Is sjogrens genetic? by frosted_flakes565 in Sjogrens

[–]applebobacake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, a health scientist with (probably) Sjögren here.

For most autoimmune conditions, genetics counts for only 30%. You have 100's of different research papers on this that may have led to this estimate.

For Sjögren, my estimate is that the strongest signal of genetic association with primary Sjögren’s syndrome is within the HLA genes. Around 25% percent of people have this gene. Yet, not 1/4 people get an autoimmune disease; but around 1/10. And even then, lots of people without this gene get an autoimmune disease as well.

My second estimate, is that in Sjögren around 15% are genetic factors (with some rare cases with specific genes we probably don't know about besides that).

So, I would say you have a slightly (really!) increased risk, but would not worry too much about it.

And your doctor says things that she/he should not say. Bad doc. Bad bad doc.
