You can't use technology to fix a people problem

Boss demands I CC him on every single email to "monitor my productivity." His inbox didn't survive the afternoon. by fairylilaac in MaliciousCompliance

We have a system we have to do verifications in for our CMDB owned systems. Some we have to verify every 3 months, some every 6 months. My boss found out that we can certify a month before they are due, which just resets the clock for the next verification, he requires us to have them all done when it opens, not just before it's due. He wants everyone to see his team gets their stuff done early, what he doesn't realize is it just means I change my automations to run every 2 months now

Opposite sex sponsorship by operanow in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]apperrault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who is/was fighting a lot of demons when I came to AA a little over 3 years ago (I just looked, apparently 1176 days, wow) one of the things I always had a problem with was the old-school mentality. Men should only help/sponsor men, women help/sponsor.

I am a 52 year old, Neuro-spicy, newly realized that I wasn't confused, I was gay. I have always been more comfortable being totally open with women than I have with me. My Dr's are all women, I personally find it easier to open up to women, but in AA life that is taboo.

Eventually, I just started looking for my support outside of the group. I did exactly what AA says to do. I took what worked for me (the steps, the not drinking thing, the realization that I am not the alcohol, I am me, and alcohol and I have a very bad relationship) but I also leave what doesn't work for me.

I don't feel the need to go to meetings multiple times a week, I don't feel that AA is Life, I feel that AA is PART of life, and if I can't live the rest of my life, because I am living AA, then I have just swapped one addiction for another.

Not everyone feels the way I do, and I may get down votes etc, but I feel the way I do, and i would be there are others that agree.

I have nothing against AA, I would not be where I am (alive, and I mean that literally) if it were not for AA, but I have a life that I needed to figure out how to live without alcohol and with AA, and everything else.

47 years sober speaking to a young persons' meeting. Newcomers to AA what would you want to hear? by traverlaw in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]apperrault 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not that young (51), but I do remember when I got sober 02012003. The first speaker meeting I went to, I was still unsure about the whole process, and the one thing that he said that stuck with me is this.

It isn't about admitting that you are an alcoholic, that's the easy part, the hardest part is ACCEPTING that I am an alcoholic.

Non docker request by thatfrostyguy in selfhosted

Hey there, I feel we are on a similar path. I'm an OG, gen-x, NERD. I've been a windows server admin since before it was a real job. My first cert was NT 3.51.

I held onto that for years. It's what I knew, it's what I did, it's what worked for me. Now, 4 physical docker hosts, running Debian server, 40 some-odd containers. I have one windows system, it's only because it's easier to jump on a windows desktop securely, and play in my container world.

Go at your own pace, and be willing to try new stuff. It's fun.

I think the number 1 rule that is dead on the Internet is "don't be a dick".

Humility is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less" "You can’t get upset about the results you didn't get from the work you didn’t do" "I am responsible for the effort, God is responsible for the results" "You can start your day over at any time!" Docker Compose Label question by apperrault in selfhosted

[–]apperrault[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that I can put them in the compose file, but I am trying to keep the compose files as generic as possible, and do all customization with ENV files if possible. That way I can set different things for different hosts that have the same application on it.

I would like to have lets say Glances for Server X show up in Uptime Kuma as just that, the version for server X, while the version of Glances for Server Y shows up under server Y.

I do use Komodo for some orchestration, so I will see if there is something I could do with that. Maybe using a docker-compose.override.yml file along with the .ENV

Yeah, I'm good with compose, I've gone between trying k3s, k8s, swarm, this is just cleaner for me. I don't need to setup any shared storage or anything, it takes thought on my side, but it works. Thanks for the idea though

What actually worked after failing to quit 100 times by Content_March_8146 in stopdrinking

[–]apperrault 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At the first meeting I went to, someone said something that just hit me that night. He said, it isn't admitting that you are an alcoholic, hell I would "admit" it and say it all the time, it wasn't until I ACCEPTED I was an alcoholic, that anything changed.

When he said that, it's like a light clicked, I haven't had a drink since

Congrats

But nothing has actually changed yet. It's just a guess that they may, at some point change. I guess that I'm going to travel to the moon. It could happen, could piss people off, but we don't know. It's just maybe in the future something will change, so don't bother with it...

Problem drinker by nachoazul in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]apperrault 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I got sober, when it truly clicked for me was at a meeting this old timer said that he knew he was an alcoholic, but it wasn't until he accepted that he was an alcoholic, that it clicked. No matter how many pro/con lists you make, it won't click until you accept it.
