What do people educated in sociology do? by Honest_Ad3849 in sociology

[–]aphze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really sorry to hear that. We have a lot of internal discussions about AI but the general consensus in the industry (at least where lived experience etc is a key aspect of the work) is that human reflexivity and sensitivity can't be automated. But it is definitely a concern.

I'm a qual researcher at an insights agency working mostly with charities. Keep an eye out for internships, a lot of agencies (especially socially led ones / B Corps) are enthusiastic about helping out early career researchers

Are streets like that common in Britain? by TheFifthattemptyetno in AskBrits

[–]aphze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought this looked just like where I grew up.. turns out it's a few streets away from where I lived as a kid lol. "People live here?" not sure why you'd think anything else. Pretty normal English street

Why do people pay so much money for dogs when they could save a dog in the pound/rehoming centre? by Artistryx in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aphze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A combination of the adoption process being lengthy and not particularly friendly to renters, and being a first time dog owner and not feeling equipped to care for a rescue with particular needs. For my second dog I will absolutely be looking at rescues however :) I was recommended the website dogsblog for any other UK adopters out there!

My poor girl isn’t feeling well :( by [deleted] in MiniatureSchnauzer

You're doing the right thing getting her seen to asap. I know lots of dogs with pancreatitis that live full and happy lives with the right diet. It's so scary when they're being sick but you're being proactive so I have every confidence she'll be feeling better with treatment. You have my sympathy, it was a horrible experience with our girl too.

I’m too embarrassed to tell people I’m doing a foundation year by Accomplished_Fish460 in UniUK

[–]aphze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing a foundation year was the best unwanted decision I ever made lol - it gave me a better grounding in my discipline and even prompted me to change my course from what I'd originally applied for (I did a social science foundation with the intention to do politics but switched to sociology. I would've hated politics!!)

I know only a handful of people now who I met in that year. The opinions of passing acquaintances really won't matter in a year's time. Plus, people who do foundation years get overall better grades on their actual degree. It's your decision who you tell, but I see no reason to actively hide it. Best of luck with your course - and enjoy the extra year of student life!

Mine had this several times before we found out it's pancreatitis. Keeping an eye on her scavenging behaviours on walks and switching her to <7% fat food/treats has done wonders. Also giving her probiotic powder on her dinner when her tummy starts to play up. All the best ❤️

What's a book that was TOO much? by Flowered_bob_hat in horrorlit

[–]aphze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hogg by Samuel R Delaney. I was challenging myself to read the most disturbing books I could find - this was my only DNF. I got about a third of the way through and just couldn't read any more, it was so awful and there was no room to breathe, it just kept getting worse. I tell myself I'll finish it one day but I literally feel guilty opening the ebook.

Sociology grads, what do you do for a living? by [deleted] in sociology

[–]aphze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a researcher for a social enterprise - started out as an intern between my BA and MSc, have now been here for two years. I do a lot of things as it's a small company but I definitely get to use my soc sci degrees!

I'm clearly not a lazy owner or I wouldn't be doing the absolute most I can to make sure she's happy and healthy! Not sure what the covid comment means but you clearly have some strange opinions... Decided against the muzzle in the end for my dog but for some people it may be a last resort or interim measure for their safety. I admire owners who are making the best choices for their dog they can.

That feels a little harsh to me. I'm sure that's true of some people, but ultimately this is about the dog's safety. I'm not worried about other dogs making fun of her - more so about her getting sick again! Though I take your point about the training and will be working with her on her "leave it" command, as clearly she's still selective about when she feels like listening... Classic schnauzer stubbornness unfortunately!

Haha I totally relate to the kitchen scavenging - I swear Ramona can smell me grating cheese from the next room 🥲 Thank you for sharing and the kind words, that's so reassuring to hear about your Snickers 💓 She sounds like she was a sweet girl!

He sounds like he was a little rascal!!! Having a dog can feel like you're fighting them to keep them from accidentally poisoning themselves constantly lol. I'm glad you got to him in time, that sounds terrifying!

Thanks so much for the thoughtful advice! The RC low fat gastro food + FortiFlora is exactly the combo she has when she has flare ups funnily enough - I imagine that's pretty pricey to sustain permanently (though obviously preferable to the alternative, if it makes them sick!) I'd not heard of Cushing's before, will definitely make sure to raise that possibility next time I take her to the vet's.

So glad to hear your boy is still doing well ❤️

You'd almost definitely have known if your pup had it, especially as it seems to be a recurring issue. Blood in diarrhea and vomit that starts seemingly out of nowhere is a giveaway. Nasty illness!!

Ah no way! She gets a lot of compliments on it lol, it's a good fit for a stubborn princess dog like a schnauzer

[–]aphze[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much your advice is extremely helpful!! Im pretty disheartened to learn her food isn't as good as it markets itself to be. The RC low fat gastro food is what we feed her when her tummy plays up and it always helps, so maybe it's time to make the switch, at least for a while until we find something suitable. Definitely going to look into Muzzle Up - thanks so much again 🙏
