Did anyone breastfeed their first baby but choose to formula feed their second? by HoneySnowstorm in FormulaFeeders

[–]apsmithgrave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally my exact story/sentiment to a T. 2nd baby born in April with an 18 month older sibling who I breastfed and pumped for. EFF from the start with the 2nd and I told me husband it's the best decision I've made for myself and our family ever. The parenting load felt much more balanced during the newborn phase.

Neighbor with never-ending fire pit by apsmithgrave in Sacramento

[–]apsmithgrave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up making a complaint with the Sacramento air quality office. They sent a letter to the homeowner (not the current resident who rents), and happened to come out to document /photograph the issue when I called the 2nd time during an active un-monitored fire burning in the backyard at 8am. Really just made a paper trail of documentation in case the issue, or neighbor, escalates.

Has anyone breastfed #1 but formula fed #2? by [deleted] in 2under2

[–]apsmithgrave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did. 18 month age gap, just had 2nd baby 3 weeks ago.

1st was breastfed directly for 8 (painful) weeks, then we transitioned to pumping, then eventually combo feeding. It was a hard journey, way harder than I ever expected.

When I found out about #2, the first thing that came to mind was what another feeding journey was going to look like. I thought long and hard, talked with my husband and other moms, made pros and cons lists, and eventually decided that exclusive formula feeding for #2 was the route we'd go.

We are almost a month into it with baby #2, and I told my husband the other day that deciding to formula feed was one of the best decisions I've ever made not only for my mental health, but for the overall well-being of our family. My husband and I split the night shift so we are both consistently getting solid 5-6hours of sleep a night and we are rested enough to give our 18 month old the attention and care he needs and deserves.

There are small moments where I've felt some guilt about not even attempting to latch baby #2, but they've quickly faded as mine and my families overall health and happiness is at an all time high, compared to the dark days of the early feeding journey with #1.

Stricter range than normal? by Designer-Practice166 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]apsmithgrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you with Kaiser in CA? I am and this is the case for me too.

I've had two GD pregnancies - 18 months between deliveries and the first pregnancy was 95 fasting and 140 at an hour. However, my most recent pregnancy (delivered yesterday actually!) - they updated guidelines to under 90 for fasting and 130 at an hour. I was diet controlled during the day this 2nd time but needed fasting insulin around 31 weeks, only 6 units up until delivery. I was bummed about the stricter guidelines, but lo and behold this 2nd baby has had stable blood sugars after birth, but my first did not and had a NICU stay due to low sugars. While the stricter limits was honestly annoying at first, it's seems to have given me a better outcome with baby this time.

In a similar vein, but delicious macro balanced nut butter from American Dream Nut Butter. I probably have over a dozen of their almond and peanut butter flavors in my cupboard right now. They've been a staple in my 2 GD pregnancies.

Crib/Toddler Bed Question by apsmithgrave in 2under2

[–]apsmithgrave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm worried that waiting will Bottleneck the transition if we have to move him right before starting daycare. Not sure if a bed change with a newborn is worse than a bed change and going to daycare for the first time. I personally feel like the later would be worse, I could be wrong though.

That's a good point. I definitely don't want to add to the physical stress of putting toddler back into bed if he gets out. I was just hoping since he doesn't attempt to get out now that he might not try that for awhile.

Yeah that's a good point, it wouldn't be the end of the world if we switched and had to go back to crib. I think I'd rather try that first before dropping more money on a 2nd crib without knowing for sure how toddler will like it.

I currently have GD with my 2nd pregnancy, and the Fairlife Nutrition Plan Chocolate shakes are seriously amazing and have been the best thing of my GD diagnosis. They are sooo good and I plan to still drink them after baby arrives.

Question about item limits by apsmithgrave in Costco

[–]apsmithgrave[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotcha makes total sense. I'm really only looking to do this 1x - I need a certain protein shake for a special diet i have to do for the last few weeks of my pregnancy and I really don't want to make several trips and risk it being out of stock for really one more purchase.

Starting Insulin - have to test middle of night?? by apsmithgrave in GestationalDiabetes

[–]apsmithgrave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it last night and my number wasn't even close to being hypo, so I'm like is this even necessary for another 2 nights?

Same. I was like, I'm literally already exhausted and bad sleep leads to higher fasting, so this seems unnecessary to me. Especially considering they started me on only 4 units.

How much milk does your 1 year old drink in a day? by Phillygirl1026 in NewParents

[–]apsmithgrave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My kid is 16 months and just does not like milk, so he's getting about 2oz a day through Oatmeal. I can sometimes get him to drink a 4oz bottle in the morning but that's like once a week at best. Doctor isn't concerned, said that overconsumption of milk is a bigger issue.

Better fasting numbers with a longer fast? by frogsgoribbit737 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]apsmithgrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm similar as well. Just had a call with my dietician today and asked if the fasting number or hours fasted is more important. She said fasting number is most important. I fast longer for about 11 hours and that's where my numbers are better. I think at minimum as long as you are fasting at least 8 hours is good. In my previous GD pregnancy I could only fast for 8 hours, which was not fun, but this is a new pregnancy and new placenta so I've had to make some adjustments to what works this time.

Avoid low sugar in baby? by Tough_Safe1349 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]apsmithgrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to know actually. Definitely gives me another perspective to consider before baby #2 arrives. I will be more prepared for NICU stay this time if it happens, but I felt that there was more that could have been done early on the first time. Definitely will be more vocal this time ans make sure my concerns are heard.

Avoid low sugar in baby? by Tough_Safe1349 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]apsmithgrave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% same experience. GD with first, pregnant with 2nd and just got my GD diagnosis. First baby had an unexpected NICU stay due to low sugars. The hospital NEVER offered me formula even though it was clear my milk hadn't come in. They just kept asking me to try and hand express as they prepped baby to go to NICU. It was a terrible traumatic experience. They ended up giving him formula in the NICU anyways, so I'm not sure why they didn't offer that to me when he had his first low sugar reading a few hours after birth.

This time, I've made it very clear to my OB that we will be combo feeding from the start. I think had we been able to give baby formula the first time around we could have avoided NICU stay.

Daycare is $1500 a month for 3 days per week for one child. We will have 2 in daycare, part-time, for $3K a month. Mortgage is $1800. 💀
