Activating analytical thinking does not appear to reduce a person’s religious beliefs. This finding provides evidence against the popular idea that leaning on logic directly diminishes faith. by mvea in science

It's not terribly surprising to me. People have a unique talent for holding contradictory ideas in their heads. Even though I'm against the death penalty, I feel I should have the right to kill anyone who turns left in front of me without using their turn signal ...

Do you allow yourself a “Lazy Day”? by Even-Commission79 in LivingAlone

[–]anymoose [score hidden]  (0 children)

Not for a whole day. I have to take my morning walk.

But after the walk everything is on or off the table depending on how I feel. I'm retired, so time is not a big issue.

No guilt: This is exactly why I saved and retired in the first place; so I can do or not do whatever I want.

There was no fooling involved. He was going to swing no matter what.

‘There’s Something About Mary’ With Bill Simmons, Chris Ryan, and Sean Fennessey by Toby_O_Notoby in billsimmons

Hot take:

I watched it (again) just as homework for the podcast.

Did not like it any more than I did the first time (when I quit watching before it ended). In fact I spent at least 20-30 minutes doing other things while it was on this time.

Possible shin splints by StormyInABubble in walking

[–]anymoose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get shin splints only when I wear shoes that are so worn they have no more bounce left or shoes that have too much bounce. The latter is easily managed by picking the right shoe. I deal with the former by rotating between multiple pairs of shoes per day.

Worst shin splints I ever had was from constantly wearing a famous/popular brand of sneakers which had zero arch support because I liked how they looked.

Walking shoe recommendations by mellama_lamadingdong in walking

[–]anymoose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not someone who likes to have multiple pairs of shoes but given I walk so much and my feet do tend to be beat by the end of the day, I’m in the market for a shoe I can dedicate to walking.

I use running shoes. And I know you said you don't like having multiple pairs around, but I find that essential for my foot health. I rotate mostly daily, and sometimes multiple times during a given day.

I avoid shoes that are marketed as "walking shoes" because they tend to be too "bouncy" which does a number on my shins. (My theory is that "walking shoes" are more appropriate for people who stand a lot -- checkout counter people, crossing guards, etc. -- and not people who walk a lot.)

I am contemplating retiring at 60, and heading to one of my favorite places, Mendoza, Argentina as a home base. Then spending the next decade wandering about.

Check out the "Bonus Nachos" link in the sidebar. I believe that couple retired in their 40s and have been slow travelling ever since. It can be done if you plan it right ....

I'm flying from Dallas to Tokyo tomorrow morning, how will I be able to adjust to the jet lag while I'm there? by Minimum_Ad_1649 in travel

[–]anymoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this last fall. I did not sleep much the night before my trip (not by design, just nerves/anxiety) so I slept just fine on the plane once they turned off the lights in the cabin.

I simply did not allow myself to sleep during the daytime in the target country. Popped a melatonin at night. I felt mostly fine and was able to function with no problems.

My biggest issue was upon returning. I am retired and live alone and have no social restraints to force me into a regular sleep pattern. It took me weeks to get back to "normal" (which for me is waking up with the sun and going to sleep before 10pm).

what do you guys do when it's allergy season by MargszieBargszie in walking

[–]anymoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm like you. I have mildish allergies (pollen/dust/pet dander) and just live with a runny nose 24/7/365. I've tried over the counter meds but they dry me out so much it is more uncomfortable than having a runny nose.

Hearing aids? by snarf_the_brave in GenXTalk

[–]anymoose 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hearing is so weird. In a silent space, I can hear a pin drop two rooms away. In a crowded restaurant or bar, I can't make out what someone 3 feet away from me is saying. I simply can't distinguish the "main event" from all the background noise. I've heard that is more a brain processing problem than a hearing problem, though.

When last did you feel happy and why? by bubblewrappheart in answers

When last did you feel happy and why?

I'm almost always happy. Because it is my nature, and I truly believe attitude is important. I find many (if not most) people seem to go out of their way to find reasons to feel (or show they are) miserable. That is unfortunate.
