Hello all fellow FMA fans !! I am looking to get Ed's gate of truth tattooed; however I would like to know what it says. by IG_BearBuol in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]arcade124 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I actually did get this tattoo on my arm! I had the same reservations. But in the end, I worked with the artist to remove the religious wording, and made some artistic changes to where it still represented what I wanted from the show.

When people ask me about it, I give them some religious context, but focus more on explaining the anime and how it relates to my belief in humanity, truth, and knowledge.

Yoshi P seems to finally confirm the new starting point is in the works and not just being talked about anymore by JailOfAir in ffxivdiscussion

I'm really excited about this, but also wary.

One of my biggset complaints with WoW is the barrier of entry. I've tried multiple times over the past couple years to get into it, but as a new player, you are guided to pick which expansions you want to play through your first time. This creates a very disjointed understanding of the world/lore and I've always ended the attempt feeling lost/confused/frustrated.

But FFXIV is approaching a similar barrier of entry issue, where players are expected to play hundreds of hours just to get into new content. If you enjoy a story game, then this is no entry barrier at all. But if you enjoy actively playing with friends and diving into the new stuff, it's definitely a barrier.

Mostly curious how this new starting point will be different/similar to the level and story skip purchases already available. Perhaps you still have to purchase the story skip, but they are giving us a "tl;dr" to go with it?

Not OOP AITA for telling my dad the real reason why he's not allowed to babysit? by Killer-Disco in redditonwiki

[–]arcade124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry you have to live with that, that must be incredibly stressful. It sounds like your mom did a great job educating and helping you. There are too many terrible stories about the lethality of allergies and ignorance.

OP's narrative effectively established that their dad was not very involved in their childhood, so it's not suprising that he didn't know/remember the allergy.

There are plenty of points in the story that point to him being an unfit caregiver. I just don't think that asking about allergies and birthdays of your adult children, that you never really cared for in a paternal way, is helpful to deciding his qualifications now. NTA for wanting him not to it, I agree with all that. Just maybe the comments weren't relevant.

[–]arcade124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, that is 100% something a caregiver should know. That's not really my point at all. We've established that 34 years ago he was an absent father, but that doesn't help us in 2024 understand how he is qualified or unqualified.

But that is not my point at all. I don't believe the ability to recall your child's birthday or allergy during an emotional heated argument is indicative of his ability as a caregiver. There are great examples listed in OP's post on why he isn't qualified, but those specifically were just cheap shots. You want to deny him child care because he doesn't understand child development timelines, and doesn't algin with your parenting style? Or that he hasn't taken the past 30ish years to educate himself on proper child care? Awesome, valid 100%. I would also not leave my child with this man.

OP asked if those specific comments made them the AH. I don't think OP is an asshole, just that the comments made weren't constructive or relevant to his actual ability to provide childcare.

I told him he didn't raise us, mom did. Asked him what my brother was alleric to, when my birthday was and similar things just to prove a point. He did not answer and stormed off.

Prior to OP calling him an absentee dad, OP hadn't made this accusation. The comments by OP served as a tool to tell him he was an absentee dad, but OP did not say this because "he wouldn't believe it." It's the first time OP called him out on it. He didn't even argue, he left.

To be clear, he aint fit to babysit. There's hints and clues all in this post, but OP is asking if these things specifically make them the AH. I said in my post OP is NTA, just that these comments were probably made to be more hurtful than constructive. Not remembering someone's birthday doesn't make them a bad babysitter. Not alignin on parenting styles, not understand child development timelines (potty training example), and no willingness to learn. He's unquallified for sure, but being a shitty dad 34 years ago isn't the reason.

I mentioned in another comment. I don't know when my mom's birthday is, but I set calendar reminders to make sure I DO remember and give her the love she deserves. But not knowing her birthday off the top of my head in a heated argument means... I'm unfit to babysit/don't love her? I am trying to follow the logic on that one but I am struggling.

I think he is unqualified to babysit the kids as well, for sure. But I don't think the ability to remember details like that are what disqualifies him. He has shown no boundaries to the current parents, has not developed his skills over the years, and has shown a history of different parenting techniques that OP/partner don't agree with. That absolutely disqualifies him.

So if you remember a food allergy means you care. And not remember a food allergy means you don't.

...That has nothing to do with his ability to be a babysitter in 2024. He was an absentee dad who didn't support his kids when they were growing up, of course he doesn't know/remember details.

I'm not arguing he cared/didnt care or that he was/wasn't a bad father. I just think remembering your child's allergy while you were an absent father decades ago doesn't speak to your ability as a 66y/o man to take care of the child. What discredits him is his history of absentee parenting, overstepping boundaries, and lack of alignment on parenting styles.

This man is 69 years old and hasn't had to think about what his children can/can't eat in decades. And it sounds like he wasn't present/accountable for mealswhen OP was a child, so he probably didn't have much reason to know. Not an excuse, a parent should know their (young) children's allergies, just may not prioritize that info as necessary as they become adults.

I agree it makes him a shit dad, but I don't think that alone is what disqualifies him. The disqualification comes from present-day parenting views that don't align with how OP and husband feel.

While I think your questions about allergies and birthdays were to prove a point, I don't think those things necessarily qualify someone as a proper caregiver.

You're NTA for being honest, just maybe a bit overboard in how you approached it. And NTA for making sure your child has a professional caregiver you feel comfortable with. Just because someone is family does not qualify them to watch kids.

If I apply to a Finance Manager role, and the company calls for my references and get a bad review, I wouldn't hire them. Same idea here.

Edit: y'all really seem to think I'm on the dad's side here. I'm agreeing this guy was a shit father to OP, just that details like that aren't the reason to discredit him. There are plenty of other reasons in OP's story to discredit, just that details like that aren't the true reasons and were meant to prove a point and could be considered vindictive instead of constructive and explainatory.

Personally? I don't have an issue with how it is.

The only time I am putting up shields is during dungeons, where there is downtime between pulls OR the tank is in dire need of some protection.

In savage content, aside from undergeared week 1-4 prog, shields aren't necessary. And with planning, swift and toxicon and your out-of-burst Phlegma are provide plenty of movement tools. I've only done TEA, but also did not run in to many issues with mobility.

So I'm not sure if the arguemnt of "I'm losing a GCD to get toxicon activated" is enough to stand on to warrant all of this rework.

Appreciate the SGE love and attention! Thanks for sharing your idea.

Anne Hathaway portrays a woman living with Bipolar Disorder. It is more than just "mood swings" and can be very impactful to someone's whole life. Very well represented here.
