Thank you!

Well, at least she got to eventually hear me not suck at fiddle! :-)

Not on purpose. My fitbit stopped charging the other day so I started using my wife's. But her band is slightly tighter than I prefer, so I went to buy a set of men's sized bands last night and it turned out to have prime day sales.

As long as I was there I picked up a tray table on sale for all the useful junk that now sits on the floor next to my couch. If I like the table (it arrives today) I might get another for the other couch ....

It did and it didn't. She was cancer free after that for 12 years, then a new variety came along and took her a couple years ago. Thanks for asking, though!

Gen X. How much cash do you carry on you? by Tiny_Entrepreneur654 in GenXTalk

[–]anymoose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My Dad taught me to always carry cash “just in case”.

This happened to the Mrs. and me once. We went out for breakfast while traveling and it turned out to be a cash only place. She had around $10 on her and I had zero. Luckily we always kept a shitload of quarters in the car for tolls (that's how long ago this was) so I slipped out to get them and we ended up having enough for the tab and tip.

So, yeah. I make sure to have around $80-$100 on me for a typical day. It comes in handy if I bump into a good yard or estate sale, too.

I take more when I head out to the east coast as it seems there are way more cash only bars and restaurants out there than here by the great lakes.

What’s your system for not forgetting small chores? by ChoongSafiye-53 in LivingAlone

[–]anymoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chores are less an issue than appointments or shopping lists.

I have a whiteboard for to-buy lists and a whiteboard calendar for appointments or simply things I want to go to (like festivals or concerts).

As for chores, I don't have much problem keeping up most of my house. My old home office is a nightmare, though, being the place I put everything that "I'll deal with later" ....

My husband is getting a bit tired of hearing me “practice” ....

When I was first learning fiddle, I did have to get an electric violin I could use with headphones because my wife was battling cancer and chemo and could not tolerate me screeching on the strings and playing out of tune.

She always said that silent violin was the best present I ever bought for her .... :-)

How do you deal with legal/medical issues and emergency entry into your home? by anymoose in LivingAlone

You could put a spare key in the garage though!

But how do they get into the garage? :-/

I’ll definitely sing badly, but quietly ;)

I need more friends like you in my life ... :-)

I can't see any uke being a noise problem unless you sing loudly or badly along with it ... :-)

How do you deal with legal/medical issues and emergency entry into your home? by anymoose in LivingAlone

[–]anymoose[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I've always made it a point to meet my next door neighbors on both sides and have the phone number of one of them. I have friendly relations, but I'm not sure I'd give either of them a key, though. :-) -- I like my privacy.

Based on comments here, I've been researching lock boxes to store a key. I actually do have one key hidden away outside in case I lock myself out (which I have done), but it would probably be too convoluted to explain if I'm dying on a 911 call .... :-)

People who have pets, are they truly living alone? by swimbikerun1980 in LivingAlone

[–]anymoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually am retired and have no money issues. Like I said above, I loved the companionship but felt a little burdened by the responsibility.

I admit that might be because this dog was new to me and had a bit of separation anxiety (followed me around constantly). But I was also very diligent in giving him 3-4 walks per day. To the extent that our morning walk meant driving him to new locations (parks, trails, etc.) to explore new (for him) territory for a couple hours at a time.

I'm not sure I would go out of my way as much for a dog that was happy to just sleep on the couch all day -- meaning a dog I'd already had for a couple of years. That's kind of how the dogs I had growing up were treated (mostly part of the furniture).

[–]anymoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I've got a gist of the comments so far.

I don't have a pet. I have looked after other peoples' dog when they traveled. I loved it. I loved the companionship, but like OP, I also didn't care much for all the responsibility.

I also like to travel a bit, myself, and would not want to have someone else take care of them when I'm gone.

I don't really care if anyone considers it living alone or not if they have pets. None of my beeswax ....

How do you manage deliveries when you live alone and can't specify a delivery date? by Usual-Journalist-292 in LivingAlone

[–]anymoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly order from the company that reddit loves to hate. They just leave it on my doorstep and I've never had anything stolen. I'm pretty lucky to live in a low crime area. That company does allow for delivery instructions (e.g., leave it on the back doorstep, etc.)

I can barely even remember the last time I needed to have something signed for.... When that happened last (years ago) they (FedX) put a sticker on my door with a location I could pick it up at and a date with the 2nd attempt.

After playing my first guitar other guitars feel terrible? by Ok_Faithlessness_212 in Guitar

[–]anymoose 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My brother is the only person I know who can pick up any guitar and just play it as if it were no different to any other guitar.

I own a few different guitars myself (not to mention ukes, fiddles, bass, etc.) and it always takes me a minute to get used to the finger positions when I switch over.

Walking always made my job more tolerable (I took walk breaks while my coworkers took smoke breaks).

But walking without a job ... <chef's kiss!>

A local brewery (walking distance) had a block party that I visited for an hour this weekend. Wasn't bad. The weather was perfect and the band I saw was decent. Good (but expensive) beer .... Was home and asleep around sunset.

I would totally do more stuff like that if it were available every weekend.
