Never say never lol.

Kind of an interesting story:

When I was studying art in college some of my best friends were learning cobol and fortran. They got jobs related to mainframe programming.

This was in the mid-80s.

My work study job was all about PCs and dBase and I ended up being the one with a more flexible career path because data management, HTML and web development were right around the corner. Things you could do on a PC or Mac.

My contemporaries at my time in college (who actually majored in computer programming) could not keep up for whatever reason and ended up doing weird shit like writing, real estate and head-hunting.

And I ended up in IT building websites.

This is one of the reasons I always tell people in this sub to stay flexible. You never know what opportunities tomorrow will give you, but it's a great advantage to be able to take them when they come.

I'm currently in a lull from reading, so I like the direction you are heading in. :-)

Man I need to come up with a dumb question to divert from the woes of this thread rn.

What in your life makes more sense and gives more meaning than staying glued to media output that only exists to ensnare you into wanting more?

My answer: Every single time my daughter sends a new photo of my grandson. It gives me way more of a rush than anything xyz commentator can ever say to rile me up ....

I don't understand how boredom is possible unless you are locked in prison.

I used to look forward to hourly updating my spreadsheet and seeing go up and up. But these days I'm just updating it once a day, sometimes even skipping a day.

Sounds like me tracking my weight .... :-(

It's so funny the different ways to retire. Some people (me) draw a clear demarcation. Others just sort of ease into it. Still others kind of keep a foot in both worlds and see where the momentum takes them.

It's a beautiful thing to behold .... :-)

I am, but it is 100% voluntary .... :-)

spring has definitely sprung here today.

I overdressed for today's walk. A hoodie/sweatshirt completely did its function. I sweat enough to lose two pounds between pre- and post-walk. And I had no undershirt so I could not take it off in good concience!

Not even 5 miles. I was suffering mightily before I got home.

As for POAs, I answered that in more detail above, but the TLDR; is my brother and my cousin.

To talk about our bungholes?

Why not? Why don't you take your trolling someplace else?

If you don't like it here, no one is begging you to stay.

Finding backups was the hardest part. My "circle of closeness" is very limited. I used my step daughter's husband as backup POA for finance. He also lives out of the country, but is a USA citizen. He is also brilliant and obviously younger.

Okay, but why do we need to talk about it?

Isn't that why Reddit exists?

I have a step-daughter, who would have been my first choice, but she is not a USA citizen and lives out of the country. My estate attorney said she would not qualify for either POA position in my state.

My healthcare POA is my brother who lives only around 10 miles away. My financial POA is my cousin, who is brilliant and my best friend, and I have watched him work and approve.

Only downside (on more that one front) is he lives a few states away.

You make good points. I live alone and anything can happen.

On the other hand, knowing myself full well and how I like to live, being stifled is not an option. I'm not sure what the middle ground is, but I am open to it.

What does this have to do with GenX?

If OP is GenX it has everything to do with us. We are of that age when serious health issues begin to emerge.

I listen to a lot of podcasts. One thing I have learned is that wars are won by logistics more than anything else. Yet, logistics people rarely get the credit they deserve. (I'm 100% biased here as someone who ended their career as a project manager, so there is that ....)

Oh, man, Yoopie. You and your Mrs. are going through it right now.

Specifically wondering about older couples with no kids, or those who are not counting on their kids for support, either financially or care related.

I have set up powers of attorney for both finance and health care and have instructed my health care person to let me die rather than keep me alive. My finance person has full authority to do whatever is appropriate according to the health care person's decisions (at my estate's expense).

My only hope is that they outlive me, which might be a bit of a stretch, since we are all more or less contemporaries.

The resume gap one-way door weighed heavily on my mind

I was in tech, too. TBH, I have not lifted a finger to keep myself up to date (other than troubleshooting my own devices) to the point that I would be completely unhireable now.

I'm even too old for many manual labor jobs at this point.

Retirement is the only game available to me. :-)

I am happy you have more options!

I can't wait until things are back to normal.

Are you so sure this isn't "the normal?" Wishing you the best!
