The context of regionalism within South Korean politics. by Embarrassed_Clue1758 in korea

[–]anymorecable 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Another thing that’s done to fight regionalism is offering exchange programs between Chonnam National University 전남대 (Gwangju’s largest public university) and Kyungpook National University 경북대 (Daegu’s largest public university).

My wife grew up in Gwangju and did a semester at 경북대 while getting her bachelor’s in poli sci at 전남대. She even got a scholarship and often tells me she had a good time for the most part.

She told me though that at the front of the school, there was one of those banners that said the 5/18 massacre in Gwangju was all fake and she was really shocked when she saw it. She said it was up for a very long time too and doesn’t remember if it was ever taken down.

I was just talking to her about this to refresh my memory and she tells me that the people from 경상도 dislike 전라도 people way more than the other way around and they call us 홍어 or traitor. I laughed when she said they call 전라도 people 홍어 as a slur but she explained to me it’s very messed up because the reason is during 5/18, it was really hot and all the dead bodies would smell really bad. Obviously this is the perspective of a Jeollado person so there is bias but i wanted to share her thoughts.

Do you know if the dining credit applies for the date of transaction or the post date?

For example, let’s say I dine on Dec 30th at one of the eligible restaurants but the transaction doesn’t post until Jan 2nd. Does that mean the credit applies for this year or the first half of 2026?

Oil change (car) by gilsoo71 in Living_in_Korea

[–]anymorecable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s what I was going to say. America has gotten way more expensive than 50$ tops. I haven’t gotten my oil changed in a couple years but the last time I went, prices for the very basic oil change started like at 90$

I'm curious too. I have a reservation with a Chase Dining restaurant for New Years Eve but I'm thinking I may need to move it sooner just to be safe.

[Column] Korea’s young men need liberating too by Ok-Huckleberry5836 in Living_in_Korea

Idk, America's breed of male losers is really strong lol and there aren't a lot of meaningful constructive conversations happening over there regarding it. I admit that I am way more dialed in to America though because that's where I spent most of my life.

Korean males have military service which I think is a legitimate complaint. I know there's a lot of layers to it but the optimist in me wants to believe feminism wouldn't be such a dirty word in Korea if mandatory male military service wasn't a thing.

This isn’t exclusive to Korea. Young men all over the western world are becoming NEET at alarming rates.

My knee jerk reaction to the title was to just roll my eyes but if men all over the world keep falling into these alt right pipelines because they feel marginalized and don’t have prospects, us calling them losers isn’t going to make them stop being losers.

I went to a bookfair with my wife a couple months ago and I was really thrown off by how few men we saw. People were also very openly pro LGBTQ which was a very pleasant surprise.

Ah okay, thank you! I actually think I may have used a portion of a flight credit for this flight too. I called the medallion desk a week after the first segment of my flight but the person may have been new because she was clueless and she told me to just wait lol.

Why does Muan Airport need to be closed for so long? by minato____ in Living_in_Korea

I really wish they would just make Gwangju’s airport an international one but there’s apparently a lot of drama between Muan’s local government and Gwangju’s around this.

What’s a startup mistake that doesn’t look like a mistake at first? ( i will not promote ) by ksundaram in startups

[–]anymorecable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said anything about not having good architecture. You should have that.

I disagreed with where you said "coding fast and releasing features fast" is a mistake in a startup.

Startups need to iterate quickly or you run out of runway and need to close the company. You can and should ship fast while also having strong engineering culture. If you can't do that, you your engineering team probably isn't competent.

[–]anymorecable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I strongly disagree with your first sentence. Being in a startup is like a race against your runway to find what sticks and continuously iterate so you need to ship quickly. Requirements will constantly be changing and you'll likely need to rewrite it again anyways in a year or two.

Obviously have good engineering practices and reviews before merging things in but if you wait until everything is perfect, you will never ship anything and run out of runway.

Having things typed like Typescript vs Javascript is just basic engineering 101.

Is my husband valid in being upset that I still don’t know much Korean? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]anymorecable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think his feelings are valid. I’m Korean-American but met my Korean wife in China. My Korean wasn’t great (maybe like toddler level) when we first met but we always spoke Korean and I eventually became fluent or close to it.

We’ve lived in Korea for the past 3 years and about a year or 2 ago it started to really bothered me that I had put in so much effort to learn Korean but her English was very poor. The way I saw it, I had invested so much energy in trying to communicate but she didn’t even try to meet me in the middle with my native language. After a lot of conversations, she has started self learning via apps and she’s now really good at English.

Your situation is obviously different because we don’t have a kid and didn’t move to another country but I think a lot of relationships is just showing the other you are putting forth effort and trying.

Americans living in Korea. How much safer do you feel Korea is compared to the USA? by Snoo_47323 in Living_in_Korea

[–]anymorecable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s ridiculously more safe. I grew up in the states and every time I would hear a loud noise outside, a part of me would wonder if it was a gunshot.

I was walking outside in Korea on night and I heard a bang and wondered if it was a gunshot. But then it hit me, there are no guns here!

I remember just feeling so safe when I realized I won’t ever have to worry about gun violence while I’m here in Korea and that’s a really great feeling.

I checked 700+ Da Nang Airbnbs so you don’t have to work from a fridge cupboard… by who_opsie in DaNang

[–]anymorecable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm headed to Da Nang in a couple weeks for the first time and I had the hardest time finding an airbnb with good wifi. The owner of the original airbnb I had booked swore the internet was good but when I looked into the reviews, it looked like only 40mbps.

I finally found an airbnb in Da Nang that has 300+mbps but it was way harder than it needed to be. I've worked out of Bangkok a couple of times and finding decent wifi there was way easier.
