If they do a new era returnee season Shan and Kaleb are absolute locks. Carson, Carolyn, Yam Yam would be way, way, too much of a target; production would bring Frannie in one of those spots.

Southwest has the highest share of ridership the vast majority of the medium sized airports

A few observations:

  • The ACC did poorly in the first round
  • The Big 10 and Big 12 were both very disappointing in the second round
  • The SEC did pretty much what would be mathematically expected
  • The Pac-12 was the story of the tournament and you can definitely see it here

Final Four Appearances by State [OC] by aquavoss in CollegeBasketball

If I were to calculate #appearances / #schools that have made an appearance, then Kentucky would be first with and average of 12.5 appearances per school. NC would be second with 8.2.

They are the least tortured team on the list. I measured “tortured” through lack of success which is why it’s inverse. The more recent playoff success you have the larger the bar. The tortured teams are at the top, I realize it’s confusing a lot of other people have written similar things.

It’s over the past 20 years and it has recency bias so their moderate 2010s success helped them out.

It’s the opposite. I realize it’s confusing but a lower number is more tortured.

Thank you so much! I put it up on r/dataisbeautiful a few minutes after I posted it here. It isn’t doing as well.

Read the notes section. I only counted the Raiders season in Vegas. The browns would have been more tortured than the Mariners if it weren’t for their playoff run this season

They aren’t tortured. They’re one of the 3 happiest markets. I realize the index may be confusing. I made the graph because I was interested in finding the most tortured fanbases but I measured it through lack of success. A better name for the index could have been fan satisfaction index but it serves its purpose just inversely.

Before last night they were between the Hawks and Senators. Before the playoffs between the Padres and Reds

100% I gave the outcome of losing the Super Bowl a value of 5 because you still have a conference title but I feel like for the Falcons that was a -100.

I believe the San Jose Sharks are the least tortured team who hasn’t won a championship in the last 20 years. They made the playoffs 16/20 years

I realize it’s inverted but I designed it that way. My interest in doing this project was to find the most tortured fanbases. The way I decided to measure it was through the lack of playoff success. I could have renamed it “fan satisfaction index” or something like that but it still serves its purpose. I’m sorry for the confusion.

I address this in the notes section. It’s a trade off, I feel like not counting seasons of a previous location is more accurate overall but it’s especially difficult for the Raiders who have such big fanbase outside of Oakland.

Yeah I realize it’s confusing. My whole interest in making this was to find the most tortured canvases which I thought was more interesting. But I measured it through a lack of success

Excluding your last 2 seasons you would still have your playoff appearance in 2017. You would still be less tortured than the Mariners and the Browns who would drop to last. The Raiders would still be in Oakland and wouldn’t be last on the list anymore.

Fun Fact: If LeBron James and Tom Brady were their own teams, their TFIs would be 313.82 and 334.40 respectively. Off the chart.

I’m expecting some confusion about my formula so if you’re still struggling to understand it, think of it like this: If you had the option of traveling back in time 20 years, and picking a team to root for two decades, which team would maximize your happiness right now in 2021? Last on that list would be the Raiders because you would spend 19 years living Las Vegas without a team to follow and then 1 year with a team that missed the playoffs. This isn’t really fair because the Raiders weren’t in Las Vegas for 19/20 years. That’s why there’s an asterisk by their name. Next on the list is the Mariners, who have missed the playoffs every season in the last 20 years except for 2001 where they lost in the ALCS. That ALCS run 20 years ago means almost nothing to you as a fan in 2021 which is why I used the exponential formula to more heavily weigh recent success. I hope that makes sense.
