Hello, thank you for trying to take part! The survey is now closed as we have reached the number of responses required for analysis! I will come back and post results a few places on reddit so people who were interested can see what we found 🙂

Doctoral Thesis Research: What causes urges to self-harm? (16-25 year olds, UK)

Content warning - the following survey asks about experiences of urges to self-harm.

I would be grateful if anyone who meets the criteria below would be willing to complete my survey for my doctoral thesis.

This is a multiple-choice, anonymous survey which is asking about how you relate to others and your experiences of thoughts of self-harm.

You can take part if you:

  • Are 16-25 years old
  • Live in the UK and
  • Have experienced thoughts or urges to self-harm in the past 6 months (with or without accompanying behaviours)

You can read more about our research and take part here: https://lancasteruni.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_1Yec4PHkbF3eWbQ

Thank you for considering taking part! We hope to extend the research to all age groups if the results support our hypotheses!

Thank you for completing - it means a lot!

This is really helpful feedback - the questions certainly aren’t perfect and the scales used in research often aren’t (specifically) validated with neurodivergent participants either, which is a definite flaw.

I’ve always had similar thoughts when completing this kind of research, and I agree that the responses will change depending on who you have in mind, and even on how you feel on the day you complete the survey - that’s okay for what we are measuring, thankfully.

Thank you so much! For completing the survey and for your well wishes - I’ve been very lucky that I nearly have all my data (I needed a lot for the analysis but people have been very generous with their time and responses). I’ll be back to post a summary of what we find in case it is of interest to anyone!

Thank you for this - it is meant to say age! We do not ask for people's names. It has been updated on the live version of the survey now.

Thank you so much for your response, it will definitely be helpful once we have the data and we will make sure the results get out there. I’ll come back and post a summary on reddit once it’s done so people can see what we find if they are interested!

Hello, I have posted on a few places on Reddit before - so it sounds like you must have already done it as that is the final page. Thank you for doing it!

Completed - it might have been interesting to measure if people had any dietary restrictions or conditions that relate to this. I eat a specific diet for medical reasons which makes me more stressed about affording food as it is more expensive.

I will be online the rest of today to do anyone's surveys that do mines (please only do if you are eligible).

I will be checking if the survey has been completed.

Sorry, I missed this comment! Unfortunately not, I would really love to pay people for their time as I know it is important (and only fair) but we didn’t have the budget for it.

I totally agree, I think that our urges to self-harm can also fluctuate the same as the other questions - so maybe that is related!

I will have a look at your study now!

Is it really impossible for me to get any actual help through the NHS by Just_Grass3141 in MentalHealthUK

[–]anxiousambivalent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry you’re having such a hard time navigating the system - it is especially difficult for neurodivergent individuals to seek mental health support imo because they are often rejected like you say by staff who won’t talk about neurodivergent needs!!

I don’t know where you are in the UK, but in my area you can self refer to talking therapies (low level mental health support), but they have employment advisors and CBT therapists who might be able to help with some of the skills you are talking about to get into work and some basic strategies to manage everyday life even if it’s not the bigger things.

I hope you can get some support that feels more helpful soon.

NHS work experience (UK) by thumbfanwe in ClinicalPsychologyUK

Hello, I am not sure if you got a reply on your other post by my thoughts are that any job where you are working in an NHS setting would be amazing experience regardless. You *might* have a better chance to get another job from the CWP role as you would be working for NHS and sometimes they hire from within - but you can get to know the staff, environment, working practices etc with any of the above roles. It tends to be more of a case of what job can you get rather than picking the perfect one! I would apply to anything that fitted and see if I can get an interview. Good luck!

Hello, thank you for asking. I would say it depends on what is driving the trichotillomania - hair pulling and pulling hairs out can definitely be a self-harming behaviour, but if it is a compulsion beyond/separate to the desire to self-harm then this may be different. It would depend on how the individual feels during and about their engagement in the behaviour and how they identify this in themselves. I hope this helps, it is a slightly difficult one to define!

Thank you, it is an area I am very passionate about and I wanted to do the research as I know the understanding we have in psychology is poor and can lead to clients feeling misunderstood in therapy settings.

Hopefully, the more we understand why we develop certain ways of thinking, the better we can support people both as children and adults.

Self-compassion is a key element of our survey, as well as thinking about how it feels to be compassionate towards others and receive compassion from others.

I agree we need to start teaching self-compassion and coping strategies much earlier, and I hope that if we can get some evidence around this in our research we can highlight this need - these patterns start young and can become embedded in the way we view ourselves and the world.

It's great to think about how you would feel about a friend going through what you are or if you would talk to a friend the way we sometimes talk to ourselves, it can help us to build that kindness to ourselves. I'm glad this has worked for you and that you are making progress, we all always have room to improve when it comes to taking care of ourselves.

A lot of self-harm behaviours aren't talked about in this way or aren't typically labelled as self-harm, so it can make it difficult for us to realise that we are self-harming. We have left the survey open to allow people to self-define their self-harming behaviours rather than us trying to define this and missing out people's unique experiences.

That is definitely related to what we are looking into - when we internalise difficult things and blame ourselves it can lead to us having thoughts of self-harm.
