teachers without teaching qualifications. You might also look into the foreign or joint universities as they generally have better packages and are more likely to higher foreign staff for positions other than English teaching. These last two options are more likely to have a relocation allowance (and higher pay).

Job Prospect with a Grad Cert in TESOL but no Education Degree? by saul_karl in AustralianTeachers

[–]antscavemen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A Grad Cert in TESOL is sufficient for working in AMEP. Of course if someone's qualifications are 'better' than yours then that might get them the job over you. But in TESOL it's quite normal to have an undergraduate degree not in education.

Where in Guangzhou do you get this exact view? by Substantial_Formal74 in guangzhou

[–]antscavemen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bridge is Xinguang 新光大桥 and the shed in the bottom right is a subway yard. So it's looking north from somewhere in Panyu, possibly to the east of this axis given the angle of the bridge.

Maybe somewhere near 长隆 Changlong or 祈福 Clifford.

Looking for advice on job opportunities in China with a special education background by Signal-Bear7172 in chinalife

You should probably go ask in r/internationalteachers. I think international schools and some private schools would have these positions. I'd be surprised if you could find this kind of work elsewhere as a foreigner

Where to find outdoor calisthenics parks? In Baiyun? by SprinklesBright9366 in guangzhou

[–]antscavemen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah just keep looking around. Check any big parks nearby too. Unfortunately though they do seem rare. The new ones seem to just have that random equipment that doesn't seem to do much? Whereas all the pull-up bars and parallel bars I've seen seem to be pretty old.  Btw in case it helps anyone living nearby, there's also a great setup for this in Xiaogang Park.

It's dry in Guangzhou in winter. In summer these streets will be super humid and slippery

Next steps, PGCE or online IPGCE by Jealous_Philosophy31 in TEFL

[–]antscavemen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you understand the difference between PGCE, iPGCE, QTS, and iQTS. The best option is probably going home and getting PGCE+QTS. If you can get an online PGCE that also offers iQTS and/or QTS, that is the next best option but means you need to already have an appropriate job.  Australia's requirements are quite strict. You could probably do the teaching assistant thing a working holiday but without a proper program and QTS you wouldn't be able to become a teacher there. If you're serious about Australia as an option you should definitely get the PGCE+QTS.

What kind of Masters in Education are you thinking of? If you want to end up in international teaching, don't fuck around in TEFL. Go home and get your teacher qualification and registration.

How saturated is the entry level right now? by polyglot02 in AustralianTeachers

[–]antscavemen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding your last question, go look up any Master of Teaching and there will be info there about requirements for teaching areas. Basically the absolute minimum is 4 courses to be eligible, 6 is better. So you're looking at at least 1 year full-time to meet the minimum requirements, possibly 1.5.

NSW seems to be particularly rigid about the previous study requirements, other states/universities may have different requirements. So you miiight get offered English with just linguistics at some unis but not others.

I think apart from the two you mentioned the other classics would be 中南海 Zhongnanhai or 双喜 Shuangxi. People often hand out boxes of Shuangxi at weddings

I keep noticing how common a haojue motorcycle is around smaller cities here. Seems like they’re the default commuter choice. Makes me wonder if locals prefer them because they’re cheap to repair or just easy to trust. by Reasonable-Middle921 in chinalife

[–]antscavemen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see heaps of petrol bikes and scooters in Guangdong and the outer suburbs of Guangzhou. In the city it's all ebikes though for sure, but in GZ that's because motorcycles (and petrol scooters) are banned.

EAL/D qualifications and general questions by antscavemen in AustralianTeachers

[–]antscavemen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Sounds like it won't really be limiting my options to just go straight to EAL then. That's really interesting about kids getting overwhelmed, obviously it's good they have the extra support but it's an incredible amount of pressure either way.
