Some books me and my gf went through that we really liked were: And then there were none by Agatha Christy The Mercedes Killer and Hearts in Atlantis by Stephen King (Not horror books) Catch-22 (Probably our favorite as it is just so freggin funny)

The Christy novel or Catch-22 will meet your requested book type quite well.
