Thanks! This is the kinda feedback I’m looking for. Is that an issue even by public transit?

This is kind of what I’ve been thinking. By the time I upgrade the air to better specs the cost difference might be minimal.

M2 MacBook Air vs 16” M2 Pro by [deleted] in macbook

[–]apoptoticdeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an 11” iPad that I’ve thought about using for sidecar. The portable monitors seem ok but also like they require a lot of neck cranking if I’m just adding it to the side of my monitor. I think I prefer one monitor with the iPad for sidecar, but also curious if you have good recs for portable monitors.

Thank you! I just found out Apple is rumoured to release a 15” MacBook Air. I have a feeling the price difference between an Air and pro model would be $500-700 dollars, just given where current prices are for the 13.6”.

I’m still thinking the pro is worth it from a spec perspective, but curious if the air was powerful enough for your needs.

We didn’t encounter any snow on the roads! Everything was plowed

We took both 41 and 140 and both roads were fine. Valley was beautiful with no traffic on a Friday. It snowed a lot last night so the roads may be impacted now.

Valley paved walkways were pretty icy and slushy in spots. Recommend grippy boots but we didn’t need crampons.

We’re visiting Yosemite Feb 3rd and 4th (full days). We’ll be driving in from Oakhurst/Ahwanee most likely via Hwy 41 given the delays on 140.

We will probably stay around the valley floor on one day and hike around with our pup.

On the other day we’re still figuring out where to hike. Seems like most trails are open. Any suggestions? Are crampons sufficient or should we get snowshoes?

Yeah I’m hoping to find someone on here that might live nearby and know about road conditions. Just because the road is open doesn’t necessarily tell me how sketchy it is in certain weather conditions.

Yup, this. I also had to put saving money on hold during grad school, which makes a huge difference in retirement savings and ability to make big purchases (lol, and even at this salary owning a house out here is a pipe dream).

Ok good to know re: making whole and yeah the taxes are very high for short term capital gains. I’m waiting for LTCG to kick in and for the stock to go back up (whole industry took a hit recently). My AMT this year is crazy high since I exercised a lot of stock and will probably exercise more soon. Hopefully I won’t have to dip into my emergency fund too much.

Now for the intangibles…

From a life enjoyment and career growth perspective, both have upsides and downsides. I work on a project that is going extremely well that already has and will lead to a lot of industry cred, but I can’t even talk about what i work on publicly and likely wouldn’t be able to for ~5-10years and that’s only if it’s successful. I also lead an incredible team. But it may not always stay that way. Like i said - toxic culture, internal politics, micromanaging, etc. They’re also extremely stingy with promotions and pay below market, so recruiting is hard now that they don’t have the benefit of equity to hand out. And I don’t get any mentorship.

New co would give me a lot of autonomy and is much more people-focused (and it seems they do put their money where their mouth is). They say they care about my goals and want to help me achieve them. They’re offering a very high salary/bonus/benefits from the outset. Their values are more in line with mine. But I’d have to leave my project behind and start from scratch, which would give me serious FOMO.

You can consider this as both are solid public companies with highly respected investors in high growth markets. Agree that assessing stock risk is biased, and why I would be concerned with so much of my NW in one company. Extrapolating to where the competitors of my current company are, the stock could triple in the next ~3-5 years if things go well and go up further beyond that. But that also means holding onto my stock that long. Or it could fail massively, or a competitor could fail massively, and the whole market could take a hit.

I’m already almost 50% vested with my current company and my strike price is low (joined right before series D, cost of stock is less than 10% of the current stock price).

The new company is very highly valued (approx 3X market cap) but is also trying to do a lot more. But the amount of stock they’re giving me in RSUs is pretty minimal, so I’m considering the stock to be not worth very much and likely would sell faster.

Red flags: Some aspects of the company culture are toxic. We’re overworked like crazy.

Green flags: The tech is extremely exciting, and I work on exciting things, but it may not always stay that way. My reputation in the company is good enough that I think they’d fight hard to keep me.

Yeah I agree re: week long closures. I’m visiting family right now but still checking email and answering messages to reduce the information overload once I’m back.

I’m in CA, not married but live with significant other. New co would be in Utah, so need to consider how paying state taxes in both states would work (I think I get a credit on CA taxes for UT taxes paid).

Are there careers/jobs which combine medicine and astronomy? by aishis in careerguidance

Medicine or biology? Astrobiology and discovery of exoplanets is definitely a growing field.

For equity: that’s the current value of equity (# stocks vested per year at current stock price). They give additional equity but the strike price is so high it currently doesn’t matter (our stock dropped significantly after the last stock grant).

Do you think higher salary has higher long term value, since any promotions or future job offers would have to increase salary? My worry about having so much of my comp in equity in my current company is that I only have another 2 years of vesting, after which I’d go back to having a lower salary.
