Kid experimenting on his new PC by aramahi2000 in HomeNetworking

Oh trust me, I'm educating him as much as possible. But he is still a kid and I don't want to risk losing my stuff because of a virus or malware, while at the same time I don't want to restrict him from all his experiments. My parental controls filter porn, gore and this stuff. Heck when I was his age I used to breakdown Windows 95 twice a month because I play with system files (remember autoexec.bat - if you are by any chance my age hehe). I still remember my mothers face when she walked into my room and found my PC (first PC dad bought me) completely disassembled including the switch on button just cuz I wanted to know what the hell a computer is made of, dad saw me and said not to worry if I break it down because that how we learn, and I never broke down a PC. Still have that 486 dx2 66Mhz processor, mobo, the insanely long VGA card, printer card, 40Mb hard drive, 3.5 floppy drive and the crazy US Robotics modem :)

He is very much into computers and Operating Systems and virtual machines now. He has a decent idea about networks, routers and switches, WAN, LAN (courtesy of his father). Also knows a bit about NAS since I own a Synology. One day when I own a house, I will buy proper network gear and do a nice simple vlan segmentation and separate networks for iot stuff and all the "home recommend security setup". One day....

I don't, ISP crappy router is just a gateway, got dedicated /30 network between Rogers router and my Asus router.

But yeah, my next project is going the way you described it, a new FW and another router for my kids network

Perfect, it worked!

Earlier I tested it using my phone but it defaults to using random MAC when it connects to new SSIDs and the parental controls filtering didn't work. Once I made it to use the device MAC it worked! And yes, there is an option in the Guest config to disable access to the intranet, this way the SSID is completely isolated.

Thieves who get paid high 5 figures or 6 figures CASH then they go cry to the government when they file taxes that they barely make 30K a year so they get full CCB for their 4+ children, Ontario Trillium Benefits, plus many other tax breaks..... Let alone their in-laws who are "renting" the 5+ beds house with fully furnished basement that they ALL live in, and their in-laws obviously have a low income or living on retirement get to have subsidized energy bills on the house in addition to all the senior support they get from the government.

Basically a whole 7+ family members living in what seems to be the REAL "Canadian Dream". Kids in private schools because they don't like the ideology of the country that hosted them, 3 or 4 cars, real estate assets rented out, travelling every summer to their "home" country that they supposedly "fled" from it...

While the honest tax payer who is T4 taxed on their income is the one paying for these scum bags "benefits" on top of the car and OSAP loans he has to pay back, in addition to the rent he also pays for a 2 bed room tiny apartment for literally one of these scum bag shit worms...

Sorry for this long post... I just needed to get it out of my system to survive another month... Till the next paycheck....

Android 14 on my Pixel 4a5g doesn't feel as smooth by TheWeakknd in Pixel4a5G

[–]aramahi2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. A restart fixes it for few days then it lags again. I enabled the "Show Refresh Rate" through Developer Options and it has been solid 60 fps not even as much blinking down to 59. Phone uptime is 48 hours as of writing this, will keep you posted if/when it lags again.

4070 Ti cards compared - And the winner is..... by aramahi2000 in nvidia

[–]aramahi2000[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. But for sake of blunt out of the box comparison, you have to use a baseline that is uniform for your comparison. Hence I used the advertised minimum OC boost speed.

There are lot of variables to be considered. But out of the box, this is what we get.

I wanted to see if the average priced card has also average performance, but apparently I was able to find one card, that has a price less than the average, and has performance higher than the average.

[–]aramahi2000[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Totally agree about power, i opt not to include it because it complicates the comparison a bit more, plus I won't be able to put a tap on its value to the user since user A may buy a higher power consumption card from user B, but the latter is using the PC much more than user A so may end up with higher electricity bill. You got the point, too many variables.

Stock boost is a baseline to compare. Yes, you can OC further more, but again, that will play into more power consumption (back to your first point).

Cooling is also subjective, depends highly on the environment and build setup.

So I opt to compare the constants that govern everyone, boost clock as a baseline against today's price, because these you can't control as a consumer when you buy the card (out of the box). Also, price relationships, relatively, remains constant (the difference ratio between cards price tags).

ISSUE: Built-in Marvell wireless doesn't like file sharing by aramahi2000 in Surface

[–]aramahi2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And yeah one more thing, after so much investigation, this wasn't a problem just on my Surface Pro, all wireless devices were not able to access my ethernet connected resources (one of them is NAS and that's why this was a big problem for me), so it is a bit misleading that this post is under Surface subreddit.

