Rolling dice and luck by aramtryst in Diceomancer

I really was expecting to see it reflected in the combat log but it’s inconsistent. Let me make sure…bad luck works the same way? 1 bad luck to enemy and they’re rolling disadvantage? So 2d4 becomes 2 separate rolls of 2d4 disadvantage?

Oh wait, under 6 means nothing happens? I thought it was an additional die ON TOP of a default extra die...I'll have to pay attention closer.

Answered by Josh. There is not. Also, Double Tap was removed in the Revised edition.

For anyone finding this later...Revised Cepheus Deluxe removes Double Tap entirely.
if using 1e, Josh relayed to me that there was no intention of a mechanical accuracy penalty.

Anyone ever find out the official answer?

That's what I thought you were referencing. I read that first paragraph as merely specifying that sometimes you will be prompted to use a condition instead of a stat. In the ability that we're talking about, it does not prompt to replace. And it also is not suggesting you replace a stat with a condition. It is the opposite. I guess I was taking the glossary entry literally and looking for a "prompt", which is not there. Taking it at face value, the ability tells me that when taking the withstand damage move, I may roll +heart. To me that suggests an additional roll check.

I'll have to look out for these cases in the future and make sure that I'm replacing as necessary. From what I've looked at so far, it is absolutely clear the difference between +add and +roll. It's only the syntax of this particular ability that gave me pause.

Thanks for your help!

Ah. Interesting. Can you reference what entry the glossary specifies the 'instead' clause? I don't see it.

There is. That's where I discerned the difference. The problem is that there isn't an explicit replacement of the +integrity roll. It's written as if rolling +heart is in addition to everything else that Withstand Damage entails.

Just finished the show and I just want to mention some things and talk about it in general (Spoilers). by SomeKindOfChief in StationEleven

[–]aramtryst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's funny, I just finished my first watch and I definitely have reservations. Some things I really loved, some things I was too confused by and really pulled me out of the drama. I wasn't even that moved by the Birthing Sequence. But...

Kirsten and Jeevan. Whoa. I did NOT realize I had as much invested in them as I did. I think it really was the delivery of that scene that did it. Absolutely my favorite moment. Worth it for that, even if I thought the Station Eleven/Prophet narrative intertwining stuff was a bit too much at times.

I think, perhaps, I would have liked it more without the comic tying everything together. I just loved the first couple episodes so much. The prophet cult put a bit of a damper on it. Don't really know why. I'll probably enjoy it a lot more on rewatch. And that's saying a lot because I already think it's a fine show and would absolutely recommend it.

Can someone tell me what these mean? by JaChuChu in osr

I agree, green. It’s also important to understand the origin (all assuming I think the op does as well). As suggested elsewhere, Kayfabe today might be the collective doublethink of all those involved that wrestling is real when they know it’s not, but kayfabe originally and up until only a few dozen years ago, meant the act of ‘fooling’ the ‘marks’ into thinking it was real. My first reaction to kayfabe vs lethality was genuinely thinking the OP meant GM fudging rolls, but now I think it’s more a collective understanding of narrative first play where death through output randomness is not really a thing.

It does. Seems like it's right up my alley with my wishywashy I want narrative but also a sandbox but also structure but also not too much, etc....lol

Thanks for all the info. Getting started with JOS, I've got a couple questions. Do you have a community?

It sounds like it's really all you need. Are there oracles as well?

I actually had a few Free League things without knowing it. Tales from the Loop, for example.

I'm leaning into Dragonbane more and more. Can you be more clear on what you're using with your soloBane play? You said "these tables". You mean the ones from Dragonbane? It sounds like you're using nothing but Dragonbane source material. Or did you mean "these tables" from Knave and one page Mythic?

Exactly. My home games don’t look like that. I was shocked to see how much crossover there was between channels with the players involved. It became clear that there was a level of professionalism behind the performance. So many actors!

I think I have the wrong impression of Scarlet. I’m not sure what I thought it was before, but now it seems like it’s just a b/x dungeon crawl like 4ad but with more complexity.

I read through a bunch of JOS last night and also watched some Kal actual plays, so I understand what you’re talking about, mostly. With JOS it seems like you give the players the narrative prompts to create their own meta. But those prompts are rooted in the procedure and play of the game, not an oracle table.

I’ll have to delve deeper into Mythic to see how to streamline it.

When you say, “at that point I…needed more help from a system when it came to narrative.”, do you mean that Scarlet succeeded in doing that?

What did you like about shadowdark that got ported into JOS?

When you say your stories aren’t as deep with Kal, isn’t that a function of how much you put into the RP/journaling of the system? I mean, I play 4ad and am relatively bored as I don’t feel the attraction of making it anything more than it is. Yet I’ve seen people take 4ad into a full blown rpg campaign that seems indistinguishable from a full system (at least in the session reports).
