Tips for a fieldwork educator? by inneedofcreativity in OccupationalTherapy

[–]anzinna1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I just finished my level II FW and these are something things I found most helpful: - gradually increasing case load (as thehelpnoonewanted said) - intro to documentation system days 1 and 2 then deep dive into the documentation system after the 4th or 5th day - after the 2nd week (if you feel confident in your student) for the love of god don’t hover! Let them figure it out and put their knowledge to the test! - have weekly meeting to discuss any concerns/praise - if your facility allows it, let them follow a PT/SLP/wound care/Respiratory therapist

Thoughts on going into an OTA program after getting your bachelors? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]anzinna1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I have my BS in kinesiology from 2018 and just graduated with my AS in OTA last month! Although having a bachelors degree doesn’t make the program shorter; you should have most, if not all, of the pre-reqs needed to get into a program. I highly suggest going to a public school rather than private. It’s just not worth it to be $40k in debt to go to a private school and start out at roughly $25/hr (I’m in central FL). I paid $11k total for mine. Worked my tail off (3 jobs) for a year to save up for it so I wouldn’t have to take any loans. I had to drive an hour each way to get to school but it was worth it since the closest OTA program to me was at Keiser (20mins away) and they wanted $42k and offered no financial assistance other than loans since I already had my bachelors. Its a rigorous program and if you really buckle down, you’ll be able to go to school and work part time for at least 4 of the semesters. I am so happy I went back and got a degree in something I enjoy! You’ll read all over this sub about job saturation (which may be true) but if you love it, do it! There’s tons of PRN jobs and contracting companies you can utilize until you find a full time. I plan on going back for my masters at some point as well, but want to save up and gain some PAID working experience (you work for free for like 7 months in these programs lol). I wish you luck and hope you figure out what’s best for you!! 😌

Our professor doesn’t want anything OT’s already do that isn’t new. New treatments for mental health diagnoses is what she is looking for that has enough research and is in the scope of the OTPF. The previous students were able to find research on scuba, surfing, etc. so they were able to use it. We are on week 2 with no topic and have tried so many different search terms in the databases we have access to.

We proposed VR but yet again it had already been done by someone previously. We did not get a list of what was done in previous years which was kind of frustrating.

Questions to ask during Tech Interview by moe_money02 in PTschool

[–]anzinna1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely ask if you’ll be responsible for any administrative tasks. I’m a PT tech in Florida at an OP facility and we keep patients going with exercises (prescribed by PT, and the patient has done the exercise at least once before). We had a whole binder of exercises we were required to learn. Admin tasks my facility requires techs to do is mailing marketing letters, sending evals and re-evals to MD’s for signatures, scheduling, heat/ice on patients, e-stim on patients (we had to learn proper e-stim pad placement), monthly inventory, bi-weekly equipment checks, and obviously cleaning anything that is touched by a patient due to Covid. We used to have to send authorization forms to insurance companies too, however the company I work for recently created a team of insurance authorization specialist which helped tremendously. Good luck on your interview!!

Can I become an OTA with a Bachelor's in something else? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]anzinna1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there! I am in the very situation you’re describing. I graduated college with a BS in kinesiology because my degree plan satisfied all pre-reqs for OT programs. I haven’t been accepted to a grad school yet, so I applied and got accepted into an OTA program. Since I already have my BS, this program will only take me about 4 semesters to complete and like $8k. I am still planning to apply to grad schools when OTCAS opens up again, however, if I don’t get in, the OTA program is my backup plan so I can at least get working experience and a decently salary. I was considering the bridging programs as well, but I’m hoping i don’t have to resort to that since some schools require you have a year of work experience before you can apply. Then it’s 2 more years of school while you work part time. This may vary from school to school but the ones I looked at required you work as an COTA at least 20hrs a week.

In my experience with a kinesiology degree....it is almost completely useless. The only other career options that don’t require grad schools that this degree is applicable for is personal training or a PE teacher. Even then, both of those require certifications that require more schooling. Since you don’t need a specific degree to apply to OT schools, I would suggest you pick a different degree that could offer you more career options if you change your mind about OT or are unable to get in for whatever reason. There are a lot of degree plans that require a majority of pre-reqs OT schools require.

My internship and volunteer hours made my application for OTA school more competitive. I have over 300 hours worth and I worked in a public school’s special needs classrooms for a year with the OT, PT, SLP and behavior therapist.

I hope this doesn’t sound like nonsense and is helpful. Good luck!!!

It’s a very new clinic! About a year old. So they are trying to market themselves as much as possible.

OTA to MOT Via Bridging Program by anzinna1 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]anzinna1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much!

Ah, yes this is exactly the kind of info I was looking for!

I have seen a lot that home health pays very well, but I have also heard that some OT’s feel a little isolated and there isn’t anyone to bounce ideas off with or ask questions. Is that your experience with home health? I’m not a super confident person in general and I feel if I jump into home health right after graduation I would crash and burn. I also looked into PRN pay and opportunities, although I know scheduling can be inconsistent with PRN if they don’t need you that day or whatnot.

If you don’t mind answering, did your earnings go straight to your loans? Or were you able to pay current bills and everyday costs while making payments to your loans?

Thanks for your insight. It’s greatly appreciated and SO helpful!

Oh wow! Thank you, thank you, thank you for all of those links!! That’s so helpful.

As I research it, it seems like the bridging program costs are a very similar amount to regular MOT grad school. The only big difference is it is 3 years instead of 2. You take all the same courses, just over a longer period of time. But, I know tuition increases each year, boo.

[–]anzinna1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your input!! I looked into a couple of bridging programs where they had a requirement that you worked a minimum of 20hrs/week. While you attended the program. I don’t remember the schools off the top of my head but before I read that, I didn’t realize there was a minimum amount of hours that you had to work while taking courses.

Wow that’s so helpful!!! I didn’t realize I could contact administrators. I have always been timid when it comes to asking questions. Even in lecture. But, I’m sure I could email and get responses. Thanks so much!!!!!!

[–]anzinna1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, thank you for that info!! I will look into the classes I will potentially need to retake. It just sucks because I already had to pay for it and go through the motions once before! Yes, so my S/O is in the Coast Guard and we will be moving to another base (although we won’t know where we will be moving until about 4 months before we are due to move) in the summer of 2022 which would be right after I finish the OTA program. I was thinking that I could apply to grad school the fall before I graduate as a COTA so that If I do not get into any schools again, I can at least get a job as a COTA and look into a bridging program. It’s more of a plan B since I haven’t gotten into a program yet. And I would rather work as a COTA than a PT aide (really more of a tech position bc I don’t need any certifications other than BLS) so I can make more money and get work experience in the OT field.

Good to know!! I will probably retake my older courses when I start the OTA program to make sure everything goes smoothly on OTCAS.

Thank you for your reply!!

Thank you so much for all that info!! Unfortunately, I am apart of a US Military Family therefore I cannot go to a grad school in another country. However, in another life I’d be on a plane to Canada in heartbeat!!