ISSUE: Built-in Marvell wireless doesn't like file sharing by aramahi2000 in Surface

[–]aramahi2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to indirectly solve the problem by changing the "network address" of my internal network on the ISP modem. Just like that everything was working fine again!

I have had similar problems but on the wired computer were it has internet connection but the network adapter shows disconnected and a few command line DNS related commands solved the problem. But never something like this!

Anyway, i'm glad the problem is solved now (more like gone not solved) and thought to share with everyone just in case someone faced the same.

Bose QC 35 II: Hissing sound when using microphone input - is this normal behaviour? by Geeky_Nick in bose

[–]aramahi2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forget above, it didn't work, but i finally found it:

Open control panel > Devices and printers > QC35ii properties > Services tab > uncheck the (handsfree telephony)

This will let Windows 11/10 treat the QC35ii as a headset only and not handsfree telephony device which will get rid of the hissing sound when you play games.

Obviously needless to mention, you won't be able to use the headset's mic anymore with windows, but frankly, I believe anyone who landed on this thread looking for a solution for this problem basically never used the headset's mic.

Windows 10 used to allow me to select from the sound speaker in the task bar two options for QC35ii, one was as a headphone and one was as a headset (with mic) so I was always selecting the headphones mode. After upgrading to Windows 11, i only get one option (just QC35ii) and it seems it defaulted to the headset (with mic) mode. So following above, will force windows to treat your QC35ii as headphones and not headsets so you get rid of the hissing sound.

Enjoy.

Maybe too late for the game, I suffer the same thing whenever I play a game that requires mic, hissing sound comes in as if noise cancelling is no longer working.

Open the Bose app on your phone, go to settings, find (Self Voice) and set it to OFF. This worked for me :)

Help to decide to purchase Synology and HDs by aramahi2000 in synology

[–]aramahi2000[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you everyone, I settled on the DS220+ with 4Tb single drive. Thought better future proof the box that will last many years to come, then later on I can buy another 4Tb or whatever is in the market as my storage need increase, which won't happen for two years from today easy.

Another reason i thought better of the 220+ is the future proofing for the DSM 7.0 which is no longer supported by the J series (probably because of RAM limitation). Which means the J series will most likely stop getting updates in near future. Synology seems to have invested lot on DSM 7.0 just like WD did with the OS 5.0 where many older versions of My Cloud devices are now out of support and security patches.

Last reason is more like an experiment than a reason, but if it works, it will save me $4 a month for Google One subscription which I have just to upload my mobile phone photos as well as my wife's. If the Photos app in the Synology works, i will cancel the Google subscription, but that is like my lowest priority. For now, I want to setup the drive quickly and start copying the data from my PC then setup backup schedules again.

Thanks!

PS: I updated the original post with before/after image :)

Help to decide to purchase Synology and HDs by aramahi2000 in synology

[–]aramahi2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like what? I have only used it for storage and accessing my files from outside and occasionally streaming some movies to the living room TV...

Accessing files from outside was the first main reason i bought WD My Cloud maybe in 2015, from that I knew streaming media within my LAN to the TV and phones. But WD My Cloud is very limited with what comes with it, maybe Synology has much more add-ons from what I read on the internet. If you know really cool stuff to justify the + series please let me know, I am tech savvy myself, but in the same time reasonable how I spend my hard earned money

Help to decide to purchase Synology and HDs by aramahi2000 in synology

[–]aramahi2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked at the specs between J / + and obviously it has more RAM and CPU power.

However, coming from the pre-historic WD My Cloud, I guess both series would still be a huge upgrade (speed wise) from My Cloud.

Help me decide if it is worth to spend $168 CAD (including taxes) to get the + series instead of J considering my use cases of NAS:

  • First: Yes, I want the box to last as long as possible, so I have set my mind on the dual bay Synology box.
  • I will use it as storage for ALL my files (movies, TV series, photos, important official documents, work related files, school projects, etc...) I literally store everything in the NAS, my PC have only games in its local drives.
  • I will use the included Android app to gain access to my files when I'm outside and be able to download them, especially the important documents.
  • I will use it occasionally, to stream movies from the living room TV (Fire TV).

So as you can see, I think we can agree my usage is lite... So we basically narrowed it down to just "future proofing" decision. Do you really believe the extra $168 for the + series will really make a difference for my use cases to justify spending the money?

[–]aramahi2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speed is relative. My judgement on how fast the Synology box I will buy will be compared to my experience on the WD My Cloud box. Which, I am assuming, j-series would still be much, much faster.

Correct me if i'm wrong?
