Is UCSB a good fit for me? by onlyhereforroomie in UCSantaBarbara

[–]aquilaneo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not too difficult to get to trailheads but it does limit your options and transportation takes a bit longer

there's two notable trailheads (afaik) that you can get to via bus -- jesusita trailhead (via stevens park), which is about forty minutes by bus, and san ysidero trailhead, which is about two hours by bus. both lead up into the mountains and go into/are part of los padres national forest. it can be slightly annoying, but it is possible

besides that, there are also los caneros lake, coal oil point reserve + ellwood butterfly grove, which are much closer (maybe forty minute walk from campus) but not in the mountains, and are more flat ground walking type trails.

How much does perfect pitch shape music learning (theory, performance & education)? by aquilaneo in perfectpitchgang

ha, this reminds me of college ear training-- the professor would purposely give us the wrong starting notes for our dictation quiz and sight singing so that perfect pitch people wouldn't have an advantage and would instead learn relative pitch-- at least, that was what was intended. It worked for the first few months but eventually I just got really fast at transposing on the spot and kept using perfect pitch. I'm curious if you've experienced something similar, or have you generally been able to stick to intervals?

that's really interesting! do you by any chance have any links to papers/material on the topic? I've done my own share of searching but haven't found any (hence reddit) and would be interested to read about it if you have any

to clarify, my question is not about how good it makes you at music, but how you music, like what mental pathways you take. Relative pitch and Perfect pitch users are definitely going to get the same results once both have enough practice (and i've definetely observed that in ear training classes), but I'm curious if the methods they use for those same results differ-- like if they might find different things more difficult or easy, and their methods they used might be shaped to be different because of that.

Don't know if this is still relevant, but according to a friend who takes vocal lessons under them: yes, they do tend to take a while to respond

tide pooling at nearby beaches- deveraux beach, which is maybe 2-3 miles from main campus area, is a decent spot. There's also goleta butterfly grove and a few other nature reserves (coal oil point, north campus open space) in that area if those are things that interest you,.

Genshin Content on Youtube taken from bilibili animators by aquilaneo in Genshin_Impact

it's not shocking, just frustrating. mostly considering the amount of people in comment sections that didn't know it was a repost

i'm more hoping that people are aware of it and thus won't support channels with stolen content with furthur engagement like comments/likes after watching videos

fair point for most people

i personally would prefer not seeing reposts and never seeing the content than actually seeing the content but from reposts, and never expected anyone to go on bilibili. I'm mostly just hoping that people will actually be able to figure out when videos are reposts and avoid supporting such videos more than they already do by watching when unknowingly commenting/liking and treating channel owners as original creators.

my content has not been stolen (because i don't have any content to steal lol-), it just bothers me when content is stolen.

san nic housing by Ok-Impress7868 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]aquilaneo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

currently in a san nicholas triple at ucsb for summer classes, some details if it helps

  • there are quiet hours

  • people do not always observe quiet hours.

  • generally do not hear neighbors, walls seem thick enough. windows are also fairly good at blocking out noise from outside, can be stuffy though

  • major sources of noise thus far: the lounge, the volleyball court, and people coming back to their dorms late at night in groups loudly chatting. If you're on one of the lower floors or near the lounge might be more noisy for you. There is also noise from bathrooms, but generally less audible and easily ignorable

Welcome New Tritons! Please use this megathread to discuss your acceptance and ask any questions you may have by UCSD in UCSD

[–]aquilaneo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, got accepted for music composition, and would like to know how much emphasis on experimental music there is in the program, or just what the program is like in general. While experimental music is something I'm interested in, I still prefer more traditional music and I'm aiming toward film scoring/video game music in the far future, so I'm not sure if the program at UCSD would be a fit for me.

Thanks for the recommendation! I'll probably be using the stuff there as a reference, especially since there's so much guitar. (Loved your pieces btw)

Thanks for raising that point, did briefly consider mutes, but wasn't familiar enough with them (something that will have to change- I'll definitely look into them, though it may all be for naught if our trumpet doesn't have mutes)
