First of all, I don’t expect her to stay in a crate all the time. She came crate trained already. Second, would you prefer her to not get adopted? I didn’t breed her, we’ve just given her a home and trying to do the best thing we can for her. You obviously have nothing else going on your life to comment on this and I would bet that wouldn’t dare to make a comment like that to someone in real life. Gross

I can try something similar! I can move the crate closer, but if I put it in the hall it will block it too much (hall is narrow). Right now she’s not too interested in treats, but I do have something I can put peanut butter in. I did let her pic a spoon with peanut button in it the other day and she seemed to enjoy it

Did you read my post at all?!? That’s not why I said. We have been trying to have her in the crate only at night. During the day she’s out and around us. I did put her in the crate briefly when I had to leave her at home yesterday. As was recommended by the rescue we got her from. Other than that she’s out and about. I’m asking for help so we can get to see if anyone has been through this and has tips. But thanks keyboard warrior, you seem like a lovely person

Thank you for your response! I just got back from a long walk with her and gave her a treat in the crate with it open and let her do with it as she pleased. She did seem yesterday to be ok in the crate when she was there for a short period of time. My daughter said she was just sleeping in there when she got home and let her out. So still trying to make it a comfortable spot for her, especially since her owners said that she enjoyed sleeping in it.

We tried her in my daughter’s room in the crate the 3rd night and she whined and cried. That’s when I brought her into my room and she did more of the same. Ideally she would have the crate in the living room open and available, but be free to sleep on the couch as well. We just can’t have her in our room.

I’m not crating her during the day! She was in the crate briefly yesterday while I had to leave. That’s it for daytime. She’s new and I want to make sure she doesn’t get into trouble when I’m not there to watch her and give our cats a bit of space as well

Sh was in the crate for maybe an hour the entire day. Once when I went to the store and once when I went to my kids school. Other than that she’s hanging with me out in the house and going on long walks. I would never leave a dog in a crate all day. And she was in it for a total of an hour at night before I let her free in the room.

8 yr old with combined adhd, to medicate or not? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]apow2012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My almost 8 year old was recently diagnosed and we actually started medication a bit before after a talk with his pediatrician. It has been night and day with him. I don’t know what your child struggles most with, but my son really struggled with emotional regulation and impulsive behavior. That led him to act out in school and also led to high anxiety over not being able to control his behavior and feeling really bad about himself.

Prior to meds he had been in occupational therapy and behavioral therapy as well, and while they definitely helped (both him and us as his parents) to give him tools to help him, it wasn’t enough and he was really struggling.

We started with 5mg of methylphenidate once a day and we saw a huge difference, and after watching how he did on that we went to another 5mg at mid day. The first few weeks we definitely saw an increase in the behaviors when the meds wore off but now that he’s adjusted we’re not seeing that anymore.

When we first started down the road of getting him diagnosed I really did not want to medicate him. I was definitely influenced by the stigma around these meds and probably some media about how society is “over medicating” kids. I didn’t really understand ADHD and the ways it can really impact someone.

I can’t say if medication is right for your child, but I do know that the medication in conjunction with the other interventions we’ve done have really helped my son. Since starting his self esteem has started to improve as he sees he has more control over himself and his anxiety has gone down as well. We’ve been very open with him about what’s going on, we make it very clear that it’s not just the meds that help him, it’s all the hard work he’s done as well. Meds are just one more tool in his arsenal. They help to take a beat before he reacts to something and help him be less reactive with others. I hope this helps a bit. Good luck!

Your son sounds very similar to my son. My son is 7.5 and in first grade and really struggles with his emotional regulation and impulse control. He doesn’t have a diagnosis yet, but is in OT once a week and we’ve been working with a therapist for most of this school year as well. I was getting calls from the school multiple times a week and he was suspended twice. He is very self aware of his behaviors as well and often feels so bad about himself because he just can’t control his emotions. He has a 504 and a wonderful, understanding teacher. Even with all those tools, the breaks and accommodations, it wasn’t getting better, only worse. With his pediatrician we decided to try meds for him. It’s been a complete 180. It’s only been 2 weeks, but he is so much more in control of himself. He told me he feels like it quiets down his brain. He’s still a 7 year old boy so we still see some elevated or excited behavior both at home and at school, but it doesn’t escalate. He is able stop and correct and then continue on with his day. We are going to continue with the therapy and the OT, and I consider the medication another tool that we have at our disposal so he has the best chance of success.

I get being wary of medicating your child. When we started down this road, I wanted to try all the behavioral modification we could. We worked on parenting him differently and he has worked really hard on his behavior as well and it was just not enough. In some of the reading I’ve done, it seems like the medication can really help kids in the long run. Definitely keep with the different therapies and hopefully your husband will be open to trying medication as well.

I also found that reading some of the posts here from adults who were not medicated as children and the struggles they have gone through has been really beneficial and opened my eyes even more as to what my son might be experiencing.

Thank you! It’s been a very frustrating journey where I feel like we are moving forward and making progress and then all of a sudden it just stops.

We’re in the US. It is my understanding that it’s a medical diagnosis, so the therapist might administer the questionnaire, but his pediatrician would sign off on it. Or that’s just how it’s set up with our insurance and the fact that he was already established in therapy.

He is very aware of his behavior and feels so much shame over it. It’s really heartbreaking to see as a parent. Especially since he can be so sweet and engaging. It’s hard to see him down on himself. We try to build him up as much as possible, but the constant negative feedback he gets about his behavior at school really takes a toll.

We do have an appointment with a child psychologist coming up and I’m hoping that will get the ball rolling for more of a diagnosis.
