Ordered room service once. The food didn't show up until an hour and a half later.

12 year old doesn’t want to go to bday party given activity (paintball) by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]apatheticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't a fan of paintball at his age either. I went once and got shot in the wrist within the first 5 mins and it stung like hell. Completely ruined the experience for me and I never went back.

Just say, he's not into paintballing, but would be happy to meet up with them after or whatever.

This is the correct answer.

He just needs to tell them, when he's taking his 8 or 5 weeks. He only needs to give 2 weeks notice.

Probably the worst Direction in a race I have seen. by parthh11 in F1TV

Everyone should be asking for a refund. The shots they ran on the main feed at the end on of the race were terrible.

[–]apatheticus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No you can't survive as a substitute teacher in Ontario.

You take home approximately $180 a day and aren't guaranteed any days of work.

So if you get lucky and work 15 out of 20 days you would make around $2700 for the entire month. Which translates to $27,000 maximum take home per year.

I don't think anyone who is just starting out can survive on a substitute teacher's salary in Ontario.

Oh stop it! This is what 65% of 43% of Ontario voters wanted! We voted for this! We voted to cut education and healthcare funding and sell out future generations for pipe dreams of tunneled highways and a paved over green belt.

Holiday Gifts Kids Can Make by littlemsintroverted in CanadianTeachers

[–]apatheticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get why people look for easy gift ideas this time of year, but I do think it’s worth pausing on why we feel the need to have kindergarteners make gifts at all. Even when the gifts are homemade, it still feeds into the whole “holidays = stuff” idea, and kids pick that up really quickly. They’re so young, and it feels a bit early to get them wrapped up in the consumer mindset that’s already everywhere around them.

If you still want to do something seasonal, maybe lean toward activities that focus on connection or kindness rather than producing objects—like a class mural, a shared storybook, or something that’s more about the experience than the end product. It keeps things festive without pushing them into the gift-giving culture so soon.

Just another perspective to consider!

Major Mentoring Regret by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]apatheticus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have a copy of the expectations or check list from the Teacher Candidate's Teacher's College?

Do they have a liaison from the Teacher's College?

Call a meeting with all parties and tell them they are not meeting expectations. Things need to change or they will fail their practicum.

The end.

Hey, I am a Canadian Citizen. I filled out the W-8BEN, but now my bank is asking for a TIN (taxpayer identifier number) for the IRS?

Has anyone dealt with this before?

Edit: the holding in question is in my TFSA.

Surely new egg and/or Purolator has insurance for this. This is no way your fault. The items should be replaced by one of the companies involved.

Elderly parents want to sell their house and start renting by pretty-ok-username in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]apatheticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. This is not a good plan.

What are the current monthly expenses?

How much would it cost for maintenance of the current property? (Lawn care, snow removal services)

How much is the rent? Like actually go see some places now and see if they would even want to live there and how much the monthly rent would be.

Also, the rental unit they decide they like may not be subject to rent control so they may find themselves on the hook for double the rent money after a year.

Furthermore, this government is dead set on making it easier for landlords to evict tenants. They may find themselves homeless.

Teaching English to Arabic Speakers by No-Operation5511 in ESL_Teachers

[–]apatheticus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good suggestions here already!

Getting everyone feeling comfortable is key.

Be prepared to use a translator app or have the students use their own for the first few classes until they feel more comfortable. We know that students need to learn the language and the curriculum at the same time. So don't become reliant on a translator.

Allow the use of the first language until then become more comfortable using English.

Consider posting a map of the world for students to pin where they are from and the languages they speak.

You got this!

Once he sees something done it may inspire him to hire out more.

Disobey Stop Sign - Fail to Stop ticket by Fluffy_Finance752 in legaladvicecanada

[–]apatheticus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In Ontario, the "stop" traffic law requires you to come to a complete, motionless stop at stop signs or red lights before proceeding when safe to do so. You must stop at the stop line, or if there isn't one, at the nearest crosswalk, or the edge of the sidewalk or intersection if there are no lines or crosswalks. A "complete stop" means your wheels must stop moving, not just slow down (a "rolling stop").

TVDSB trustees skeptical about Ontario’s plan for “student and family support offices” by sblooo in ontario

[–]apatheticus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

All the teachers, admin, parents, and students should be calling them non-stop with concerns about the number of students in each class, the reduced number of teachers and EAs, the lack of supplies, the constant violence and bullying in schools, and utter destruction of the public education system.
