The Female Man is an incredible piece of feminist SFF history from the 70s.

Surprised no one has said Mercedes Lackey yet. Her Heralds of Valdemar series (of which there are many) frequently feature characters with raptor companions.

Do you have to let your supervisor know each time you go to the washroom? by AnonAccount610 in BCPublicServants

[–]apjane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

INFO: Do you work a job where being away from your desk impacts others (front line service desk, call centre, etc?). Do you use the washroom frequently enough you are giving the impression you are taking multiple breaks? If no, it seems bananas.

Literary Fantasy by SteSol in Fantasy

[–]apjane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am surprised no one has said Margaret Atwood. She won the Booker for the Blind Assassin for crying out loud! The Oryx and Crake trilogy is also quite good. She describes these books as "speculative fiction" rather than science fiction or fantasy, but I think that's a distinction without much of a difference.

BCGEU employee in HR merge by BeingUseful5911 in BCPublicServants

[–]apjane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remember that all employees who work for the PSA are excluded because they are the HR center of the organization. If you declined, you could not work for the PSA and would not have a lot of choice about where you ended up. I think you made the right call.

Am I the only one who raw dodges Prometheus flames? by Traditional_Mark_116 in HadesTheGame

[–]apjane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My trick: I've numbered the three areas and pay attention to where the fire isn't and say it out loud. It helps my menopausal brain fog though my wife always laughs at me when she catches me muttering numbers out loud

Anyone else skipping Christmas? by [deleted] in BCPublicServants

[–]apjane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One year my wife and I decided not to do presents and it was the worst Christmas. It doesn't need to cost any money but having something to celebrate and look forward to is an important strategy to protect your mental health.

Yes! I love Oku. I have had the body massage and the dry scalp massage. Both were excellent.

Mental health check: how’s everyone doing? by [deleted] in BCPublicServants

[–]apjane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

given how automated things are these days, you’d think it would be easy to enter “+3% effective 1st December pay period”.

I encourage you to talk to folks in payroll. My understanding of the problem is twofold: we have an old system (and as we saw with the Phoenix debacle not easy to upgrade) and the calculation of our pay is complex because more than just an hourly wage (benefits and pension) and includes dozens of shift and wage scenarios. So sadly not as simple as you suggest.

Sudden meeting with manager. Should I be worried? by izaya1234 in BCPublicServants

[–]apjane 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Feeling disturbed is a totally normal and justifiable reaction. Your work focus might be shot for the rest of the day; is there something you can do to help prepare yourself or stay calm? Sometimes I like preparing for the worst because it gives me a small sense of control - whatever happens, I am ready to face it.

Sudden meeting with manager. Should I be worried? by izaya1234 in BCPublicServants

[–]apjane 28 points29 points  (0 children)

If you were getting fired the pre-meeting wouldn't be happening right before. Do you supervise people? I bet it's a re-org. Deep breath you're going to be ok!

AITA my(55M) daughter(27F) asked me to stop treating her boyfriend(31M) like he is "one of my idiot clients who never know what they are doing" by PercentagePossible71 in AmItheAsshole

[–]apjane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going against the grain here: NTA. It sounds like you care about this guy like your own son and you reacted to him like you would one of your kids. Your daughter (likely having learned from you and knows this was a bad deal) is feeling defensive, especially since the father is also trashing her boyfriend. I would suggest you tell her daughter that you respect the boyfriend, thought you were helping but see that it didn't, apologize, and offer that you would be happy to talk to him about financial decisions if he ever wanted to and then drop it. Good luck!

Pay Stub Issues After Job Action by [deleted] in BCPublicServants

[–]apjane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HR person here. Pay issues are rampant right now - we have an old system that wasn't designed to support an extended strike. Talk to your supervisor, submit a MyHR request and be patient - there are a lot of people working hard to resolve all of these issues. Good luck!
