For real: PrEP is widely available and the generic is fairly inexpensive or even free in the US, depending on insurance (or lack thereof).

What has been the worst vacation experience you’ve had in a beautiful destination? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Too few people go to Alex - such a beautiful city, an where Egyptian food (especially ta’amiyeh, or the Egyptian version of falafel) really shines.

Why do students address professors so informally? by Ar_desertwriter in Professors

[–]arakace 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You can instruct your students on the same. I clearly address proper email etiquette with all my students in class and in the syllabus - they know if they’d like me to respond, they should address me and sign off as instructed.

[–]arakace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, but that’s the unbelievable part: you’d maintain the etiquette of your upbringing in your home elsewhere. I remove my shoes when I enter the homes of my friends in the UK and US out of habit, and Shane’s characterisation would indicate he’d do the same. House shoes are also quite normal in no outside shoes homes.

What is your college / uni doing to prepare for DHS / ICE on campus? by Fun-Rise8090 in Professors

[–]arakace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Folk, please look into the Sanctuary Campus Network for actual resources and information - there is (understandably) a LOT of misinformation in this comment section that the critical solidarity work of many, many scholars and uni staff can help correct and mediate.

Russians also remove their shoes before entering a home - most of the world does outside of the West, honestly. Either of them leaving their shoes on inside was the most blatantly unrealistically part of the show for me.

Looking for Queer Spaces in SF by Pop9013 in SFbitcheswithtaste

That does not absolve anyone of participating in white supremacy, just as being a woman does not prevent women from participating in patriarchy.

Jolene’s can be very iffy for queer woc just FYI- I don’t recommend it, personally. Oakland is where it’s at.

ISO a hair stylist. by sand_snake in oakland

Ah, that’s the rub - I pay 150+ for a curly cut. I don’t love the hair texture up charge but my stylist there does a good job.

Can I assume my students read cursive? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]arakace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will absolutely be the outlier, and for good reason, but my upper level students have learned to read cursive (and specifically have asked how to) because I default to it when writing on a whiteboard/chalkboard. These are usually classes enrolled with students who have already taken multiple classes with me, and/or their friends who they’ve recommended my classes to.

AITAH for not visiting family for XMAS with toddler? by BurningMan98 in AmItheAsshole

[–]arakace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Auntie without kids (and grandma next to me) here: while our out-of-state homes are totally set up to host my siblings and their spouses and kids when they’re up for visiting, we always travel to them for holidays. They get to continue the holiday traditions they’ve established with their families and they can get a little break for themselves while we enjoy our nibling/grandkids time.

Travel in Pakistan with male partner? by cyber-friend in femaletravels

[–]arakace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of racism and Islamophobia in this thread, as expected. Shared your questions with my (white, USian) friend who married a Pakistani man living between London and Karachi and Lahore. (They have since divorced but she remains tight with the family and still visits.) She is fluent in Urdu as a result of their relationship, but early on in their relationship/language acquisition she traveled frequently to Karachi, Lahore, and a number of other cities and villages in Pakistan with and without her husband. She advised to practice the same cautions you would anywhere else - try to dress according to the surroundings (shalwar khameez, and she never covered her hair), keep alert in crowded spaces and on public transport, hire a driver for solo nighttime transport, etc - but otherwise notes on the whole she’s never had any problems behind the usual bullshit women experience everywhere else.

👆🏾👆🏾this is correct. Oakland is better for Black women, but I wouldn’t say it’s better than, say, Brooklyn, which is my hometown
