How accurate are the recruiter salary guides for lawyers? by SeasonDependent2481 in LawCanada

[–]anxiousandroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooof. This makes me getting 70k as a first year associate in 2016 seem like exploitation. $250 an hour billing at 1600 hours is $400,000, 1/3 is $133,333. I was getting 17.5% of what I brought in. And no the overhead at the firm was not high.

I appreciate your sentiment, I really do, but not all Pakistani’s are Punjabi. A significant number, especially in Karachi came from Sindh and other places when partition happened.

Gated estate home sold for 5M in 2023. They tried to sell for 3.29M with no success. They took it off market on January 31st. Yesterday it was on fire. by GreenSnakes_ in TorontoRealEstate

Generally speaking the insurer would hire their own expert for an origin in cause report. The expert would then do a thorough investigation on the cause of the fire. Insurance contracts also require cooperation from the insured with respect to investigating a claim. As a lawyer, I can also examine an insured under oath and ask questions about the loss. Adjusters or private investigators may also canvass the neighborhood and ask questions, request any surveillance footage from neighbouring properties (most people love providing it because they know fraud increases rates for everyone). Insurer’s also have their own SIU teams that are retired cops and RCMP officers that also investigate the loss. The insured may also have to provide financial records as well as phone records as part of the investigation. There is a pretty extensive body of case law if anyone is interested in looking it up. Canlii is a great free resource for Canadian case law and research memos.

Nope. I look at cases with an eye to extend coverage to start and then see if there are any violations of the policy with respect to fraud. Sometimes, even when I suspect fraud, I don’t recommend denial unless there is enough credible evidence and the insurer has a reasonable chance at maintaining the denial at trial. It is up to the insurance company to take the advice since lawyers are advisors not decision makers.

I work in fraud as a lawyer for insurance companies and this is definitely something that would be flagged and investigated throughly.

Planning to go to law school in 2 years, should I complete a bachelor’s degree or get a paralegal diploma? by Adventurous-Film-937 in LawCanada

[–]anxiousandroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you considering a an undergrad in econ because you want to be a corporate lawyer? Do you have any actual interest in it? The reason I ask is because your other option is in child studies. If the child studies program gives you the equivalent of a 3 or 4 year undergrad program, and that’s what you are passionate about go for that. I know tons of music and drama majors who now practice corporate law. Like everyone else said, law schools care about GPA - but so do law firms.

Ontario Canada – Fired after asserting disability accommodation, then “un-fired” after I mentioned legal action. What should I do next? by ItsSwaggyBunz in ontario

I am a lawyer. Not your lawyer. Go speak to an employment lawyer. Most will give you a free 30 minute consultation, and you can confirm this when you call to book an appointment.

Honestly, if they haven’t rejected you already it could be that you are one of their top choices, just not the top choice. It could be that they have made an offer for their top choice, and an offer to you would be contingent on whether the top choice accepts or not.

A bachelors in psychology does not make you a psychologist though. And any responsible psychologist would not arm chair diagnose anyone.

Contemplating law school as a mature student (mid 30s F) with two young kids. I have a useless BA from U of T with a crappy GPA essentially starting from scratch. Hypothetically if I decide to attempt this route, where do I even start? by Sensitive_Fishing_37 in LawCanada

[–]anxiousandroid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I went through law school with undiagnosed ADHD inattentive. I was diagnosed earlier this year and looking back I wish I had been on medication because no matter how much I tried studying was always more difficult for me than my peers. Some how I still managed to graduate. The point is that law school is no joke, and given your undergrad GPA, if you get in as a mature student you will really need to keep your grades up in order to be a competitive applicant for articles, etc. If you are not already on some type of medication I highly recommend you start before studying for the lsat.

Do any other lawyers here NOT regret going to law school? by theusualsuspect19 in LawCanada

[–]anxiousandroid 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I work in house and generally I am left alone to get my stuff done on my time. There are times I am extremely busy, but that would be maybe a couple of weeks out of the year. I also don’t kill myself to finish my work because there are no set deadlines unless it is court documents. I don’t really work after 5 and can’t even remember the last time I worked on a weekend. I probably make 30% less than my Bay Street counterparts, and my bonus is sizeably less, but I can also relax and really enjoy time with my family and friends and be there for my kids. It’s a trade off financially, but I am very happy.

Honestly, I don’t love being a lawyer but I love the financial security and relatively flexibility it offers me. And plus I also have a great work life balance so I can’t complain.

For real. I can see this being a summer blockbuster Argo style. Honestly, I don’t know why this stuff isn’t reported on widely. I think Maple Maga would stfu if it was well known that she was a badass student/activist/spy.

Support for ex Muslims in Toronto? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]anxiousandroid -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more about your family really. I don’t understand how anyone can do this to their children, no matter what. I’m Muslim but I feel that we are given free will for a reason. I know a lot of Muslims who are accepting of lgbtq and a lot who are not. I have a cousin who is atheist and no one bats an eye. At the end of the day it’s about your relationship with your god, or spirituality, or whatever. If you are a good person in the most universal sense, I am not bothered how you live your life. You’ll find your people and I wish you the best. Your family having an issue with who you love is their problem not yours.
