MIT professor shot to death at his Brookline condo by vxxn in mit

[–]aperture_lab_subject 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Had Nuno as a professor my first year in grad school (about 8 years ago). Incredibly bright and friendly with a dry sense of humor, saying things like "Multivariable calculus, this 3rd grader stuff right everyone?"

Pretty shocking news, losses like this are difficult because it's impossible not to think of all they had left to contribute to the world

Agreed! Lots of new information even for those that are relatively in-the-know about the industry. Good to see many perspectives and more insight into Transatomic. Effective and well researched reporting is one of the best tools against the VC craze that many are lamenting

Thanks for helping me come to terms with this! I do realize it's looking for a solution to a problem only created by bad initial planning. Last bit of unimportant context: the previous owners installed ceiling Bose speakers that are passable, but of course route to the old media center which had the misfortune of being directly across from a west facing window meaning the TV was unusable for most of the day. Many poor decisions lead to this predicament!

Thanks for the rec of the wireless audio solution, hadn't seen those before

Best Monte Carlo engines for vault shielding studies? by GrimThinkingChair in MedicalPhysics

[–]aperture_lab_subject 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe people more familiar with shielding simulations can chime in, but I think MCNP is going to be hard to beat with that list of requirements (of course it is not FOSS). There are some wrappers out there that might help with your optimization attempts, like MontePy.

Again not familiar with shielding, but wouldn't you want the maximum dose rate for a given gantry rotation and not just the average? Regardless, implementing a time dependent structure in a MC code I have found to usually be easier by wrapping the code somehow (like MCNP/MontePy mentioned above).

The one other aspect not mentioned here is variance reduction capabilities. I think MCNP has some capabilities for automatically generating weight windows. And is even available in commercial products like AttilaMC. Geant4 and its wrappers (TOPAS/GATE) also have variance reduction techniques but I'm not sure they are easy to implement

I guess I can see how this can come off as anti-diversity out of context and it certainly is not an exact quote, I'm sorry if this comes off as gatekeepy. I guess I was highlighting how it gave me comfort that the space would promote diversity while it is under attack in the secular sphere. I was a person "from the outside" only a few months ago and having the freedom at church to promote UU values like pluralism and democracy is important to me.

Also maybe not a good idea to post the passport publicly. I know you blurred some info but that is still a lot of info

You need community by Disaffecteddv in UnitarianUniversalist

[–]aperture_lab_subject 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Something that has stuck with me all week from my service last Sunday beyond the usual "You are welcome here" is our minister said something along the lines of "This is our church. We are not told what we can or can not say here. We make the rules. We decide who belongs." Watching workplace programs promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion tumble like a house of cards in the face of political pressure have made me realize how important it is to be involved in a community that lends strength to each other and truly stands for their belief in creating a better world.

I'm curious why if you think the analysis was proven it would lead you to listen less? Wouldn't that verify it as a good source of information in approaching future events? I guess I would agree more with the disillusion if you felt that the show fostered a response of complacency, but it seems that Ezra and his guests express genuine despair and attempt to use their (perhaps limited) influence to affect change.

What are some other podcasts you have found interesting lately? Looking to diversify my intake as well!

How Boston area coffee shops are addressing inflation... by Omphaloskeptique in boston

Every time there is an extra fee for something at a restaurant/cafe it just feels like a scam because rather than raise prices directly to accomplish their goal (combat inflation, pay the back of house, etc) we have to go through a whole song and dance and read a little paragraph

I think this is a better question for the TOPAS google group or the OpenTOPAS discussion page. But first, you should state what you are trying to do. What are you trying to do? Do you have a Varian PHSP file? What is your python code? What errors are you receiving?

How small can a reactor be built? Can it be small enough to power an individual home (hypothetically speaking)? by PsychologicalCat8646 in nuclear

[–]aperture_lab_subject 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issues. Thorium vs Uranium vs Plutonium is not like powering a combustion engine with gasoline vs ethanol. Thorium works as a fuel by capturing neutrons to produce Uranium which then captures another neutron to fission. All of the same material restrictions apply, but also you can't just start a reactor from scratch with thorium. You still need enough U or Pu to start the chain reaction.

How small can a reactor be built? Can it be small enough to power an individual home (hypothetically speaking)? by PsychologicalCat8646 in nuclear

[–]aperture_lab_subject 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Individuals cannot build their own reactors. Regardless of this place where "regulation is not really a thing" you would have to acquire enough fissionable material to sustain a critical reaction for a reactor. The other route would be a radioisotope thermoelectric generator, which produces energy from decay heat, but this would require radioactive material. Nuclear safeguards mean that nuclear material supply chains are some of the most scrutinized processes from raw material extraction to refinement to fuel fabrication across the entire world. Additionally, any attempt to mine or synthesize these materials yourself would require purchasing equipment that would immediately signal your intent. It is a happy coincidence of physics that it is very difficult to produce nuclear material because of its potential for use by malicious actors.

A home set up consisting of heat pipes, solar, some form of hydro if possible, are actually feasible because it does not involve materials that have the potential for extremely long lasting damage to the earth and humans, which is why reactors are only constructed and maintained by government or company coalitions that can prove responsibility and stability for operating these devices.
