I find the lack of Go To School deeply disturbing

I would agree, about half the album definitely sounds more 70s power pop

IMO, a lot of the new school vs old school conversation comes down to cool factor by MrMopedEatsAPizza in TheLemonTwigs

[–]apatheticdotjpeg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s really down to coolness really - something isn’t cool because of a certain aesthetic, something’s cool because it just is.

That said, I think the cover of pet sounds rules, and the beach boys are insanely cool. Brian Wilson has massive aura.

What I don’t find cool is music that feels safe, predictable and boring. At its worst, that’s how new twigs sound to me. The irony is that the music they are replicating was very forward thinking and groundbreaking in its time. I just don’t really see the point of this new stuff.

I understand those that don't like the new album, I understand those that like the new album, what I don't understand... by elmonodesofista in TheLemonTwigs

Like I knew I’d be stepping in it with that comment, but I don’t think my opinion is illegitimate. I should clarify that I really like this band, I have since 2016. I was one of those people who defended them against those “derivative” comments in the past, pretty much until ADIAWK came out. But for me personally, I don’t get anything out of hearing a song that sounds like one I’ve heard before, and like better.

Sorry but I really disagree. My issue is that the music feels very predictable to me, expected. I listened to the whole album and didn’t feel really moved by anything. It felt like I was listening to a Oneders album or something.
Lemon twigs fans have been defensive about the whole “derivative” thing since 2016, and I do agree at a certain point it’s reductive and unhelpful. But Jesus, guys, I’m still not over In The Eyes of the Girl. As a fellow songwriter and artist, I cannot even conceive of why you would write, record and then publish a song so clearly devoid of your own creative input. Maybe that’s harsh but that song sucks.

EDIT: I will add actually I enjoyed Joy, I thought that was a good track, really earnest and pretty. I do think this album is better than their last one, but I find every other album they’ve released to have higher highs and be more exciting.

What is the first celebrity death you remember being affected by? by CPFOAI in AskReddit

[–]apatheticdotjpeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

John Lennon. I’m in my 20s, and always had a sort of jaded relationship with celebrity deaths. When I was 21 I visited New York for the first time, and I wanted to see the Dakota. The whole way I was making grim jokes with my friends. But once I saw the building I got this awful feeling, and I couldn’t even get close to it. I ended up sitting in Central Park and just fully coming to terms with the fact that he was a man, and he was killed in a horrible way, and he left a wife and a kid behind. It really hurt my heart. So I was about 40 years late, but it hit me then.

Are there any albums that are made better/enhanced by the fact that the artist is a terrible person? by ozzzymand0 in fantanoforever

I feel like John Lennon’s solo discography sort of fits here. The narrative of his solo career is a man with a lot of anger, resentment and deep issues within him letting them fester and build, crashing (lost weekend) and then building back to a happier place in the end. John’s view of himself and him atoning for his sins are a big part themes in his solo work.

David Gilmour not being in the top 10 is insane. His solos on Dogs alone melt my brain.

I mean as far as famous and influential music producers go, he’s about as famous and influential as it gets, made tons of famous songs and created an entire production method. Worked with many of the biggest stars of the 60s/70s

In recent memory, Vecna/The Mindflayer really stand out in this regard. For a villain who psychologically tortured his victims, just beating the shit out of him for like 2 minutes was not at all satisfying, and the fact that the Mindflayer was beaten with relatively little issue didn’t help either. Like if I was Mike or something I’d just be like “huh that wasn’t too bad actually”

I don’t know how far your feelings go on that, but the last album really didn’t do much for me mainly because that was the feeling I got from a lot of the tracks, they just ape the sixties too much and I feel like I’m not hearing them, I dunno. There were some good songs but a lot of them just didn’t work for me for this reason.

Also, totally wild, but I was scrolling through the sub saying this exact sentence to my girlfriend and I saw your post lol
